Update : This is the winner. No comment.

Now shortlisted for Booker Prize 2023

I am intrigued that we are starting to write dystopian novels about the past, but I don't think the substance is there when the past is fictional.

message 1: by Alannah (new)

Alannah Hopkin It's not about the past, it's set in the near future.

My point was that everything in this book has already happened somewhere, sometime.

Liquidlasagna Ed Wood:
The world is a strange place to live in.
All those cars.
All going someplace.
All carrying humans, which are carrying out their lives.

Mario What an odd and inappropriate thing to day about the novel.

The Raven King - Feyzan It has happened and it is happening still. The fact you didnt care about it or found anything to relate to, scream privilege. And that doesn't make the book bad. It's a you issue.

Ingo Hated the book too, but, to be fair, Margaret Atwood did the same with The Handmaid's Tale

Karen Agree. Where was the substance, and the writing style was deeply disturbing for me, Flo. Thank you for your honest perspective review. 🙂

Matthew Goodwin This is a highly ignorant and stupid thing to write.

Lucy Holz About the past? It’s about the present and future… maybe try reading a news article before your next book

Flo Matthew wrote: "This is a highly ignorant and stupid thing to write." dont be so bitter because someone has a different opinion on a book than you.

Maybe try to read a little bit of history. History tends to repeat itself, but that's not a reason to be ignorant about our past. My point is that dystopian novels usually show us something that hasn't happened yet. So, when you talk about things that happened or are happening, you should be brave enough to not hide your message behind fiction, because then it has no real value.
