** spoiler alert ** 2.0 stars — I have heard a lot of talk about “All Good People Here” due to it being the first novel written by Ashley Flowers, the host of the popular podcast, “Crime Junkie.” My thoughts after reading this book are — Flowers does a great job as the host of the popular podcast, “Crime Junkies.”
Maybe the podcast recently covered the Jon Benet Ramsay murder because the first third of the book is almost identical to the details of that crime. The book diverges from there, but despite a story that has its interesting moments, the writing is so poor that it detracts from what could have been a good murder mystery. The main character, Margot, is a local reporter who returns home to take care of her ailing uncle while working remotely from his home. When a local girl is murdered under similar circumstances as the unsolved murder of Margot’s childhood best friend, Margot goes on a mission to try and prove they’re connected and solve them both. The story requires the reader to put away his/her common sense on multiple occasions which becomes harder with each eye rolling moment. A mother convinced her 6 YEAR OLD son beat his twin sister to death..Yep. A wife and mother who professes to never have been gay decides in middle age to enter into a long term lesbian relationship with an old classmate (wouldnt she have had some attraction before then).. why not? And my favorite… a character kidnapped after standing outside at night and turning her back on an approaching vehicle, whose driver pulls to a stop, the driver exits and an older woman kidnapper grabs the character from behind and drags her back to her vehicle where she forces her inside and drives away. Trust me I had to read it twice and still can’t believe this was part of this novel. ANNNNNND my biggest gripe of all: she doesn’t reveal what happens to the main character and the story is left unresolved. I HATE that most of all, and can’t remember an author who left the reader with such a giant question mark for an ending. So if there is a sequel someone let me know what happened because I’m not reading it.

Courtney Autumn I'm not a fan of her podcast or her given the plagiarism in the past so I wasn't planning to pick this one up to read; given this review, I'm even more glad to not read it! Hope your next book is a better read for you!

message 2: by Joe (new)

Joe Krakovsky I am still giggling at the stupid people. I thought your review was funny.

message 3: by Debra (new) - added it

Debra Love your review, Joey! I will not be reading this one.

message 4: by Susan (new)

Susan I gave up halfway. The similarities to the JonBenet case were to much for me. Thank you for your review you saved me from having to finish.

Joey R. Lol. I should have too. Not my favorite book for sure

message 6: by Federico (new)

Federico DN Please read one more book. Your current number is baaad luck xD. Also great review lol !

message 7: by Holly (new)

Holly B (slower pace!) Thanks for the review!

JanB I completely agree! And sorry, I can’t help you out because I won’t be reading the sequel either!

Melissa (Trying to Catch Up) I totally agree with your review!

message 10: by Lee (new) - rated it 2 stars

Lee Ann I agree with your review! Although I did enjoy parts of this book, the abrupt ending was jaw dropping. Thanks for sharing the review!

Lindsey Lewis The being middle aged entering your first gay relationship thing is actually the most believable plot of this entire book, actually

Margie Navolio Totally agree with your review. Gave this 1 star. Had moments but I skimmed a lot of the back half of this book. The ending was awful. What a lazy cop out. It’s as if she just got as bored with it as I was and said what the heck. I’m done. Boo.

message 13: by Linden (new)

Linden Great review, Joey.

message 14: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. Thank all of you and Margie that was the way I felt too. Either that or trying to make you want to read the sequel by leaving the book unfinished

Maddy Killian I'll take "I don't know how coming out or sexuality works" for $800 Alex.

message 16: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. 😂😂You are correct. I am definitely not an expert on this topic(ok I’m totally ignorant). I just thought it was strange that she had never even felt an attraction for another woman before entering into a full blown lesbian affair.

Dawn Marie Why did Jodie have to kidnap Margot so dramatically? Couldn’t she have just asked her to have coffee to discuss what she knew??

message 18: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. I agree 100 percent. It just wasn't necessary for her to abduct her to tell her this information. There was no real hostility. Coffee would have been a better idea lol

Phyllis Should have read your review before reading the book!

Laura Thank you Joey for this review. Absolutely like watching a train wreck. Sorry that I finished it and really don’t care about the cliffhanger. No interest whatsoever in finding out.

