On the outside looking in, this seems like another case of arrogant human vs unassuming nature. Nature usually wins that fight. It did here and in a most tragic way. And yet, in Into the Wild Jon Krakauer does an excellent job of muddying up the waters, so that they flow with the natural fluidity of life itself. Was this kid so very unprepared? Was this a foolhardy and unnecessary death easily avoided with a few, slight precautions? Life is seldom black and white, cut and dry. Krakauer reminds us of that, while telling a riveting story.

Excellent review.

I find it interesting that, as we get older, and collect more experiences, we realize that simple truth more and more (that life is rarely black and white). I think that Chris in his youth, (like mine and probably yours too) and having such strong ideals (while they were honorable to say the least), saw things very black and white with little room for debate in his mind. That impossible moral code he held, to paraphrase the author.

The thought that he DID start to see some grey while on that bus, only to become trapped there, is so unbelievably heart-breaking to me. I am going to have such a hard time shaking this book.

Thank you for that thought reply!

Denis Biju Great review, you touched on some key factors that make Jon Krakauer a renowned author. He took a story that was already told, and made it interesting again.
