Eve, the sole survivor of her family’s murder by a serial killer when she was a young child, has written a true crime book, The Nothing Man, with the intent to catch the killer. Jim, the murderer, now living a quiet life and working as a security guard, reads the book and becomes increasingly infuriated and intent on finishing the job he should have finished 20 years ago.

The chapters from the perspective of Jim alternates with chapters from the book. I don’t always enjoy a book within a book but in this case it worked brilliantly. Reading Jim’s thoughts and responses as he read the book was nothing short of terrifying. I applaud the author for writing a book where the killer is known from the start but the tension and suspense is maintained.

So why only three stars? As I read I kept thinking I knew Jim. Why? Because he was exactly like the GSK (Golden State Killer). I made a checklist as I read and came up with at least 20 similarities that range from his escalating crimes, to the manner in which he executed the crimes, to his job. The GSK is so unique and unusual that the similarities could not possibly be coincidental.

To be fair, the author references in the afterward that she came up for the idea of this book after reading Michelle McNamara’s book, I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer. I think it was more than an "idea" since Jim was nearly indistinguishable from him. I would have liked to have seen more originality. It's a page-turner and very readable but I also found the ending a let-down.

I liked the author's writing style and would definitely read more by her. Perhaps if you have not read Michelle McNamara's book and you know nothing about GSK, you'd appreciate the story more than I did. Just go in knowing Jim is a clone of the GSK.

* I received a digital copy of the book via Edelweiss. All opinions are my own.

Mischenko It’s good that she referenced the book in the end at least. It sounds pretty good, but not one I’ll likely pick up. Excellent review and hope your next one is awesome, Jan! ❤️

Kaceey Excellent review Jan! I can see how reading a GSK Book would take away from this one! Hope you love your next read!💖

Susanne Excellent review Jan! Sorry this was a disappointment! I haven't read I'll be Gone in the Dark or The Nothing Man though I've seen great reviews for both. Yours is the first so so review I've seen for this one but it's also the first one I've seen comparing it to GSK. I think based on that I'd I'll be Gone in the Dark only. Thank you for your candid review!

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ Terrific review, Jan, and I understand your reason for dropping it to 3 stars. It sounds like the author writes well so it's a shame she didn't make an original character.

Thanks Mischenko! If she had not I would have dropped the rating to 2 stars, ha!

Kaceey, I am actually quite shocked that she didn't change more details. It definitely detracted from the book.

Susanne, I'll Be Gone in the Dark was a 5 star read for me and excellent as an audiobook. I highly recommend it. As I was reading The Nothing Man I checked reviews and looked online for others who recognized the unusual similarities, and I seem to be the first 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's a shame because otherwise, it's excellent.

Thanks Jenna, it was a lost opportunity and detracted from what. could have been such a terrific book. But so far, I seem to be the only one who thinks so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Michael David (on hiatus) Great review, Jan! I’m so sorry this was only a 3-star for you! I absolutely loved it, but I didn’t know the story of the GSK...although I have that book in my TBR. :) I hope you love your next read!

Victoria I don't know much about GSK, but I get a little grouchy about derivative work. Exceptional review and thanks for keeping another off of my list. 😉

Lucy Brilliant review Jan! I read “Gone In the Dark” and that was a 5 star read for me. Not sure if I’ll pick this one up now with all of those similarities.

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) Fantastic review, Jan! I didn't realize that this book shared so much in common with the GSK. Sorry it was a letdown. Sounds like I need to read Michelle McNamara's book ASAP. I listened to an interview with Patton Oswalt recently and her book does sound fascinating!

Marialyce Drats! I was so hoping you would have loved this one, Jan! Wonderful review.

Brandice Great review, Jan. I’ve been excited to read this one since I first heard about it early this year. I still haven’t read about the GSK, though I’ve been tempted, so maybe I’ll (continue to) hold off until after I read this one ;)

Holly B (slower pace!) Ending a bit of a let down for me too. I also thought of GSK while reading this. Creepy guy!! haha

Thanks Michael, if I didn't know so much about GSK I would have rated this higher too and wondered how she came up with such evilness in Jim. I hope you get a chance to read McNamara's book soon. It's wonderful.

I was grouchy enough to make my list, haha. It would have been so easy for the author to change the details. And you're welcome 😉

Brandice, good idea to read this before McNamara's book. I think it will make all the difference in your enjoyment. However, I'm still disturbed that she wasn't more original.

Michelle Wonderful review, Jan! This is something I would have definitely read, but it seems odd to me that the author didn't decide to distinguish her killer from that of the GSK. Particularly with how popular Michelle McNamara's book is (and will become thanks to the HBO series)! I guess the publisher figures enough people would be unfamiliar or not care. It would have bothered me too. Thanks for the excellent analysis!

I LOVED this one but I haven't read McNamara's book so I understand your frustration. Great review, Jan!

Richard (on hiatus) Great review Jan ......... interesting to hear of the parallels with the story of the real killer and it’s understandable why you scored it down a little.

Michelle, thanks. I found it very odd too, and while she referenced McNamara's book she gave no explanation why she made the GSK into Jim. Maybe when the book is published there will be more light shed on the why, but to me it felt like she "stole" the story, which rubbed me the wrong way.

Dita, I admit if I didn't have a fascination with true crime and had not read McNamara's book, or wasn't so familiar with the GSK, my rating would have been much higher.

Peter Excellent review, Jan and well spotted with the link to the GSK. Pity the end also let it down. I have this one from NetGalley and was looking forward to it. Hummm. :):)

Paula K Terrific review, Jan!

Jayme I knew it was inspired by that serial killer, but I had not read the GSK book, so I loved this one! Sorry it was a letdown for you!

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader Thanks for this thoughtful review, Jan. I had not seen any comparisons between this one and the GSK, so I appreciate knowing that going in. I still have not read I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, but I’ve watched a few 48 Hours/Dateline type shows on him and probably would recognize a good bit, too.

If you haven't read the book I think you'll be fine! It is a compelling page-turner. It felt like a rip-off and I just couldn't get past the similarities.
