it was amazing

It’s barely Halloween. The ball won’t drop in Times Square for another two full months, and more good books will surely appear before the year ends. But I already know: My favorite novel of 2022 is Barbara Kingsolver’s “Demon Copperhead.”

Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, this is the story of an irrepressible boy nobody wants, but readers will love. Damon is the only child of a teenage alcoholic — “an expert at rehab” — in southwest Virginia. He becomes aware of his status early, around the same time he gets the nickname Demon. “I was a lowlife,” he says, “born in the mobile home, so that’s like the Eagle Scout of trailer trash.” The more he grasps the connotations of words like “hick” and “redneck,” the more discouraged he becomes. “This is what I would say if I could, to all the smart people of the world with their dumb hillbilly jokes. …We can actually hear you.”

Now, we can hear him.

“You get to a point of not giving a damn over people thinking you’re worthless,” he says. “Mainly by getting there first yourself.”

Demon is right about America’s condescending derision, but he’s wrong about his own worth. In a feat of literary alchemy, Kingsolver uses the fire of that boy’s spirit to illuminate — and singe — the darkest recesses of our country.

The essential Americanness of “Demon Copperhead” feels particularly ironic given that Kingsolver has drawn her inspiration directly from one of England’s most celebrated classics: “David Copperfield,” by Charles Dickens. In a brief afterword, Kingsolver expresses her gratitude to Dickens and acknowledges....

Evonne Thank you for this, Ron! I pre-ordered this months ago, and it was delivered on my 65th birthday, but it was relegated to the TBR pile. Now I will be moving it up, way way up!

Laura Rogers That is high praise indeed! I have read a number of Kingsolver's books and The Poisonwood Bible is a particular favorite. Could Demon Copperhead trump it? Awaiting a library copy in 15 days! So glad you loved it.

Angela what a wonderful review, Ron! I am a longtime BK fan and have been looking forward to Demon Copperhead all year! I recently re-read her Essay Collection High Tide in Tucson published in 1995 and it felt incredibly current. You've said that "Demon Copperhead" will be your favorite novel of 2022. Is it also your favorite Barbara Kingsolver Novel? I've not read this new one but Prodigal Summer has been in the #1 spot for me ever since I first read it. Thanks as always for your excellent reviews.

Thanks, Angela. And yes, I would say this is also my favorite Kingsolver novel.

Elizabeth Roberts-Zibbel I couldn’t wait to read your review (I love everything you write and usually agree), as I just finished it myself. DC is not only now my favorite Kingsolver novel, but one of my favorites of all time. Thanks for the great work you do!

Meg Such a great review - can’t wait to read it but I’ve got the 200+ spot on my library waiting list!

Jeff Oh…good! Read five pages in the store the other day, could NOT put it down, and have been mystified by some mixed reviews. This is reassuring.

Karen My first Barbara Kingsolver and I’m blown away! I’ve been waiting for your review! I was hoping it would be positive but this! Awesome!!!

Thanks, Ron!

Susan Great minds think alike. In my review I said it was one of my favorites of 2022. Loved Demon

Kimberly My sentiments exactly, Ron. I literally couldn’t put it down until I finished it. Hands down the best novel I’ve read in 2022, and I’ve read a lot!

Patricia I was going to write a review but decided to share yours instead. You writing captures this remarkable book, a feat in itself. .

Erin Carroll I listened to the audiobook and laughed out loud at parts, teared up at parts, and shook my head a lot at parts. It was such a long winding road for him that I wish more time was spent on his time facing his substance use disorders. I felt like Kingsolver took us on an odyssey of his early life, skipped over the hard work of trying to get healthy and then what happens thereafter. Still, it will be my favorite book of the year. I wish her writing wasn’t so infrequent but when she does release a book, it is most definitely worth the wait ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Elizabeth Evans Yes Ron!

message 17: by Pam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pam Thank you for this well written review. By the time I closed the last page of Demon Copperhead, I’d completed 106 books for the year. This was my Number #1.

Susan Olson Agreed!

Mariska Breland Good to know we’re back in Poisonwood land. I was going to skip it!

message 20: by Tall (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tall I just finished it and was stunned by it. Loved it. It will stay with me for a long time. Your review is spot-on. Thanks!

Ellen Ms. Kingsolver is back! I listened to the audiobook and loved Demon from the very beginning. The speaker reading the audiobook was mesmerizing. The characters were complex and believable. It was certainly my favorite book of 2022.

message 22: by Dave (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dave Yarnold Great review and a great read. Thanks for inspiring me to pick this one up. Rarely have I rooted as hard for a character in a book, as I have for Demon.

Helen Machuga Yes, Ron, perfect. I had a hard time putting it down. Wonderful book. Definitely #1 for me this year!

Ariana Incredible work of literature. I wish it was required reading for Americans.

Connie Morency Rhodes One of the most brilliant books I’ve read in quite a long while. Loved it!

