did not like it

Yes, the blurb does say teacher-student affair…. However the blurb and the beginning of the book make it sound like rumors. As an educator, I was so excited to read this book. The beginning starts off so exciting with someone burying a body… and then it turns into a disgusting portrayal of child grooming. I only made it 50% of the way through the book and then I had to stop. From other reviews, I can see it only gets worse.

Chelsea (thatbookishteach) It was SO hard to read as a high school teacher. Super disappointed she did this

Brooke Eileen So glad someone agrees with me. All I see are rave reviews and I don’t understand it at all

message 3: by Jess (new) - rated it 1 star

Jess Meuzelaar Yeah it does only get worse. Absolutely disgusted.

message 4: by Kimberly (new) - added it

Kimberly Hess Morrow Yep didn't likenit at all. The book wasn't worth the time to read it

message 5: by Ree (new) - rated it 1 star

Ree I don’t understand all the four and five star reviews. I didn’t like any of the characters. If I heard shoes, one more time, my brain would bleed. Child grooming. Teacher student relationship. Disgusting.

Lily Squire i’m at 50% rn and i am feeling ILL

Nicole McClinton Fellow HS teacher I agree 100%. I feel like I have to take a shower. So terrible.

Janae Rangel This book just felt really icky. The thought of a toilet paper roll just grosses me the fuck out now. I will never understand the thousands of 5 star reviews that endorse this shit.

Emily It was disgusting!!!

Valeria I’m not even a teacher but had the same feeling. I got through it and immediately regretted wasting my time. Awful, awful, awful. Why are we glamorizing these relationships and integrating them into the books/media we consume?

message 11: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah Simone So gross, the twist at the end too. Gave me the icks.

Hannah Spurlock Agreed! This is not a “thriller.” This is a sick and disgusting book. I get suspense but to publish and profit off this storyline is very concerning

Nicole Im a teacher too and stopped at the same point as you. Had to look for reviews to see if any other teachers read this and had the same reaction as me. I thought it would be just rumors too and am shocked that she actually wrote all this.

Cassie Volpentesta For real! I’m half way thru and I’m like what am i even reading anymore???

message 15: by Erin (new) - added it

Erin I had to stop, too. I was so excited to read this and it was just way too gross for me.

Ashalenia Graham Can I just ask, with it being a fiction book with various murder plots in it, are you not also disgusted by that? I’ve seen so many people say this but I just don’t understand bc 1) it’s fiction but also 2) in all of her books (and thrillers in general) there are usually murders of some degree…. Both are crimes so why is this one the one that crosses the line for you, but not literal murder? And the burial of someone alive?

I think because the thought and mindset that has to go into fictionalizing child grooming, pedophilia and sexual abuse is gross. Thought being- why would anyone WANT to have those thoughts in a way to "entertain" readers?

Jenna-Rae Roy As an educator this book made me sick at every page.... at one point I though about throwing it out but carried on hopeful that a plot twist made it all ok... but it didn't and now I find myself wondering if I can continue to support.

The Bookmonger So is it better to pretend child grooming doesn’t exist and for no writer to write about it ever because it disgusts you? It’s not like the book was written where it was glorifying the relationship. Its portrayal was horrifying because it’s in fact horrifying when it actually happens, and horrifying readers is the goal of thriller/murder/horror books. These kinds of reviews are so pointless it’s mind boggling. Don’t read books about murder if you don’t want to be “horrified” by the characters behavior. The fact that you were delighted about the body getting buried and then “disgusted” by the grooming says a lot more about you than you seem to think it does.

message 20: by Jan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jan Absolutely agree with you. We like to bury our heads in the sand and pretend these things unfortunately don't happen in real life. Where is the outrage for the real life groomers that some of you have for the book? Yes the themes are difficult to read but it's fiction. And sometimes, we have to go into the difficult and uncomfortable and taboo.

Brooke Eileen I’m well aware that it is fiction & uncomfortable. I read A LOT OF DARK and twisted books. This one just wasn’t for me as an educator.

message 22: by Jan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jan Well Freida did say her intention was to get the reader angry and disgusted at the inappropriate themes so I suppose she achieved her purpose.

Tiffany Teacher too. I did finish it, but I had to skim through the Addie parts because I felt physically nauseated. You’ll be happy you didn’t finish it, because the twist at the end makes all even worse.

Anthony I don’t understand the “disgusted” comments. You can’t just pretend this stuff dosnt happen in real life because YOU don’t like it. No crap no one likes it, except sickos so it’s great FMc brought attention to it whilst at the same times it was a very entertaining read with multiple twists.

Rituparna Choudhury Eve is as much a sexual predator as Nate is, AND she gets away with murder, while Nate tries and fails. Dare I say they were actually a match made in heaven?

Vanessa Williams Yah I'm half way through and I'm disgusted. Gross.

Jayne Shelley As a teacher I found it disgusting the way they talked about/blamed a student who needed help and ignored the horrendous bullying. And the final twist was so distasteful.

Tiffani Abrahamson Spot on review! I’m in the exact same boat. Halfway through. Can’t pick it up again

Sophie Thelk I mean… thrillers/suspense are supposed to make you feel uncomfortable and unsettled I feel like. I was definitely uncomfortable about the student-teacher relationship as well of course, so I won’t disagree there.

Sloan As a high school teacher, I couldn’t agree more.

Amy Yes if we are ever talking about banning “fun” literature this should be it. Theses people teach?
