it was ok

⚠️ Warning - long rant ahead ⚠️

TL;DR version - this didn’t work for me at all, but everyone else seems to love it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mark this down as yet another super hyped book that didn’t work for me. I’ve seen nothing but glowing reviews for this, but I really didn’t like it. It was painfully slow and far too long, it easily could have been trimmed back 100+ pages without losing anything important. There are also side plots that added very little to the story. This is classified as a Literary Thriller but it is not at all thrilling. I would really say its more part Literary slow burn mystery and part coming of age story.

I found the MC Bodie frustrating - she’s whiny, annoying and self absorbed in that everything has to relate back to her. So much time is spent by Bodie taking the story of her friends murder and trying to focus it on herself and her issues at the school. While also being sure to tell everyone that the podcast about the murder totally wasn’t her idea - literally this is the first thing she says to multiple people who she hasn’t talked to in years. Priorities. 🙄

I often find that Literary Fiction books focus on social issues, but this one felt like it was trying to hit upon far too many. Gender norms, racism, me too era, covid, the justice system, misogyny, cancel culture, sexual assault, predatory behavior and more, yes more! I think this would have been more effective if the author had focused on a few of these issues and really dug in and analyzed and challenged what could be done about them, or how the full impact of each is felt. Instead it was done in a very heavy handed way and issues were brought up and then quickly discarded.

There were so many characters to keep track of between the present timeline and her past time at the school and I really struggled to remember who was who. I did this on audio which probably helped contribute to this confusion, but eventually I gave up on trying to keep all the minor players straight. Randomly the MC would just begin to start listing out a variety of cases with women as the victim (was it the one about the women who was found in the dumpster, or no was it the one about… etc) which for me didn’t have the impact I think she was going for, and instead I ended up skipping past these sections after the first two instances.

When part two begins I thought it might finally pick up, but then the way its done we have to get all the information second hand which does not make for exciting reading. Things took a wildly unbelievable turn and felt very Scooby Doo in how things were found out. I really did not like how it ended, it annoyed me and I felt like I walked away from this wondering what point the author was trying to make. I gave it 2⭐️ bc I did finish it, but I also feel like I stuck it out only bc I’d already invested so much time in the far too long book.

Sharon Your review was spot on. I only made it to 70 pages. Too much of a tirade and not enough story. Not sure what the point was for introducing all the social injustices because not once did the main character do anything about them. Always poor, poor pitiful me…

You didn’t miss anything with the rest of the book. I really wish I had DNF’d it and instead I was hate reading it 😂 I’m glad so many loved it but I really didn’t like it at all.

Lynn Wilmas 💯 too slow, repetitive and 😴. I gave up

Diana same- I couldn’t get through it - so boring and wasn’t going anywhere

Greta Eoff The lists… ugh. Glad I wasn’t the only one who didn’t love those. And… I wonder who was watching her kids? (Could that have been mentioned a few more times?)

Marilyn Fernandez I’m so glad I’m not the only one feeling the same way. I’m not even trying to finish this. It’s awful! And I got the audio because of Julia but I can’t even hang on for her lol

Steph Lynn wrote: "💯 too slow, repetitive and 😴. I gave up"

I wish I had given up, you missed absolutely nothing!

Steph Diana wrote: "same- I couldn’t get through it - so boring and wasn’t going anywhere"

I couldn’t believe how long it was since nothing really happens!

Steph Greta wrote: "The lists… ugh. Glad I wasn’t the only one who didn’t love those. And… I wonder who was watching her kids? (Could that have been mentioned a few more times?)"

I feel like if you removed the kinda husband and her kids, it would have been at least a small amount better. That aspect was so dumb. And oh those lists. Why did anyone thing those were a good idea??

Steph Marilyn wrote: "I’m so glad I’m not the only one feeling the same way. I’m not even trying to finish this. It’s awful! And I got the audio because of Julia but I can’t even hang on for her lol"

Her narration was the only good thing about it, but definitely not worth sticking around for it all. It was not good at all and just kept going and going!

Steph Elyse wrote: "Your rant worked for me!"

I was so annoyed with this book, I was still complaining to my buddy read people a week later lol

message 12: by Larry (new) - rated it 1 star

Larry I was going to write a review but you pretty much said what I was thinking. There may have been an interesting plot in there somewhere but the self absorbed whining drowned it out.

Stephani Dill +1 to pretty much everything you said. I could not have cared less who did it, nor did I feel like the book had a “point” because it had so many. I think these academic thrillers are just not my jam.

CopaSribe And just soooo much telling. How does this book have so many stars??

message 15: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I've been pushing myself to read it and at page 163 I've decided to let it go. I really don't care at all who did what to who.

Steph Larry wrote: "I was going to write a review but you pretty much said what I was thinking. There may have been an interesting plot in there somewhere but the self absorbed whining drowned it out."

I do wonder if with better editing and removing unnecessary parts if it would have been decent but as it was it just did not work!

Steph Stephani wrote: "+1 to pretty much everything you said. I could not have cared less who did it, nor did I feel like the book had a “point” because it had so many. I think these academic thrillers are just not my jam."

Agreed - there have been very few of the Literary thrillers that work for me at all.

Steph Dez wrote: "And just soooo much telling. How does this book have so many stars??"

I’ve seen so many reviews calling it their favorite book of the year and I’m convinced they read a different version than I did 😂

Steph Lisa wrote: "I've been pushing myself to read it and at page 163 I've decided to let it go. I really don't care at all who did what to who."

