Diary of a Madman by Nikolai Gogol
"Humorous, But Sad!

I don’t remember this story being so sad, but maybe it’s just that my brain is different.

How dare the titular councilor in this story think he is someone important and special.

He will pay for that.

Five fantastic stars. ✨✨✨✨✨" Read more of this review »

Yeah, I do have a couple of Aussies on my list. I hear they can really write one hell of a horror story. Thanks for calling out Bread and Circuses. I'll see about grabbing that one soon. I've read Will Elliot's The Pilo Family Circus (and loved it), but I have a feeling he might be somewhat atypical, Aussie or otherwise.

I'm located in the US, in southwestern Ohio.

Figgy Thanks for the friendvite, and recommendations!

I've been meaning to pick up Only Forward for a while, but kept forgetting to do so, and I'd plain forgotten I had added The Tooth Fairy.

Both are now in my "need it now" list, which is my go to when I am deciding which books to order this week.

I see you have a couple of Aussies on your list! I can vouch for Bread and Circuses, it's... chilling, and moving, and well written.

I'm big on Barker, too. I've read all of his stuff (except for some of his plays). I think I got hooked with his Books of Blood. The Scar is a good place to start with Mieville's Bas-Lag books. Even though it's the 2nd book set in that universe, it stands alone.

Indeed. You have a lot of good stuff on your to-read list, too. A few that I'd recommend bumping up are Palimpsest, Perdido Street Station, and The Wasp Factory. They are all of the genre/literary hybrid class you seem to enjoy.

Yes, it looks like Deadman's Road is the one to get. It looks like it contains all the Reverend stories I know of. I've read all the stories in that collection and they're all good.

Ctgt Thanks for the friend request, Gregor. I read your review of The Shadows, Kith and Kin, saw the bit about Rev. Jebediah and was going to ask you about the best place to start. It looks like Deadman's Road is a collection of those stories, so now I'm on the hunt for the Subterranean Press volume with the Tim Truman cover.
