it was amazing

An eye-opening book for me! Mr Egan offers us a tragic history of a young woman, Madge Oberholtzer, who was brutally attacked and died in the aftermath of wounds inflicted during a kidnap and rape by a man who claimed to be the law and create the law in the state of Indiana through the influence he had achieved within the KKK in the early twenties. I never suspected KKK became such a power in this state and what I learnt was both gut-wretching and mind-blowing. D.C. Stephenson, the man who deserves the name of a con artist an a charlatan as well, rose to be a dark charismatic figure in Indiana leading those who hated anyone and anything not of a white Anglo-Saxon descent or heritage. Miss Madge Stephenson was kidnapped, raped and mutilated by Stephenson, and died 29 days later, leaving a testimony which resulted in the arrest and sentence delivered by the jury. She did a lot more: her tragedy was a wake-up call which suppressed the KKK's dominance in Indiana.
A terrific book!
OverDrive, thank you!

Thank you, Meredith :)) Another story proving that charlatans are among us and know how to dominate the minds and destroy democracy ..

Lorraine Congratulations, Beata! I will not read books like this as I get too upset. When I discovered the KKK had a big standing in NJ, I gave that history of NJ away. I did not even want it in the house. It is not that I am denying that this organization existed not just in NJ but in many states, but I guess I have a soft heart as I hate any kind of prejudice, lack of law, or injustice to anyone. I am a woman of strong beliefs, and having been a special education teacher for 24 years, I have been fighting for rights of ‘underdogs’ all my life. My nursery school teacher had to write a report card as I and my class were only 4. My mom saved them and gave them to me to read in my 20s. She wrote ‘at recess Lorri would stand up to anyone bullying some other child. She would defend the person being bullied friend or not’ or something to that effect. I felt as though my teacher when I was 4 knew me as an adult. You wrote a great review, and thank you for letting me know that Madge’s statement got those bastards convicted! You go, girl!

Lorraine, thank you for your incredible comment! Having strong beliefs and being always on the part of the weaker is the trait I've always admired! The card your Mum saved is precious, I am sure, and proves that we are shaped at the early stage of our lives. I can't recall drastic situations in which I defended a bullied friend but I hope I did :) Compassion and consideration are qualities close to me .. I'm not going to read too much on the KKK, this book gives a lot of insight into its history and it may suffice. As you may guess, my understanding is general and I like to expand my knowledge should an occasion arise :) BTW, I didn't know that women had been strongly involved in this organization, I don't think I've ever read about it earlier but as I say I don't know too much on KKK. Take care & have a wonderful weekend! :)

Lorraine It is amazing how women are continually ‘left out ‘ of history! I have been meaning to change that! 😉

Maureen Excellent review Beata!

message 18: by Libby (new)

Libby I'm unfamiliar with this part of KKK history in Indiana, Beata, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. I was aware that the KKK was a force to be reckoned with. I'm glad this woman lived long enough to give testimony that prevented their dominance in Indiana. 🌹

Louis Muñoz Thanks for your review. I remember a TV movie based on this story, back around 1989. John Heard played D.C. Stephenson, and Mel Harris from "thirtysomething" played Madge Oberholtzer. (Had to "cheat" to find out the name of the movie, which is "Cross Fire"/"Cross of Fire.")

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] Sounds like a winner, Beata, despite the horrific stories! It's on my TBR, but I'm not sure when I'll ever get to it!