I wish I had abandoned it, it was absolutely not worth finishing.

message 20: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna J Agree with everything! This was sooooo difficult to get through. +1 feeling unsatisfied about not understanding what we're supposed "to get from reading this" because of all the issues Makkai tried to jam pack throughout.

Steph Anna wrote: "Agree with everything! This was sooooo difficult to get through. +1 feeling unsatisfied about not understanding what we're supposed "to get from reading this" because of all the issues Makkai tried..."
It truly suffered from all the many, many issues she tried to jam into the plot. I only finished it bc I had already wasted so much time on it.

message 22: by BookishBeba (new) - added it

BookishBeba Painful is the right word. Thanks for this review; I am going to close this one and feel okay about not finishing it.

Dianna Glad I’m not alone! I feel like I’ve been forcing myself to slog through this book. It bounces around in perspective, tense, and time period with seemingly no transition. I don’t even care who killed this girl anymore; I just want this book to end! Kind of sorry I didn’t dump it early on.

Tammy Kohout I am glad I am not the only one that just felt it was slow and painful. I will admit after getting through almost half the book, I skipped to the last quarter of the book and thought that the last quarter was a little better. (I never do that!!) I didn't even care that I wasn't sure who some of the people were I just wanted to get to the end. It was "eh" for me.

message 25: by Bev (new) - added it

Bev Very disappointing. I could not have cared less about any of the novel's many characters. This book lacked empathy.

message 26: by Lisa (new) - added it

Lisa Ridiculously long. A million irrelevant characters. Too many plots trying to push points through. Just too much.

message 27: by Renee (new)

Renee Wallace Exactly! I finished it, because I really believed SOMETHING worthwhile would happen… but no. A disappointment and a feeling of wasted time on my part.

Caitlin Storey Omg yes! I listened to this on audible! 14 hours of non-stop side stories, rants, “this is the one where..”, like we get it just move on with the plot… and the. To just end so flatly with no resolution!!!
14 hours of my life wasted. So upset!

Kymberley Ballato I’m 15% into the book and I already know I’m done. Page 75 out of 493 is enough to know this is not a thriller. The other reviews confirm my feelings.

Shannon This book was 200 pages too long. Def NOT a thriller but a “whoDunIt”

message 31: by Pat (new) - rated it 2 stars

Pat You nailed what's bothering me about this book. I'm about a third into it and thinking about giving up. The MC is totally self absorbed and has such a teenage voice. I wonder if the author is a bit immature herself. The Great Believets was beautiful. This...meh.

Deirdre Swagerty It's not until page 300 or so that something "intereting" starts to happen. I agree Bodie, the narrator, was bothersome. The book could have been so much better.

Rosaria Fully agree! So damn long I lost interest and could careless.

Debbie I didn’t like it either! Couldn’t finish it!

Morgan I read this in print and felt the same!

Vickie Cerati I have to agree with all the comments posted here.

message 37: by Wyllow (new)

Wyllow 19 pages in so far and can’t believe how many social justice issues have been rammed down my throat. This review has helped me decide this book likely isn’t for me. Thanks

message 38: by Paula (new) - rated it 1 star

Paula Prudenti Couldn’t agree more - what an overhyped book. I hated the main character. Could not wait to finish it.

Kylie Felt exactly the same! Ended up not finishing it. Just couldn't care.

Danielle 100% agree—this was a book that I didn’t care if I picked up again after page 30. I made it another 125 pages and decided there are too many good books out there to spend anymore time on this one!

message 41: by Jc (new)

Jc I agree with a lot of what you've written. It felt repetitive, and there was zero suspense. There were, however, some good themes. I though Makkai did a pretty good job discussing cancel culture (i hate that term but...), altho I'm not sure it really fit with the story she was trying to tell...

Emily Watt agreed! i cant believe how long this book was and how little happened. i thought about giving up around page 125, but for sure thought it’d get better. i couldn’t wait to finish.

Paula Hagar I couldn't agree with you more, Steph.

Steph Jc wrote: "I agree with a lot of what you've written. It felt repetitive, and there was zero suspense. There were, however, some good themes. I though Makkai did a pretty good job discussing cancel culture (i..."

I agree, I feel like the cancel culture part would have made a great plot for a separate book, it was interesting but felt like it didn’t quite fit here to me

Steph Wyllow wrote: "19 pages in so far and can’t believe how many social justice issues have been rammed down my throat. This review has helped me decide this book likely isn’t for me. Thanks"

It had so many it tried to include and just ended up not doing any of them well - I definitely wish I had set it aside!

Steph Pat wrote: "You nailed what's bothering me about this book. I'm about a third into it and thinking about giving up. The MC is totally self absorbed and has such a teenage voice. I wonder if the author is a bit..."

I haven’t read anything else by the author and after this I’d be very hesitant to! The MC definitely would have worked better in a YA novel

Steph Danielle wrote: "100% agree—this was a book that I didn’t care if I picked up again after page 30. I made it another 125 pages and decided there are too many good books out there to spend anymore time on this one!"

I absolutely should have made that decision too, you missed nothing by dropping it!

Steph Emily wrote: "agreed! i cant believe how long this book was and how little happened. i thought about giving up around page 125, but for sure thought it’d get better. i couldn’t wait to finish."

I definitely wish I had given up on it, so long and it really didn’t interest me!

Steph Paula wrote: "I couldn't agree with you more, Steph."

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one! I’d seen so many rave reviews and felt like I read a different book 😂

Joyce Mathis I agree it was a book club read or I would not have finished it. I still don’t know who killed who. I always finish books even if I hate it.