Melanie Fredrickson Agree 💯

LeAnn While I disagree with your point about her having prior attraction to women before Jodie, I agree with the rest. Margot would have totally had coffee with Jodie and the kidnapping wouldn’t have been necessary. And how convenient that Margot was outside when Jodie happened to drive up and somehow sneak up on and overpower Margot. And the brazen links to the JonBenet Ramsey case were so lazy.
The whole story felt very contrived.

Joey R. Thank you Elyse. I hope your appointments go well and you get better soon. I appreciate all your uplifting comments and helping me through Covid. Maybe you won’t read any books about Matthew Perry in 2023.

Leann — exactly what I thought too. Why don’t you just change the name of the victim to Jon Benet. It sure made writing the story easier when a lot of it was exactly like the facts of that case

message 24: by Zain (new)

Zain It sounds like a wonderful book, Joey. I can’t wait to read it. Sikes!
Wonderful review, and that’s no joke. 😘

Rachael Hodson (still skiing) Totally agree!

message 26: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. Haha thank you Zain and Rachael

message 27: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie Lucas Thanks so much! I don't like when they move so slowly, but a bad ending is worse. I will avoid this one.

Doris Aguila-Mendoza I would like to add that her podcast is called Crime Junkie and not junkies.

message 29: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. I will edit that. Thank you

message 30: by Glenda (new)

Glenda I want to listen to her podcast. This was an excellent review but doesn’t seem likely to be added to my TBR list.

Sandra Basile Your review is excellent, Joey! Makes me think mine was too soft on Libby (the library app) - I tagged it with “Wasted 11hrs”

message 32: by eyes.2c (new)

eyes.2c Great review. Love your last sentence!

Mindy Agree - horrible ending

message 34: by Jill Howlett (new) - added it

Jill Howlett Agree!!

Carey What about this? Said woman was not afraid to KIDNAP ANOTHER PERSON but breaking into a storage unit scared the heck out of her.

message 36: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. Good one. I didn’t notice that one but definitely can add it to the list of problems and inconsistencies in the book.

Michelle The book was slow in a few places-that’s ok. Characters were semi-developed -forgivable. The ending- not ok and not forgivable. 1 star, because there didn’t appear to be any typos, lol

Daniella Atkinson I also got Jon Benet vibes too!

Marisa Devine This book was trash

message 40: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. I’m glad all of you agree. Definitely won’t be back for the sequel

Elaine Definite flaws in this book but the ending was completely unacceptable.

message 42: by Libby (new) - added it

Libby Odom Did it bother you that she got locked out of the house twice but had been on her way to make a copy of the house key? How do you make a copy of a key without a key...or why are you locked out if you are carrying the key around to make a copy?

message 43: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. HAha. I never noticed that but add that to the list for sure.

DESIREE Agreed!!!! This book makes no sense.

Adriana Krupka It bothered me that (BIG SPOILER ALERT) January was murdered and just coincidentally was also being followed by a serial murderer? Like wasn’t that just too big of a coincidence? Margot found all the stalker evidence, but he actually didn’t murder her. Totally impossible for me to believe.

message 46: by Ruth (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ruth Judy Thank you for stating that you had to re-read certain parts. I listened to this book and kept having to go back thinking I skipped a chapter in error. There were a few plot points that were hard to accept but the unresolved ending was my least favorite.

message 47: by Lila (new) - added it

Lila Or that there was apparently absolutely no evidence of her being killed in the basement but the dogs could smell a deceased body in the trunk of the car

message 48: by Joey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joey R. Y’all are good. I never thought of that one either. I need to start reading a little closer

Savanna Pierce I also don’t understand who exactly killed Chrissy… I mean, it seems like it was Billy, but based on the timeline of the story, you’re telling me he just happened to kill her in 2009 - over a decade after January’s death, and on the same day that Chrissy went and told Dave (Luke) about the twins being his… I mean, why did Billy wait so long to kill her if he apparently already knew about the twins not being his, from his conversation with Dave on the night of January’s death…

Samantha Dilocker Yes, Savanna! I also don’t understand who killed Krissy. The date makes me think it was still Luke/Dave, but it’s unclear!