Chris Nienhuis I was enthralled by this book from the very beginning. Demo was the hero I didn’t want to give up on. But I almost did. My heart ached for him with all his tragedy. But the good guy always wins in the end. I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. Best read in a very long time!

Jackie @Ron- “Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking.” Pls do tell what parts were hilarious? I was completely crushed by it- all I could do was scream for Team Demon-

message 28: by Jack (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jack Really?

Rachel Kingsolver has been a favorite of mine for years (definitely in my Top 5)… I’m still up @ 3:30 a.m. because I can’t put it down. Love your review!

message 30: by Mona (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mona Alas, I can’t read the rest of your review because of WAPO’s omnipresent paywall.

Kristy York I hated this book. I loved this book. Kingsolver is such a gifted writer. This book will stay with me for a very long time.

Nancy It's definitely one of my favourite reads this year. I read Poisonwood Bible years ago and loved that one too! Such a great story teller.

Elizabeth Evans Ron. This is still my favorite review of Demon ever!!!

April Lehmann I’m also wondering where the hilarious parts of this were?

It's been a while, but I remember reading many very funny lines to my wife.

Happy to help:

"Once this fierce tiny towheaded girl got so fed up of a big guy calling her Q-tip, she stood on the seat behind him and cracked her Etch A Sketch over his head. Screen side down, the silver shit running down to cover his whole face. Picture Tin Man out of the Oz movie. That girl was going places. Probably she's the president of something by now. At the least, not pregnant." p. 72

message 37: by Marion (new) - added it

Marion There was so much cruel treatment of the kid, I couldn’t find any of it funny. I know I’m in the minority, but I just couldn’t finish it.

Lesley Parker I gave up on it today, about 90pc in. There’s nothing wrong with a book being long (I read War and Peace) but this could have been tighter. Skilful writing, yes, but too much of it.

Allie Keith Agree there were some funny parts but I can’t think of a single line to add for those curious which particular parts we found funny. This is a story that’ll be extremely relatable for some and not so much for others and maybe that has something to do with the differing opinions on whether or not there was any humor to be found in Demon Copperhead. I grew up in rural poverty and could put a face to every single character bc I’ve actually known that person. I think the funnier parts, for me atleast, were just the insanely accurate descriptions of some absurd situations and the lack of self awareness of certain people. So many times while reading this I could place myself or someone I know in a conversation or event and then I’d have to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. It’s just needing to laugh about how nail-on-the-head Kingslover got with so much of this book bc she’s talking about my sister and the kids she should be raising but isn’t, or my best friend who didn’t make it a year past high school graduation before he ate a bullet, or my husband who’s still paying the price for those football state championships he sacrificed his body to win a million years ago bc that was his only ticket out, or my cousin who only knows her mom from supervised visits at the Department of Human Resources bc no matter how many times she goes through rehab she just can’t stay sober. It’s not a barrel of laughs, but it is absurdly funny.

message 40: by Jan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jan By far, this was my favorite book I’ve read in 2023. Heartbreaking and hard to read at times, the narrative running through Demon’s mind is what keeps this novel from being really heavy, even though everything in my being recalls how tragic it all is. Kingsolver seems to have captured thoughts of a 10 year old in constant turmoil. I absolutely loved this one.

A. F. (Addy) Whitehouse A tour de force. Kingsolver at her very best, and that's saying something.

Michèle Nothing funny. Nothing

message 43: by SMC (new) - rated it 5 stars

SMC Nothing funny about the actual story. And there wasn’t a hilarious moment in the book. But in the stream of Demons thoughts and the conversations with Maggot and others, I found many hilarious comments, words, remarks, etc.

message 44: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Hermann I also loved the book. Inn the audio version I would like to know if the reader is male or female? Seems like it would be in Damon's voice...right?

Cathy I read the digital version while listening to the audiobook. It was read in Demon’s voice. It was heartbreaking and sad; an honest reflection of poverty, drugs, and the foster care system- or at least as seen through my lens as a Title 1 public schoolteacher. Just when I thought Demon had found a way out, fate pulled the rug out from underneath him.

Adrianna Excellent review. Thank you.

message 47: by Anna (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anna Bullard Nancy- yes the Audiobook is read by a male with a slight drawl. Pert near perfect voice, I think!

message 48: by doretta (new) - added it

doretta martelli Think how it would be if Nate Bargatze were reading it — telling the story. Honestly, I’m not an audiobook fan, but I did enjoy listening to this one.

Katie Great review! While there was nothing funny about the subject matter in the book, often Demon’s perspective, thoughts and literal interpretation as a child (then teenager) about various situations and human behaviors had me LOL’ing. Then, of course, my heart would be torn out by the depressing”-ness” of situations he was continually subjected to. Definitely my favorite book this year.

message 50: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue J It was my favorite book for quite a while. I just couldn't put it down, in spite of its length.
