In life, I have one favorite thing and one least favorite thing.

My favorite thing is laughing. I am possibly the easiest laugh in the entirety of the human population. I chuckle through every interaction, I giggle at every standup special I've ever seen, I have been known to grin at commercials, greeting cards, and just about all paragons of humorlessness. I love this about myself, both because it makes daily life fun and because when I date men I love watching the horror as they realize that they are not exceptionally funny, I just think everyone is.

My least favorite thing is science. When I was still in school, I was a sickeningly obsessive student, addicted to studying and to good grades and to Learning. But science never made sense to me, and was thus my nemesis. When I went to college, the lack of hard science requirement at my chosen institution sealed the deal in terms of who I would pay absurd money to for several years in exchange for a piece of paper.

But when I read The Martian, I didn't hate the science, so I was excited for this book.

And here is where a cruel joke is played by the universe:

The best part of this book is my least favorite part about human existence, and the worst part is my favorite.

In other words, the science of this is interesting and fun, but the humor is corny and unfunny.

I don't even know what to do with myself.

Bottom line: Perhaps nothing will ever live up to the Martian for me!

literally and on purpose.

Nic can confirm, this is exactly what I wanted from it too and was expecting to be disappointed, BUT I WAS NOT. I loved it just as much (and possibly even a little more) than the martian, which shocked tf out of me.

i heard bad things about artemis and so never picked it up!

Tarun I have to say, I really disliked this book, from the formulaic prose to the bland characters. But that just makes me more excited to see your review on this one!

Amanda Sola I love this book. Andy Weir's humor and the way he makes sci fi so easy to digest are great :)

message 24: by Emma (new)

Emma Ok but like book nerds who struggle with science REPRESENT! Everyone expects us to hate/be bad at math but I was good at math … it was the SCIENCE

Audrey I was always good at science. My problem with math is that I always end up changing a negative sign to a positive and mess up the whole thing.

the very mention of positive and negative gives me the heebie jeebies

Laurie I gotta say, I'm with you so far. The cringe-worthy attempts at humor are really detracting from the storyline for me. And upon reading another less-than-stellar review, I'm learning that there is going to be a...cute alien??
I just don't know if I can even.

Derek Beaugarde Sorry, ladies, but I loved this book. Even read it before The Martian. I love Andy Weir's attention to detail, which some may find boring. It's just how our brains work differently.

I loved both; loved the science.

John "But science never made sense to me..." I wouldn't be surprised if you had lousy science teachers and text. However, I hope that you realize that something is valid about science because otherwise, this whole world of electronics wouldn't exist.
