did not like it

i did not have a good time reading this. 💀

for starters, this book is pitched as magical realism but it's really more like watered down diet sci-fi. the "curse" was extremely convoluted, and utilized a trope that i, personally, don't enjoy; and dear God did this book drag. it dragged like that alien will smith hauled through the desert in Independence Day. it felt so bogged down in mundane details given to us via a very passive narrator who felt about as substantial as a flat stanley doll.

june never felt much like a real participant in the story; to me it always felt like she was just... there. while Young has decent enough prose and does a good job of describing emotions, they still manage to fall flat because the character of june farrow is so "meh" that i didn't really connect the emotions to her. this book was written in first person, so that definitely doomed the rating for this out the gate. another issue i had regarding plot was that ultimately, all the mysteries of the story could have been resolved in about five minutes with a bit of communication from other characters. you cannot build a plot out of "everyone else knows everything that's going on but they just refuse to tell the protagonist because we need the word count." that does not make for an intriguing mystery, it's just dumb and annoying. there is also zero explanation for the origins of the farrow curse, and the resolution to it really felt more like half a resolution, which i found greatly unsatisfying.

the romance was another strike against the story, since june and eamon have no chemistry to speak of. their entire love story is built upon a life thst June remembers but did not technically live (like i said, the story is convoluted) and it just didn't make the romance come alive for me. even her relationship to annie was severely lacking, since the girl only spoke to her about three times. these relationships in june's life all felt like someone put up plywood walls for a house but forgot the sturdy foundation underneath. the weird mention of a semi-love triangle was also wildly unnecessary and i feel entitled to financial compensation for even having to deal with it at all.

the one point i will award in the book's favor is that the settings were well done; i did find the town of jasper to feel immersive and tangible. unfortunately, nice aesthetic does not a solid read make. i was annoyed and bored throughout the story, and am pretty sure that a week from now i won't remember hardly any details of it. I would happily walk through the red door myself if it meant i could get back the time i spent on this book.

thank you to NetGalley and Delacorte Press for giving me a free arc in exchange for an honest review.

Alyson Morales Agreed!! I’m surprised at how many 5 star reviews there are 😅 definitely felt very flat and there could have been more things expanded upon from the first half of the book into the ending and that never happened.

all the five star reviews made me feel a little crazy because the story just felt so flat and "blah" for me. 😂

Virginia “Ginny” Agree with your review .

Jocelyn I also would like to know what the ending meant? Like did she not break the curse? Are we just doing this over and over again until the end of time?

I WONDERED THE SAME THING. her "breaking the curse" kinda just seemed like creating a new one and I didn't know if that was supposed to be...a win?

Megan This review is brilliant and made me laugh out loud multiple times! I would happily walk through a red door to get my time back 😂

thank you 😂

Meghan Thank you so much for your review. I also gave this book 1 star and after reading all of the 5 star reviews I felt like a crazy person. I was so mad at this book and all I wanted to do was go back to the time before I opened the cover lol!

Marion Sewell 100% agree. The author just kept saying the same things over and over. We can’t believe your grandmother didn’t tell you….tell her what?!

Christine Seib I DNFd because I hated the writing, but I would have spared myself the first 3 chapters of prose if I'd read this review first. I detest stories that rely on withheld information, and I will gladly stick by my decision to abandon this one for good.

Kristin Denver I can’t wait to read excerpts of your review to the book club I belong to; you and I are painfully aligned, and you made me laugh out loud. Twice.

😂 I'm glad we can get some chuckles out of the experience, since we didn't enjoy reading the book.

Jay God I'm so happy I found other people who didn't really enjoy this book , I thought I was going mad. The timeline thing felt too convulted and just left with way more questions than before

Diana I experienced this book with the same impatience and annoyance. The perseverating and the whining- I’m just glad that to be closing that back cover once and for all. I loved your review summation.

Nicky It was also obvious. I figured out the Birdie connection halfway through. I kept thinking that SOMETHING had to happen to make this highly reared book blow my mind, but it never did.

Aj Yogi I'm about 20% into the book and thinking of DNFing and will after reading your spot on review. I gave it a shot since I really like her book Spells for Forgetting, but alas, not a winner this time. On to better books!

Nicole Cooper I need a spell for forgetting that I read this book. Or no, nevermind. I don't want to ever read it again. Your review is spot on.

Nicole Buck This!

D T agree!!!

Jeanine I am wat way into it and would love to find a red door myself. I saw a bunch of 5 star reviews and guessed I much be mad because it's such a cluster for me. Now I will race to finish.

Virginia Peyronel I've been thinking about DNFing this book for a long while, but I wasn't sure because of how many rave reviews it has. Thank you for this review, you've convinced me to finally DNF it

Stephanie Your review here is not only very funny, but true. And I cannot argue with a single point you made. To answer Jocelyn, it read to me like June gladly and willingly took on the new ‘curse’ of them all reliving doing all that over and over again, just so her daughter Annie would be free of the original ‘curse’, even though that means that they *ALL* have to relive these lives over and over again….. which literally makes no sense. So if someone got something different from this situation, I would love to know, because I reread to the last 6 chapters just so I could get some stuff straight, and I still came away confused….!

Sherlotta I also agree, there were so many chapters where barely anything happened and it was just June describing how she felt in that moment, it's just that she always felt the same and had to go over it all over again in case we forgot!!!

Lauren Read Rover Word

Kalina Such a well written review that puts into words exactly how I felt reading it!! June was so annoying!

Gabriella Definitely watered down cereal if you ask me. Well written and I totally agree!

Elephantom I actually liked the story and agree with the review. I can't wrap my head around the time travel twists either and find that truly annoying. The narrator (of the audiobook) sounded clinically depressed and I hated myself for not checking beforehand. I also hate a story that relies on people withholding information. On the other hand I did enjoy the story in spie of the slow bits and how the characters slotted together in the end.

reeree OMG😭 I had the same thoughts after finishing the book. And what happens to Mason? June just assumes that he will forget her and move on. Like BRO you guys have known each other forever unlike Eamon whom you met 5 days ago. Wouldn't Mason be really heartbroken and upset because June disappeared and since he doesn't know the truth wouldn't he regret not saving her from her "illness" or being with her through it for his life?
