“Human beings did so much damage to one another just by being alive. To the people they loved most, and to the ones they knew so little about that they could convince themselves they weren’t even people.”
THE CLIFFS is a beautifully written story of family, secrets, and home, set on the cliffs of Maine. I love books with a strong sense of place, and the abandoned Victorian house that Jane stumbles upon is really one of the central characters of this novel. It’s a story of this house—its inhabitants, its hauntings, its history—but it’s also a story about motherhood and marriage and how we are connected to each other and to the land around us. I read this one months and months ago and really enjoyed it, and I was delighted to see it’s also this month’s @reesesbookclub pick!
