Jerusalem's Lot - epistolary prequel to 'Salem' s Lot which looks a little into the founding of the town and the evil lurking underneath. I found this lacked a lot of the atmosphere of Salem's Lot and the letter writing style left me feeling very detached from the story. 3 stars.

Graveyard Shift - The rats. There's something wrong with the rats. This did a pretty good job at setting up the atmospheric scene and making me, who isn't afraid of rats, quite freaked out by the end. I had to suspend my disbelief a little, but overall this was suitably scary. 3.5 stars.

Night Surf - The surf might be the same, but the world certainly isn't. If I hadn't read reviews prior to reading and realised this was a Stand short story I probably would have only given this 2 stars but given the background, I didn't mind the dislikable characters (bet whoever survives ended up in Vegas). Still felt a bit pointless though. 2.5 stars.

I Am the Doorway - The eyes. I'm not a sci-fi fan normally, but I liked the horror undertones of this and the decent into dispair of a former astronaut who can't stop the bodily invasion of aliens who view humans as monstrous, hideous creatures. The juxtaposition between the aliens feelings and Arthur's makes for an intense story although I don't think it grabbed me as much as it would have if this hadn't had science fiction elements. 3 stars.

The Mangler - A sentient, malevolent laundry press that gets a thirst for killing. Easily my favourite so far. Like King I seem to have a bit of a 'thing' for sentient objects and I loved the foreboding in this right from the offset, the idea that the machine was taunting them. Also love the idea that there's other evil objects out there. Almost as though someone purposely left them to find... 4 stars

The Boogeyman - A man recounts the death of his children to an unsuspecting therapist. Aside from the ridiculous ending I thought this was a strong short story. The main character is deeply unlikeable - racist, homophobic and mysogynistic but it's his family that I cared about. This had definite allegories for domestic abuse, familial relationships and the like. Still not that scary to me though. 3.5 stars

Grey Matter - Timmy's dad ain't been the same since he started on the beer. Getting back into creepy territory. There's just something extra creepy to me when mould is involved. Think Last of Us meets waste of space dad for this one. The build up in particular is great. 4 stars

Battleground - Toy Story on steroids. With guns. Probably the story with the lightest amount of horror so far, this was actually quite a fun ride. I would have liked more background as to where and how this tin of toys came to be, but if I just take this for what it was it's a brief bit of light relief. Maybe. 3.5 stars
