“If you love one book by a certain author it does not automatically mean you will enjoy all the author’s work” (Me, while reading The Secret History) .

Before I begin my review I have to inform you that Goldfinch is one of my favorite novels. If you want, you can see my short review here. Based on that fact, there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind of how much I love Donna Tartt’s writing. I thought it was perfect in the first novel I read by her, it kept me coming back for more each day, even though the plot was not overly exciting all the time. Although many reviewers are of the opinion that Goldfinch was too long I thought that it could have had 1000 pages and I would have still savored all of them.

The Secret History is a different story entirely. I will admit from the beginning that I did not find the subject too enticing when I read the blurb but, nevertheless, I was looking forward to dive into the novel because it was written by the wonderful Donna Tartt. The beautiful writing is still there, that is one of the few reasons that I made it this far. However, I have a few (read many) problems with the content and I will do my best to explain them below.

Firstly, we have the insufferable, snobbish, self-absorbed characters. I am not the kind a reader that needs to like the characters but I want them to be interesting and vivid. The six students felt the same to me, even the main character did not possess any special trait. Maybe Bunny was the only one that gave me strong feelings; it almost brought me to the point where I thought it would be a good idea to be killed. The point is, I enjoy well done villains with interior conflicts but there were none to be found here.

Secondly, there is the discrepancy between what I understood the book to be about and what it really was. The blurb states that .“Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries". Let’s begin with the first line, .“under the influence of their charismatic classic professor”. In all the 400 pages that I read I did not see the classic professor as a charismatic character. Actually, the professor was almost non-existent. We are sometimes told about him but when he actually appears in the picture he only has a few flat lines. Oh, and he smiles a lot. I was expecting the teacher and the intellectual conversation between him and the students to have an important presence in the novel, to challenge my thinking, but I was out of luck. I believe we are presented only one discussion from the class, which was essential for the plot, although I did not feel its importance when I read it. We are told about how great and eccentric this professor is but we never actually see it. I was expecting him to be some sort of a disguised devil if he manages to influence his students to commit murder but I do not see how their acts had anything to do with the professor. If anything, he was worried about them when they disappeared for a while and lost contact with them.
Going forward, to .“a group of clever, eccentric misfits”. Same problem here, we are told and not showed how smart they were. A .“living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries”. basically means expensive restaurants, a mansion in the countryside and vacation in a palace in Rome. I guess it is a typical existence for people with money, not necessarily something out of ordinary that should deserve our awe.

Their first act of “evil” felt underclimatic since, again, we are told about it, we do not actually experience it. It would have been a totally different experience to be there when it happened not to be told by it from a character after a month or so after the deed was done.

Finally, I thought there was too much flat, useless dialogue. I wish I had an example to show but I always forget to take notes, sorry.

I feel so disappointed for not liking this one but I am not losing my faith in Donna Tartt. I am sure her next book will amaze me once again.

Bianca Great review. The subject doesn't appeal to me at all. I'll have to re-start Goldfinch, I can't remember why I gave up on it, but I don't remember hating it...

Hugh I think it is partly a question of unrealistic expectations. I read this before The Goldfinch and if anything The Goldfinch was more disappointing for me, particularly the last third or so. I agree with what you say about the shallowness of the characters...

Agnieszka My sentiments exactly, Adina. I liked it at the beginning, there was something strangely appealing in this sinister atmosphere but little by little I felt so furious with that snobish tribe and their so-called charismatic professor that had to force myself to finish it. It was my first and probably last encounter with Tartt. I'm not tempted by her writing at all.

Angela M is taking a little summer break Adina, I'm so glad I'm not alone . The Goldfinch is one of my favorite books and I still think about Theo. Donna Tartt is an amazing talent. I also wasn't able to get into this book or Little Friend. Maybe it's the subject matter that turned me off . Thanks for your honest review.

Adina (way behind) Bianca wrote: "Great review. The subject doesn't appeal to me at all. I'll have to re-start Goldfinch, I can't remember why I gave up on it, but I don't remember hating it..." Give it a quick re-try and see if the writing is for you. otherwise it will be challenge to finish Goldfinch.

Adina (way behind) Jess wrote: "Ah Adina, I see that you ended up feeling the exact same way as I did about this. What a pity. But, as you say, will definitely look out for more of Donna Tartt's books, because Goldfinch was amazing!" Unfotunately, I did. I was sure it will be amazing. Let's hope we will both love the next Dona Tartt.

Ilse Seconding Agnieszka here Adina, in my humble opinion you have read the best part of the novel, the beginning - what followed to me was more like a sinking and collapsing soufflé :). Excellent write-up!

Violet wells Utterly agree with Ilse - and what a great way of putting it!

Hanneke Seconding Agnieszka and Ilse! Ilse, I like your souffle metaphor!

Lisa Yup - that smiling non-entity of a professor had his 15 seconds of fame when he made it to the blurb - and there he stayed.

Adina (way behind) Hugh wrote: "I think it is partly a question of unrealistic expectations. It is strange although we are not the only one who enjoyed the first Tartt only to be disappointed by the other. Maybe we set the bar too high after going in the first one without expectations.

message 17: by Niki (new) - rated it 5 stars

Niki I love the book, but I can see why you didn't like it and you put it in a well thought out manner- great review!

Campbell I thought the final third the best section of the book by far, but it still wasn't enough to redeem the rest. And I'm with you on 'The Goldfinch', it was excellent. This, by comparison, was excruciatingly dull.

Adina (way behind) Agnieszka wrote: "My sentiments exactly, Adina. I liked it at the beginning, there was something strangely appealing in this sinister atmosphere but little by little I felt so furious with that snobish tribe and the..." Same here, the beginning felt promising but then...

