All aboard the Unpopular Opinion Express! 🚂

Unfortunately, this is NOT the train ride I expected to be taking after reading this book, I am so sad to say.

Jim Doyle is working as so many former law enforcement officers do---in the supermarket security biz. He is going about his mediocre, cookie-cutter day when he notices a book with a title that makes his blood run cold: The Nothing Man. Jim knows the Nothing Man intimately, you see, possibly better than anyone else---since this is HIS alter ego. Brutal serial killings have taken place over the course of many years, but Jim has lived a double life quite neatly...until now. Eve Black, the only surviving member of a family Jim took out, has taken pen to paper to explore the mystery and bring the facts (and her memories) to the masses. As Jim plunges ahead in the narrative, he fears that Eve may know a lot more than he anticipated and his anonymity may be coming to a vicious end. Can he stop the freight train of truth as it barrels ahead through Eve's words...or is strapped to the tracks with no hope of escape?

This book has been hailed as a psychological thriller...but to be honest, I feel like this was in no way a psychological thriller. We know from the beginning that Jim is the killer, and I don't feel the book 'tricked' me or had any sort of twists really aside from a few minor turns of plot. Every standout psychological thriller I've ever read has ticked those boxes, but this one didn't.

I loved the IDEA of a book within a book...but much like I felt reading snippets of Misery in Stephen King's Misery...the idea was fantastic, but the actual reading material was not. I couldn't understand why people would be gripped by Eve's book at all. To me, it was lots of meticulous detail about the other murders etc. that really didn't even matter to the plot itself. Every time we jumped back into Eve's book, I couldn't wait to get back out of it to see what Jim was going to do next, since that was the true driving force of Howard's Nothing Man itself.

This is the sort of book that true crime junkies will probably LOVE, but I suppose I should have researched it a bit more before starting to read, since that is not at all my passion area. I know this is a super hot topic and there are lots of passionate fans out there, but I am just not one of them. I have no idea why those sorts of things don't appeal to me since I am obsessed with thrillers, but my guess is, like police procedurals, they just aren't my cup of tea.

I completely appreciate what Howard accomplished here, but I was absolutely not the right reader for this book. Please take a look at the fabulous glowing five star reviews out there for this book though, and all credit goes to Catherine Ryan Howard for creativity and a unique premise! Hopefully one of her other books will be a better fit for me...and perhaps a train ride to the Land of Many Stars! 🚅

Justin Chen Agree with your review! I also thought it's too much like its reference materials

Thank you Justin! I appreciate her inspiration and attention to detail, but it kept the book from being truly thrilling for me.

JaymeO Terrific review, Catherine! Exactly! It totally annoys me when books are thrown in categories where they don’t belong! Hint, hint Comfort me with Apples!

Thank you Jayme! 🧡 I just don't know what I missed! 🤷‍♀️ I am glad I have a couple thrillers on the horizon where I know exactly what I'll be getting...and hopefully they'll be just as great as I anticipated! I so wish I knew about the Apples at this point, and I am tempted to look up everything at this point so I'll be in on it 😂

Jayme Say what?? 😂 Always appreciate an honest review and hope you love your next!

I know, I know. I'm at a loss! 😂 Blame it on my mom brain, that's what I always do 😉 I have a couple of thrillers on the list to read soon that I am very hopeful I will love, thanks so much Jayme! 💕

Margaret M - (too far behind to catch up although trying to spend more time on GR) I am so looking forward to this one as well as I have heard great reviews. Great honest review Catherine

Michael David (on hiatus) 1) You're wrong. 2) Sounds like you were too generous with your rating. I'm joking about #1. 🤣 I'm so sad you didn't enjoy it more, Catherine, but your review is excellent and very thoughtful. 🤗

Holly B (slower pace!) Honest review Catherine! We can't love them all! Hopefully your next is great.💕🤗

If you enjoy true crime at all Margaret, I'm sure you'll love it! I really hope you do, I'll be watching for your review! 😊

1) You're right-I'm wrong! 🤣🤣 I seriously felt as terrible not loving this as I did when I read Pretty Little Wife. Actual GUILT! 😫 I am so sad I didn't enjoy it the way I'd hoped to either, but I'm not opposed to reading another Howard book and hopefully that will be awesome! Thanks for still being my friend 😂 and for your kind words! 🤗

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - so very behind! Holly wrote: "Honest review Catherine! We can't love them all! Hopefully your next is great.💕🤗"

Absolutely Holly! The world would be pretty boring if we did, and I still don't regret reading it. I hope my next thrillers are fabulous too, thanks much!! 🤗

Virginie Roy Nice honest review, Catherine! It was also a 3.5 for me and I was so disappointed after reading raving reviews. It didn't stand out from the other thrillers for me neither!

Thank you Virginie! 🧡 I was so disappointed too...when my hold came in I figured, October, this is the perfect time to read! I don't think it made a difference for me unfortunately...but luckily my current reads are holding my attention and I have a few spooky ones left for October! 🎃

Virginie Roy I hope your next read is a winner!🤞

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - so very behind! Virginie wrote: "I hope your next read is a winner!🤞"

Thank you much!! 💕 Reading The Ballerinas now (so far so good) and I have Home Before Dark which I've been saving for Halloween so I'm hoping I love that too!

