It was too rushed. Both the relationship and the book.
There was an occasional scene where I went back a bit to see what sparked it.
The 'suspense' wasn't very suspenseful. It could only go one of two ways.

I love Emma. She's fantastic. She and Avery are my favourite leading ladies so far.
Dom is just as 'stay away for her own good without asking her' as the other men in this series.
Some inconsistencies threw me out of the reading experience. Carter is M

I needed more reasoning behind Jack's thought process in high school. He'd been with Ann long enough to know her favourite ice cream flavour, but believed a snarky girl and a couple of guys that she cheated on him? And he put it all down t

I was invested in this story. It took me longer to put it all together than it normally would.
I think this would have been better if it'd been shorter. After a while, it began to wane.

I understand this has been renamed and changed, significantly to the first version. And it shows. It's choppy, a little messy and actions don't match emotions.

I liked that this came with trigger warnings. I think more books should.
This packed an emotional punch.
Avery is, chaotic, feisty, hard, and protective of herself and those she loves.
Carter is her polar opposite and they work together so well.

Doris Lessing
“Ideally, what should be said to every child, repeatedly, throughout his or her school life is something like this: 'You are in the process of being indoctrinated. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. We are sorry, but it is the best we can do. What you are being taught here is an amalgam of current prejudice and the choices of this particular culture. The slightest look at history will show how impermanent these must be. You are being taught by people who have been able to accommodate themselves to a regime of thought laid down by their predecessors. It is a self-perpetuating system. Those of you who are more robust and individual than others will be encouraged to leave and find ways of educating yourself — educating your own judgements. Those that stay must remember, always, and all the time, that they are being moulded and patterned to fit into the narrow and particular needs of this particular society.”
Doris Lessing, The Golden Notebook

“We awaken by asking the right questions. We awaken when we see knowledge being spread that goes against our own personal experiences. We awaken when we see popular opinion being wrong but accepted as being right, and what is right being pushed as being wrong. We awaken by seeking answers in corners that are not popular. And we awaken by turning on the light inside when everything outside feels dark.”
Suzy Kassem, Rise Up and Salute the Sun: The Writings of Suzy Kassem

“Knowledge is power, power corrupts. Study hard, be evil.”
Anonymus

Emma Chase
“She talks like you. It’s not every day you hear a four-year-old say Prince Charming is a douchebag who’s only holding Cinderella back.”

"That’s my girl.”
Emma Chase, Tangled

“Equality is not a concept. It's not something we should be striving for. It's a necessity. Equality is like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as men and women, and the misogyny that is in every culture is not a true part of the human condition. It is life out of balance, and that imbalance is sucking something out of the soul of every man and woman who's confronted with it. We need equality. Kinda now.”
Joss Whedon