I do not want to spoil my opinion of Tartt any more than I already had.

Adina (way behind) Ilse wrote: "Seconding Agnieszka here Adina, in my humble opinion you have read the best part of the novel, the beginning - what followed to me was more like a sinking and collapsing soufflé :). Adina (way behind) Violet, Hanneke, Ilse said it perfectly with her shuffle metaphor.

I did mention the endless empty conversations, though. They contributed to the overall dulness. Goldfinch was a masterpiece.

Eva I have read this book a long time ago and loved it. But i can certainly understand why you didnt care for it very much. Strangely i have it the other way around: loved the secret history, hated the goldfinch. Mostly because of the main character. I should reread both sometime l..

Jaline I'm sorry to hear this one didn't work out for you Adina.

Paula Hagar Even though I loved The Secret History (as I have LOVED all 3 of Tartt's novels) very much, I also love and respect your review of it. I can totally understand why this would not be to everyone's liking. A lot of my friends did not care for The Goldfinch, which I also loved, and agree with your review of that one. TSH was a very long and complicated book, as all of hers are.

Adina (way behind) Eva wrote: "I have read this book a long time ago and loved it. But i can certainly understand why you didnt care for it very much. Maybe we have too many expectations.

Adina (way behind) Jaline wrote: "I'm sorry to hear this one didn't work out for you Adina." Me too :(

I can also understand the bad reviews for that one although I loved it.

Joe I'm still waiting to read something about Donna Tartt's work that makes me want to drop everything and read one of her novels, like I would Dune or Lonesome Dove where there are stakes involved.

message 33: by Edward (new) - added it

Edward I read this when I was 16 or 17 and found it absolutely gripping! Who knows if I would feel the same reading it today. Great review, Adina. Sorry you didn't enjoy it.

Stacey I didn't really enjoy Goldfinch- it never grabbed me. Perhaps we will be opposites and I'd love this one. Hahahaha

Adina (way behind) Joe wrote: "I'm still waiting to read something about Donna Tartt's work that makes me want to drop everything and read one of her novels, like I would Dune or Lonesome Dove where there are stakes involved." i am not sure i can find the right incentives for you. \

Adina (way behind) Stacey (wanderlustforwords67) wrote: "I didn't really enjoy Goldfinch- it never grabbed me. Perhaps we will be opposites and I'd love this one. Hahahaha" You should try it...if you have too much time on your hands.

Stacey Ha! Not at the moment, perhaps I will soon. 😉

Victor *Nothing Happened* I've had this on my TBR since Sept 2015 and kept it there through several rounds of culling because of the high rating, the number of ratings and number of reviews.

When people are using words like dull, pretentious, repetitive to describe a story or slogging through to describe their reading experience, I know it's time to cut bait. Like Stacey, I don't have too much time on my hands at the moment so this has to go.

What is it with blurbs? Recently I've noticed more than a few reviewers complaining about blurbs that give away too much information and blurbs that are misleading. I cannot decide which is worse.

I will give The Goldfinch a shot since there seems to be a consensus that Donna Tartt's writing is beautiful. Thank you, Adina. Sorry you didn't enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed your review :)

I had it on my TBR since January 2014 which is more than 3 yrs and a half. That was one of the reasons i decided to go for it. That and because I loved Goldfinch and I had it my library. I would definitely read Goldfinch first. It is still verbose but the pace is better and the writing...

I know what you mean with the blurbs. They are so misleading. One of the last examples was for Reservoir 13 who talk about a disappearing girl but there is no mystery in that novel. it is about the daily life of a village and the impact the disappearance has on the people. In my current read the blurb, Under the Skin, the blurb reveals too much of the plot and removes from the mystery.

message 41: by Kay (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kay Thank you for the review. I had some of the same problems with "Secret History" which is why I have been reluctant to read "The Goldfinch". I do want to invest the same time and attention that I did to Secret History only to feel "Yeah it's OK". But now I think I will read "The Goldfinch".

I hope you will enjoy it. i discussed with quite a few friends who either loved Goldfinch and disliked The Secret History or vice versa. i do not know why this happens. So, there might be a chance with the Goldfinch.

Travis Agree on all points.

Adina (way behind) Travis wrote: "Agree on all points." Then i have to say that i;m sorry you don't like it.

message 45: by Wen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Wen Adina, I can see your points. I feel The goldfinch had more mainstream appeal.. Those students were in the augmented reality built around them by the professor and themselves. They had too much time and financial resources at their disposal. So somehow I could justify their shallowness. And yes, totally agreed on Tartt's writing...

Deanna Glad someone felt the same way about Julian. I was expecting him to have a huge role - I mean, it's the first thing in the synopsis! Then toward the end (I know you didn't make it that far -unfortunately I did), there's all this about how they love him so much. He existed for about 2 seconds??? Who even is he?? Richard also keeps thinking near the end about how Julian is actually pretty superficial and had them all fooled. Really? Because I got that impression every time he was there, both from Julian's actions AND from Richard's OWN NARRATION. Ugh. The whole book was frustrating but all the crap with Julian annoyed me more than anything else.

Deanna Nikki, you can still review the parts you did read, and why you hated it, without finishing the book. DNF reviews are important to me when looking through reviews, they're far more useful than the good reviews.

Also thank you for standing up for me with Nikki. I got tired to explain while I rate and review some of the books i did not finish. I mean 50% you get to really feel a book or not. I even considered to stop saying that I DNFed but I find that unfair.

Maria Delaney I couldn't agree with your review more!

Adina (way behind) Maria wrote: "I couldn't agree with your review more!" Thank you although I wish it weren't the case. I like Donna Tartt and it pained me to give her a bad rating.
