it was ok

I don’t write reviews.

Dear god, this book was dreadful. I’m not exaggerating. The characters were flat at best and mean at worst. They made me feel depressed. Even more depressing was that they didn’t become shark food.

At first, I was enjoying the story and found it engaging. Then nothing happened. At all. The characters had annoying discussions with each other. Then we have a while away from the shark plot entirely, focusing on the sheriff’s bitch wife. Since I’m a masochist, I finished the book anyhow.

And the “sexy” part was so embarrassing. I tried to tell myself that all sex talk sounds embarrassing if you aren’t part of the conversation, but no. This was bad. The woman asks the man if he’s big. Then he asks her if SHE’s big. This gets them all worked up. Ok, ok I’m done, I’m cringing too much!!

Give me the story you started telling me. Not one about awful people who are shark food. Or sadly not shark food."

Phil Did it make you scared of the water at least?

Lizz Strangely enough I grew up snorkeling in deep ocean as my parents dived. My fears were more about them not coming back up because of faulty regulators and me being stranded with a weirdo boat captain. I was obsessed with the ocean and ocean life. The smells and sounds and feeling right to the marrow of your bones. It’s home. I was the kid who said I’m going to be a marine biologist when I grow up. (I’m not btw lol). I live not far from the ocean now which was always my dream. It makes me feel whole.

Once out on the water south of Key West there were so many barracuda that we were chucking watermelon rinds overboard and you could see their teeth flash as they snapped up the fruit. Yet I wasn’t afraid. My uncle was excited and a bit scared when he saw a couple hammerheads during a night dive. They weren’t nearly as interested in him as he was in them. Plus he wasn’t trying to get them interested so he held his limbs relatively still.

Dennis The people in this book are indeed terrible. But I enjoyed all the parts with the actual shark.

Lizz Same!! The shark parts were quite enjoyable.

John Thank goodness the movie changed the part of the wife.

Lizz I tried the film again after reading. It was ok. I agree it was for the best that they ditched that part.

Nate The sex part was pretty rough. I was listening to it as an audiobook and I was

Nate Laughing out loud during that part, yikes.

Lizz Same Nate, same. I almost spit out my drink.

You are welcome. A rare time when the movie is better than the book by a long shot.

Zain I’ve never read the book, but I’ve seen the movie and I enjoyed it immensely. Lovely review, Lizz!

Lizz Thanks Zain! Stick with the movie in this case

Jennifer Yep, there's a reason this has been dubbed "Peyton Place with a shark." I quite enjoy it but understand why a lot of people wouldn't. It is depressing and says some shitty things about human nature and the divide between rich and poor. The only thing I've ever really disliked about the book is that Ellen doesn't get eaten by the shark.

Lizz I would have loved for Ellen to be shark meat!
