I'm not sure how Ann Patchett keeps getting better and better with each book, but she does. I have loved them all, some more than others, but this is my favorite, probably until the next one.
A master at her craft, the top of her game, a writer's writer, literary superstar....take your pick of cliches, they're all true, at least for me.

Tom Lake is a place, not a person, as I thought before reading it. It's a beautiful tribute to Thornton Wilder's Our Town. Lara played Emily Webb, the female lead, in high school, then went on years later to play her in summer stock theater in Tom Lake, Michigan. She falls in love with another actor, who goes on to become a famous movie star. She later marries the owner of a cherry farm in Michigan and raises a family. During the Covid shutdown, her three adult daughters come home to spend the summer helping in the cherry orchard, and beg for the story of her relationship to the actor. Which they get, in bits and pieces, but not all of it; no mother is going to tell her daughters everything.

Our Town infuses the whole plot, wrapped around the Tom Lake action, but the present day scenes as well. Lara wouldn't be where she is without Our Town, her life would be poorer had it never happened. This novel takes place in different timelines, so expertly done that we readers are always there, never really knowing how it's going to pan out, but knowing that it will. Surprises all along the way, pleasant ones mostly, leading to an ending that couldn't be more perfect. Patchett gives us the same wisdom as Wilder did. Things happen, life goes on, we all do the best we can in our own little corners of the world.

I read Our Town in high school, later saw a stage production of it, and yesterday watched the 1940 film version. The sound and picture quality is awful, but the acting is pretty good. I'm betting that sales of the play are going to skyrocket after this book, and local and national theater groups will decide to bring it back. Tom Lake is a great book even if you aren't familiar with the play, but the play itself is pretty spectacular. Read them both, just for the sheer entertainment value.

Cathrine ☯️ I watched that 1940 film about 6 months ago. Horrible quality, I agree. Reading this one soon with some buddies.

Diane Barnes I'm betting you'll like it Cathrine.

Lisa A wonderful review, Diane! My name will eventually rise to the top of the library waiting list for this one.
FYI, Our Town is still pretty popular in community and high school theaters. I see it popping up semi-locally at least every other year.

Angela M is taking a little summer break Diane , another writer we definitely agree on ! Loved everything about this story . Fantastic review.

Karen Wonderful review, Diane! I’ve only read a few of her books… and I’ve enjoyed them all.

Carol A splendid review, Diane. I'm interested!

Diane Barnes You're right Lisa, and I intend to go to the next one that's locally produced. Fortunately, I was first on the list at my library, so I got it quickly.

Diane Barnes Thanks Angela, your own review was fantastic.

Diane Barnes Karen, Margaret, Carol, thanks. Patchett is a superb storyteller.

Megan Gibbs Great review, and another author for me to explore, I was just thinking as I was reading your review I would get more from the book if I read the play first so perhaps I’ll do that while I’m waiting for the paperback to be released in the UK

Diane Barnes Good idea Megan. I just got on the list at my library to reread the play.

Candi Terrific review, Diane! This sounds really good. I've been meaning to read Our Town, so perhaps I'll start there and then grab this later. I haven't read Patchett in some time either!

Diane Barnes Good reading ahead Candi!

Lorna Diane, what a beautiful review. Ann Patchett has long been a favorite writer. It sounds like this does not disappoint.

Antoinette Fantastic review, Diane! So happy to see you loved this book. I’m behind on Patchett’s books- May just skip ahead and go right for this one.

Diane Barnes It definitely does not disappoint Lorna. The way she gives tribute to Thornton Wilder is just brilliant. She even throws in a few quotes from Checkov's play, The Cherry Orchard.

Diane Barnes You certainly don't have to read Patchett in any kind of order Antoinette. Go ahead and skip. She makes me want to move to northern Michigan......except for the winters!

Wyndy I’m slowly moving up my library’s hold list. Looking forward to this one since I was underwhelmed by ‘The Dutch House.’ Five full stars from you bodes well ;-)

Anne I'm glad to see your review, Diane. After reading some early negative reviews I thought I might end up skipping this one.

Bianca Brilliant review, Diane. I can't wait to read thismyself.

Diane Barnes I loved it, Wyndy, but you'll know once you get started whether the story will pull you in or not.

