★4 stars
✎𓂃 “Once I start kissing you, I won’t want to stop there. You’re a game-changer, Brielle.”
This was SO unexpectedly good!! I shouldn’t be shocked bc Heather never leads me astray, but the vibes were vibing so hard.
☆What to Expect:
👻 Paranormal romance set in New Orleans
👻 All the ghostly spooks
👻 Three sister witches with unique psychic abilities
👻 Semi-explicit spice to start that fades-to-black
👻 Insta love (but it makes sense I promise!!)
👻 Serial killer with detailed thoughts and torture methods (he has a POV)
☆My Thoughts:
This was everything I wanted in a haunted NOLA narrative!! I visited NOLA almost exactly a year ago, and lemme tell you how this city exists in a completely different world in the US. The architecture, the culture, the history–it’s something that has always fascinated me and this book brought it all to the forefront.
After reading 1.5 NOLA-based books and feeling disappointed (one authored by my ghost tour guide which surprisingly didn’t vibe, and don’t even get me started on the Anne Rice novel that led to my first ever DNF), I had been on the lookout for one that would deliver on all my experiences.
Right away, Shadows drops readers in on a ghost tour led by our FMC Brielle, detailing haunts at the LaLaurie Mansion and the Andrew Jackson Hotel, which were so accurate to my own ghost tour, it brought me back immediately (along with all my ghostly nightmares lol 🤣🫣).
But of course, this is also a romance, and who joins in on her ghost tour? The tall, dark, and handsome Cash 🔥 (Cassien Winslow–ya’ll know I melted at his full name #batboy), an FBI agent on mandatory leave, and somehow they feel like they’ve known each other all their lives. They instantly click, and our protective MMC latches on to help Brielle solve the mystery of why more and more apparitions of tortured girls, who look a little too much like her, keep appearing to her.
Bc our FMC is a talented psychic/witch who can see dead people, or shadows normally. But these girls are full-on apparitions, begging Brielle to save them.
☆Would I Recommend?
ABSOLUTELY. This book reads so fast, it’s honestly a one-sitting kind of book. The dialogue felt a little unrealistic at times, but I thoroughly enjoyed every second regardless. The serial killer’s POV can be extremely disturbing, so just a heads up to anyone who may be sensitive. These are not standalones, and the conflict isn’t fully resolved in book one. I need to know asap about this past-lives situation as it wasn’t explained in Shadows. It looks like the next books in the series will focus on Brielle’s two sisters Millie and Daphne, and I cannot WAIT to dive in for more spooks. GIVE ME ALL THE SPOOKS!! 😱

I love that! I love NOLA! And I don't really know how to explain it but I was recently missing the show The Original (which is paranormal in NOLA) and while this series isn't quite like that, it really satisfied my craving. The vibes are vibing. It's not perfect but it's definitely been keeping me entertained during my nightly reading. I can't wait to hear what you think! 💜😘
