REVIEW IN ENGLISH

Since I bought this book on Spanish, I will do the review on bilingual. This biography is part of a line on Spanish of famous women in history, published by a publisher house from Spain.

The book cover all life of Jane Austen and while she died young and she is one of the most famous female authors of all time, it isn’t easy to make a biography of her, since oddly enough, many of her documents and letter were destroyed by some members of her own family, I don’t know if by carelessness, ignorance or jealousy, but the fact is that happened. Luckily, there were still some members of her family that they kept some of her documents and letters and even they published their own personal recollections of Jane Austen’s life.

Jane Austen only published six novels (also a short story) and even two of those novels were published after she passed away, but those six novels are truly pillars of the universal romance genre and inspirations for generations and generations of writers since then.

One of the key elements of Jane Austen’s work was her honesty showing how was the life of women in late 18th century and early 19th century on England, keeping a true testimony of their struggles of surviving a male dominated society where they even weren’t able to inherit properties or money without having to marry a man, therefore marriage was a survival necessity in that society and Jane Austen was able to portrait different scenarios, but where beyond convenience marriages, she always prioritize true love marriages.

Ironically, she never marry, but it wasn’t by choice per se, but destiny just hadn’t that kind of path for her, but instead becoming one of the most influential and relevant romance writers of all time.

Emily I've read that Jane Austen's sister destroyed most of her personal writings because Jane had opinions that would have been rather scandalous at the time.

Federico DN I can't believe I'm still yet to read anything by Austen or any of the Brontes. Shameful. Wonderful review Alejandro! Her fame speaks for herself; a superb writer indeed :)

Yes, in the book mentioned about it, but I still have my doubts of the real reasons. The sister could just keep them for herself, not making public and not destroy them. A couple of centuries later it wouldn't matter the contents and they would help to understand better Jane's inner mind.

I still have to engage into Bronte sisters myself ;) I know a lot about their novels, even watch some adaptations, but I haven't read them properly.

About Austen, I can recommend you to begin with "Sense and Sensibility" whenever you wish. Usually, Austen's fans prefer better "Pride and Prejudice" and certainly it's a really good novel too, but since I knew about Austen through the film adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility" I have this one as my favorite of the bunch. In any case, you may read the sinopsis of all six and choose the one you find more interesting ;)

Thank you for the rec Alejandro! I have a strong aversion to long novels, so that's why I was planning to start with 'Pride and Prejudice' first, which is considerably shorter; but after that next is 'Sense and Sensibility' for sure ;)

Yes, I totally understand your hesitation about long novels, I have the same problem. So, it's a good plan to begin with a shorter one and after all, it's her signature book, so it's a real good choice ;) It's quite a long shot that you may engage into the six novels in any time soon, I just recommend to leave "Emma" as the last one or even if you wish not read it at all, I liked but maybe because I was already an obsessive Austen fan by then hehehe, so "Emma" is not the most representative of her work, but I have give it that it's the most different of her personal style (the "Clueless" free modern adaptation is one of my favorite movies ironically :P).

Federico DN Lol. Didn't know Clueless was based on it. Loved that movie <3, and still can't get over Brittany Murphy's passing. I heard mixed things regarding Emma so I have no problem placing it for last. Dunno if I'll read all her novels, most likely yes, eventually, within the next decade or so. And I'm not familiar with all her works, but will try to save Emma for the very last xD

Yes, it was too sad about Brittany Murphy :(
Since we're talking about movies, another option for "Sense and Sensibility" since it's one of the thickest books by Austen, you can try the movie adaptation with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman. I highly recommend the film! You can ponder about it.

Federico DN Thank you for the rec Alejandro! To my surprise I already had the movie on my TBW, along with other three thousand movies waiting to be watched lol. Will get to it, eventually. Probably the book first, but we'll see xD

Hahaha, Truly glad that between the 3000 movies, you already had that one ;) :P I know how to have a massive list of movies to watch ;) Hopefully you'd be able to watch in the near future and you may enjoy it ;) Book or movie, any format would be good ;) But movie is faster and easier to digest and that version is quite well adapted ;)
