All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whittaker is a 2024 Crown publication.

DNF – 32%. When I read Whittaker’s “We Begin at the End”, I struggled with the idea of young people dropping filthy language in front of adults with a shocking regularity. I mimicked my peers, giving the book a very positive review, focusing on the storytelling, as everyone else seemed to, but now I do remember being very conflicted about it.

Going back and re-reading my glowing review of that novel, I did mention my issues and the language, but I still gave it four stars. I wish now I’d been firmer as this novel also features very young people, in a time that is my era, one I remember well, and I certainly never heard of such behavior- dropping hardcore language, for its time, in front of adults in a rude, disrespectful way, no matter what their circumstances,( I shudder to think what would have happened if I'd said F-you to an adult- or anyone else for that matter, if overheard by an adult), and adults matching it by also using strong language in front young, impressionable, vulnerable teens... and treating them almost as peers at times.

But, this time, I’m not going to condone it, go along with it, etc., to keep from being the preachy outlier. It’s a shame I’m the only one who struggles with this aspect of the author’s writing style- which is not all THAT impressive. In fact, I don’t have a single regret about pulling the cord on this one….

Carol Around this very time ( 1975), I threw my brother out of my house for that kind of language. Not in my house, not with my babies around. Oh, I let him back in eventually but all knew, the hard language is not used by any in our home.
This book is, maybe was, on my list. Thank you for your honest review. I think it is difficult to not to join the crowd, or even good friends, with a difference in opinion on GR. I applaud you for taking this by the horns and expressing your view point. I've struggled with this at times. Bravo to you, Julie.

Thanks very much, dear Carol, for your kind words. I was the same age as the main character in 1975, so this just didn't ring true to me. It was unnecessary to the story and I'd have been much more attached to the character's vulnerability if the author had not given him such a foul mouth. It is hard to go against the grain sometimes, but I'm glad it did! 💖

MarilynW Julie, I've never had children and I can't explain how disturbing it is when I read/hear books with teens acting in the way you mention. I just can't stand it, it's obviously a big trigger for me and I'm so glad I had already decided this book wasn't for me. Thanks for speaking up and making it clear that I want to avoid the characters in this story.

Thanks so much, Marilyn!! It's very disturbing to me, as well.,. I'm glad I'm not the only one bothered by this. There are too many great books out there to support that will not insult our personal moral code. 💖

Peggy You got farther than I did. I've decided there are so many great books out there that if it doesn't grab me from the beginning I am not diving into it. And I don't need to like any best seller that gets 5* reviews.

Antoinette I must admit I did like his first book, but this one- I finished it, but it so dragged. It’s good to stand by your principles, Julie!

Thanks very much, Antoinette! It was a long book- I'm pretty sure I'd have struggled with it no matter what. 💖

Rachel Hanes Julie, you are not alone!! In fact, I mentioned why I didn’t care for “We Begin at the End” in my review years ago, was because of the disrespectful teenage/young girl. It just never sat right with me. If that’s the case with this book, I know for sure that I don’t want to read this!! You made a wise choice DNF’ing this book. I honestly think people were just going along with it for the hype 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks so much, Rachel. It didn't sit right with me either- and I think you hit the nail on the head about going along with the hype. 💖

Canadian Jen Sorry this one wasn't for you, Julie. A fair review.

Persephone's Pomegranate Well-written critique.
