I love horror. I enjoy gothic horror. I enjoy books with female protagonists with crumbling houses and running away from an evil and has to have a male assist them... yeah. Sue me.

So you would think I would enjoy the Hacienda. I did and I didn't. I think that the author has a writing style that flows nicely and she has a good way of writing descriptions with gothic intent.

BUT... the story itself was just not that strong.

You have this ongoing reference on her father and the war going on around them, the Inquisition too. The author keeps making references about it to get me to care, it pops up a lot. Yet, nothing is related to it. I really thought the dead wife had something to do with it. Nope.

The book gave me Rebecca vibes, and I do love Rebecca. I just felt like it fell flat to me. It could have been a lot more gothic, a lot more creepy, and a lot more rooted in Mexican Folklore. :/ If those issues are not what you care about then you'll enjoy this book. I just thought we'd get a little more.

L nooooo :(

Sophie Agreed!

Andi The historical aspect did nothing for the plot and the constant reminding of her dad getting taken / killed was irrelevant and unneeded.

Sophie Yeah I thought that when they mentioned the Inquisition and stuff like that I was like oooh go into that more! But everything about this book just felt incredibly vague.

Andi I also felt the ending was funky. It had some really good ideas but some bland executions.

Z Oh no, I saw this and was intrigued. As someone who loves Rebecca I'm sad.

Andi Rebecca was a lot stronger of a book, this one just kind of took the good bits and failed to deliver. :(
