really liked it

Mcfadden is finally back after some let-downs. This was a fast-paced thriller for sure. I liked the characters, which is great after being so dissatisfied with the characters in never lie and ward d. Even if the main character had her flaws, I felt they were explained better and there was some character development (at least a bit). I must admit I saw the twist coming, but was still curious about how it all would play out, so it was a breeze reading. In the afterword McFadden writes that she’s worked on this book for over 20 (!) years and that shows as I couldn’t find no obvious plot holes, and it was told convincingly. Maybe there was a bit too much spoon-feeding when it came to Dawn who obviously was on the spectrum, but from what I read it wasn’t too stereotypical, and I wasn’t annoyed by the way McFadden described her personality. There was actually a lovely moment in the end and I found myself tearing up. How often does that happen in your standard psychological thriller?

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc

Fiza Pathan Lovely review Nina! Astounding to hear that the author worked on this book 20 years! Glad you enjoyed the book & rewarded it 4 stars. I've read a few thrillers that have made me teary eyed, those were the ones penned in the 1970s & 1980s. They had the power & charm to do this. Those authors were true wordsmiths of that time indeed! Hope you enjoy your next title as well! Happy Reading to you! :)

Nina (ninjasbooks) Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment. It’s rare to feel so emotional, and although I felt some emotions, I didn’t cry rivers. What books did this for you?

The A.J. Cronin books, the Morris West books, Ellis Peters' books, Thomas Harris' books, the Arthur Hailey books & good old Stephen King (his crime thrillers). We had all of them in my school library. They were very emotive. Cheers! :)

Nina (ninjasbooks) I also feel in love with king’s books, was so moved by some of them and they just strengthened my love for reading :)

Nina (ninjasbooks) Thank you carol!

Rosh Twenty years is a long time to work on a book. Kudos to the author's patience! 😄
Glad you enjoyed this one, Nina. Great review! 💙

Kateland Lenox Thank you for reviewing this book! I was a little scared to even give this book a try after Ward D. But I’ll definitely check it out.

message 25: by Werp (new) - rated it 2 stars

Werp I'm at 50% and I'm not liking it at all. I loved the inmate and many others from Freida, but the characters in this one are all so bad. I'm so bored...Oh well, you can't please 100% of people and that's okay.

Nina (ninjasbooks) I didn’t like the inmate and many others 😂 just shows we like different things and that’s brilliant :)

Heather Lovick ❤ I'm not in a huge rush to read this one. Ward D was absolutely horrible and I didn't care for her second house maid book one bit... maybe when I do get to this one, like you I may like it.

Nina (ninjasbooks) I get why you feel that way. I was not a fan of ward D either. Let me know what you think if you read it!

message 29: by Joan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joan Reading is a funny thing. We don't all bring the same perspective to books and we are not all looking to get the same things out of our reading material. I know lots of people love Colleen Hoover and John Marrs. I've read enough of both authors to know they simply are not my cup of tea. However, Freida...I think I could read her shopping list and view it as a 5 star thriller. When I had read all of her thrillers and was waiting for her new book to arrive, I got the other older non-thriller "womens" books she wrote just to see if I would enjoy them. I'm currently laughing my head off over The Devil Wears Scrubs. I think the underlying sense of humor is the main reason I enjoy Freida's books so much.

Marialyce I above comment just won't delete. I wrote it bf coffee! :)

Nina (ninjasbooks) Not anyone can be blamed for anything without coffee 😂😂

Danielle Victoria I loved ward d personally bc it really scared me, I was freaked tf out. And the twist, my word the twist. But I can see your point about character development. When it comes to this one. I liked it. I thought it was good. But it didn't hit me the same. Also. Our main ding dong really really annoyed tf out of me with every police interaction. Like, could she BE any more stupid? (Where my chandler fans at?) But aside from that, it was good. I just kept facepalming every time I read about her and the detective.

Nina (ninjasbooks) Yes, I don’t like characters who should be intelligent but Act nothing like it