Virginie Roy I'll be watching for your review of Home Before Dark, I'm curious! Happy reading!📚😊

Yes, me too! All I know is it involves ghosts and the song Sixteen Going On Seventeen from Sound of Music, so I am super excited! 😊 Hoping to get to it next week if I can get caught up on my ARCs LOL

Melissa ~ Bantering Books Well, shucks. It definitely sounds like "The Nothing Man" may not have been the best fit for you, Catherine. But I just read another review for it earlier this week, and the person didn't care for it really either. So, it's not just you.

Oh! And fantastic review, too. :)

Yes, it was not what I hoped it would be unfortunately, which is partially my fault and partially nobody's fault. LOL I do think Howard is a solid writer, but this just wasn't what I had hoped it might be. Certain sections really drew me in and flew by though, so I have hope I'll get into her other books. Also nice to hear I wasn't the only one who didn't absolutely love it, since that seems to be the general consensus. And thank you so much, of course! :)

Kat An honest and thoughtful review, Catherine. It's OK to have books that aren't your cup of tea. No guilt allowed! 😉 I hope if you try another book of hers that it's a better fit, and if not, you'll know it's safe to cross her off your list! :)

Thanks so much Kat! 💞 thanks also for telling me it’s okay because the guilt was killing me!! 😣 I do think I might give another one of her books a try at some point, but if it’s a no go, it might be the last. Wouldn’t be the first time, but always like to give a good writer another shot!! 😊📚

Regina I did love this, but - surprise! - I'm also a true crime junkie. Sorry this was a bit of a dud for you. It's been so hyped up here on GR that I imagine your expectations were pretty high.

Kendall Hahaha I love that all aboard the unpopular opinion express. I loved this one but I appreciate your honest review!

Well no surprise you’d love it then…and I’m thrilled you did! :) If I was into the Golden State Killer etc. I probably would have been much more invested but at the end of the day she’s a fellow Catherine, it was my first book of hers, and I’m not sorry I read it-only that I didn’t love it! You’re right about the expectations here on GR but at least no FOMO! ;) xo

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - so very behind! Kendall wrote: "Hahaha I love that all aboard the unpopular opinion express. I loved this one but I appreciate your honest review!"

Thanks so much Kendall! 💞 haha it’s not my favorite train, but I guess I had to take a ride eventually! 😂 happy to hear you loved it though, I’m hoping one of her other books will be a better fit for me!

Allison Faught I am literally the WORST person in the world for not reading about a book before going into it so I understand how that feels when expectations don’t meet reality. 😩 Sorry this one wasn’t a better fit! 💕

Melissa (Trying to Catch Up) You make some very good points and it's totally fine to have a different opinion than others. I find myself on that train quite often.

Canadian Jen Tis a shame! I have this in my list but am in no hurry. Great and fair review!

Okay, THANK YOU Allison I am so glad I'm not alone!! 💕Especially when the book friends I trust the most ALL love it, I pretty much assume I'm going to love it too...which is a little bit lazy on my part, and I probably should investigate the plot too from time to time! 🤣 It wasn't the right book for me, but the fact there were parts I flew through gives me hope that one of her other books might be a win! 📚

Thank you Melissa! I know it's okay, I just always feel terrible, especially if I feel like it's me and not the book itself, but I know sometimes those can be helpful reviews to read before making a decision too, so there is a flip side. I'll save room on the train for you, although hopefully you won't need it! 😊

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - so very behind! Jen wrote: "Tis a shame! I have this in my list but am in no hurry. Great and fair review!"

Twas indeed Jen! 💜 I am certainly one of very few who didn't love this one, so I hope you enjoy it more when you get to check it out!

Derek (I'M BACKKKK!) Great comments on distinguishing enjoyment of this between true crime fans and psychological thriller fans only. Sorry this one didn't fully work for you! Great, honest review though, Catherine!

Thanks so much, Derek! I wanted to be very clear about that because that was the lens I was using while reading and I think that's part of why I was so disappointed. I am still jonesing for my next unreliable narrator psychological thriller, but I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer! 😏

Cynthia I’m not particularly into true crime either, but love thrillers. And, like you, I was an outlier on this one.

Emily Peery “Every time we jumped back into Eve’s book, I couldn’t wait to get back out.” - same here! This was my main issue. I felt like there was a lot of summarizing and repeating of info. I just wanted to see what was going to happen. Great review!

Wasn’t it frustrating? I was SO invested in the other storyline that I felt like we never got to focus on it long enough! Glad I wasn’t alone, thanks for your comment Emily! 💙

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) Hi Catherine, thanks for the add and message :).
Agreed!! This one wasn't for me either. I wasn't a fan of the format.

Of course Joanna! :) it was definitely not a good fit for me at all. Far too much of the true crime angle, and not enough of the main plot with the Nothing Man! I’m glad I wasn’t alone on the Outlier Express! LOL 🚂

Joanna Chu (The ChuseyReader) I find myself in the minority too often so I'm always glad to find someone else who thinks the same hahaha.
