Eve, the sole survivor of her family’s murder by a serial killer when she was a young child, has written a true crime book, The Nothing Man, with the intent to catch the killer. Jim, the murderer, now living a quiet life and working as a security guard, reads the book and becomes increasingly infuriated and intent on finishing the job he should have finished 20 years ago.
The chapters from the perspective of Jim alternates with chapters from the book. I don’t always enjoy a book within a book but in this case it worked brilliantly. Reading Jim’s thoughts and responses as he read the book was nothing short of terrifying. I applaud the author for writing a book where the killer is known from the start but the tension and suspense is maintained.
So why only three stars? As I read I kept thinking I knew Jim. Why? Because he was exactly like the GSK (Golden State Killer). I made a checklist as I read and came up with at least 20 similarities that range from his escalating crimes, to the manner in which he executed the crimes, to his job. The GSK is so unique and unusual that the similarities could not possibly be coincidental.
To be fair, the author references in the afterward that she came up for the idea of this book after reading Michelle McNamara’s book, I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer. I think it was more than an "idea" since Jim was nearly indistinguishable from him. I would have liked to have seen more originality. It's a page-turner and very readable but I also found the ending a let-down.
I liked the author's writing style and would definitely read more by her. Perhaps if you have not read Michelle McNamara's book and you know nothing about GSK, you'd appreciate the story more than I did. Just go in knowing Jim is a clone of the GSK.
* I received a digital copy of the book via Edelweiss. All opinions are my own.

Thanks Mischenko! If she had not I would have dropped the rating to 2 stars, ha!

Kaceey, I am actually quite shocked that she didn't change more details. It definitely detracted from the book.

Susanne, I'll Be Gone in the Dark was a 5 star read for me and excellent as an audiobook. I highly recommend it. As I was reading The Nothing Man I checked reviews and looked online for others who recognized the unusual similarities, and I seem to be the first 🤷🏻♀️ It's a shame because otherwise, it's excellent.

Thanks Jenna, it was a lost opportunity and detracted from what. could have been such a terrific book. But so far, I seem to be the only one who thinks so 🤷🏻♀️

Thanks Michael, if I didn't know so much about GSK I would have rated this higher too and wondered how she came up with such evilness in Jim. I hope you get a chance to read McNamara's book soon. It's wonderful.
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
I was grouchy enough to make my list, haha. It would have been so easy for the author to change the details. And you're welcome 😉
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
Lucy, it was a 5 star for me too. Too bad the author made Jim into the GSK.
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
Thanks Meredith. If I had not read McNamara's book my rating would have been higher for sure. I hope you get a chance to read it soon - it's so good!!

Thanks TQ, what a sweet compliment! You are too kind! 😊💖
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
I would have loved it, if only she didn't rip off GSK! Such a shame because she is a good writer,
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
Brandice, good idea to read this before McNamara's book. I think it will make all the difference in your enjoyment. However, I'm still disturbed that she wasn't more original.

I LOVED this one but I haven't read McNamara's book so I understand your frustration. Great review, Jan!

Michelle, thanks. I found it very odd too, and while she referenced McNamara's book she gave no explanation why she made the GSK into Jim. Maybe when the book is published there will be more light shed on the why, but to me it felt like she "stole" the story, which rubbed me the wrong way.
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
Dita, I admit if I didn't have a fascination with true crime and had not read McNamara's book, or wasn't so familiar with the GSK, my rating would have been much higher.
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
Thanks Richard, it was such a disappointment!
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
Thanks Julie! I do wish the author had chosen to change the details.

Jayme, I'm ok with "inspired by" but this was more than inspired. If I had not read the book about GSK I would have loved it too.
![JanB](https://cdn.statically.io/img/images.gr-assets.com/users/1527313486p1/260116.jpg)
If you haven't read the book I think you'll be fine! It is a compelling page-turner. It felt like a rip-off and I just couldn't get past the similarities.

Absolutely! My review would have been far different had I not seen all the similarities. I know you will love it :)

Thanks Michelle! I would have felt the same as you if I had not known the details of the GSK.