Diane Barnes There are always negative reviews of what I consider really good books Anne. That's why I rely more on my like minded readers reviews than the general public.

Diane Barnes I hope you're able to get it soon in Australia Bianca.

Debbie Fantastic review! I love hearing how Patchett is a master. This sounds so good; can’t wait to read it! State of Wonder was one of those books that blew my mind, as it got me out of a 5-year reading slump!

Diane Barnes That's funny Debbie. State of Wonder was not one of my favories.. Mainly because I couldn't figure out why women would want to stay fertile into old age, lol!

Tatevik doesn’t get notifications I keep buying her books and not reading. I don't have this one, but now I need it after reading your review)))

Liz Wonderful review. You’re so right, she does just keep getting better and better!

message 29: by Antoinette (new) - added it

Antoinette Here’s a tough question for you, Diane. Would you buy this book if you could get a signed copy? Or should I wait for my library hold?

Diane Barnes That's a hard one, but a signed copy is always nice to have. I can see me reading it again at some point, so I'd go for the signed copy.

Lisa (NY) Diane, I agree, Patchett is at the top of her game here!

message 32: by Noelle (new) - added it

Noelle Simms Is it as good as the Dutch house? That’s one of my favourite books!

Diane Barnes And such a nice summertime book too, Lisa.

Diane Barnes I liked it better than Dutch House, Noelle.

Jennifer Welsh Good point, Diane, about how seamless the timelines were. Even listening to the audio, I never got lost. That says a lot. Now I'm wanting to get a hard copy of the book just to see how she does it.

Our Town really was he gift that kept on giving, wasn't it? I loved how that anchored things, as juxtaposed to Fool for Love. Even in that, there's symbolism.

Really enjoyed your thoughts, glad to share the love!

Diane Barnes I thought she handled the whole Covid thing very well, using it as a reason for the family being together, but not making it a central theme.

Julie G Inspiring review, Diane. I'm looking forward to this one (though, personally, I'm still recovering from the damage that The Dutch House did to my relationship with Ms. Patchett!).
xoxo

Diane Barnes I thought this was a better, more relatable story than Dutch House, so maybe this will get her back in your good graces. If you really want to relate, imagine telling your own daughters once they are grown some of the things in your past.

Jennifer Welsh Diane wrote: "I thought she handled the whole Covid thing very well, using it as a reason for the family being together, but not making it a central theme."

I agree! So well done, even the dread we all felt (and still feel!) about it all seeming so apocalyptic, written in threads of thought that never took over the weave.

Julie G Diane,
I loved State of Wonder and Bel Canto (though I would like to point out that those were 2 of the most controversial books my book club ever discussed--there was actual SHOUTING), but she lost me at The Dutch House.
I think her work is interesting; for whatever reason, it is very polarizing, and I find that she has either completely devoted fans or people (like one-third of my book club) who have declared that they'll never pick up a book of hers again.
It ain't easy being an artist, y'all!!
(P.S. I just finished Gail Godwin's A MOTHER AND TWO DAUGHTERS and it is now my second favorite book set in the state of North Carolina. I thought of you as I was reading it).

Diane Barnes I used to love Gail Godwin's books, but found her last couple a bit uneven and vague.

message 42: by Julie (new)

Julie G Tell me more, Diane. I wasn't sure where to head next with her.

Diane Barnes A Southern Family, The Odd Woman, Father Melancholy 's Daughter and Evensong were my favorites.

message 44: by Julie (new)

Julie G Thank you. I'll look them up now.

message 45: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb Urbano There is a 2003 PBS video of Our Town which I found at my local library. (featuring Jane Curtin and Paul Newman.

message 46: by Q (new)

Q Diane. Your happiness in reading this brought a smile. Thx for a nice review.

Diane Barnes Thanks Q. I thought it was a perfect summer book.

message 48: by Ron (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ron Feels right in what you say about the new coming popularity of Our Town. I will be one looking into it. Though the ending sounds sad, it must be one that endures because the theme of family and community are always with us. Some of that can be compared to this book. Good to see you have read many of Patchett's books too. I will try more.

Diane Barnes Our Town is a true piece of Americana. I hope you get a chance to read/see it.
