This is...The Beginning of Everything

It's truly hard to judge and rate this story because it's...The Beginning of Everything. Unlike other stories by Kristen Ashley, she has decided to run simultaneous love stories. With so many couples meeting and connecting, it means that we don't get even close to a *Happy Ever After*. It is The Beginning of Everything...

While I hated certain parts, was at times confused, and struggled following who was who and what was what, I was completely SUCKED IN!! My emotions were high from the very start and I welcomed the loathing that overwhelmed me at the very beginning. After all, I had been here before. I recognised my feeling of outrage and disgust. I was giddy because it reminded me of my journies through Fantasyland.

I will not be judging The Rising from my introduction to The Beginning of Everything but I will give it 5 stars because of the journey the emotions I felt. This story made me extremely angry at times, had me smiling like a loon at others, and I was constantly wearing a frown in concentration. I had to remind myself that this is not my love story and it IS unreal. These stories are about other people and their lives, so I can hardly judge them on their decisions and sexual proclivities.

Even when I was overwhelmed and upset towards the end, it duplicated the emotional devastation I felt when I read The Golden Dynasty for the first time. I reminded myself that we are nowhere near the end, and if my Dax Lahn can come good, there's hope for The Rising. I admit that the ending left me a little wild-eyed. So much is going on and I'm a little discombobulated. I NEED to know what's going to happen next and I can't wait for more.

For fans of the Fantasyland series, this will seem a little like returning to visit with old friends (and enemies). There are a few scenes that will push some readers too far and while some left me uncomfortable, I was able to get past them. The narrators do an AMAZING job and by the end, I found it easier to follow along because of the different narrators.

I can't wait to see how...The Plan Commences plays out.

I wasn't expecting it, to be honest.

A K Great review! I saw that you said you can’t wait for the next book? Did this end in a total cliffhanger? And any ideas for how many books in the series?

Thanks. The story is far from finished and there was stuff that happened at the end which leaves you on the edge of your seat, but it's a continuing series, so I expected it.

It looks like four books from what I've seen. :-)

deecee Felt much the same Stacey - I expect my review to change as I listen to the rest of the series but it definitely has me wanting to listen to the next one so that earns stars In my book 🙂

Exactly, I guessed very early in that it was going to be done differently to Fantasyland so I knew I wouldn't be able to judge from this instalment. I'm just hoping there will be a few attitude adjustments before we get to the end. ;-)

Angela (Reading Frenzy Book Blog) Excellent review, Stacey. When I saw the number of narrators and characters I was afraid the story would be too complicated to follow. I’m still on the fence.

Thanks, Angela. To be honest, while I really enjoyed the series, I'm not sure I would recommend the audio as an intro. The last book in the series my review explained it a bit better -

Fantasyland - OR - The Rising? - Did I prefer one over the other? Did it work better reading or listening first? Should it have been one couple per instalment or journey to the end as a team?

It’s not a question of if I liked one over the other storyline/character-wise, more about how it was presented. While I absolutely love listening to audiobooks, I feel you somewhat lose the impact of a truly good story while listening. A slight distraction can have you missing key information. If you’re not careful, you could miss that you’ve skimmed over a key plot point. When a narrator changes character without the listener knowing, it can become confusing as to who said what and did what. I guess my feelings are that a ‘read’ tells the story and a listen will enhance an already awesome story.

Hope that helps a bit. I go into it a bit more but I don't want to share the whole review because it does talk a bit about the series.

Hope you and yours are well. :-)

I'm scared to say do it, to be honest.

While my experience was good, it was definitely hampered because I listened instead of reading it. There was so much going on and with a lot of characters, it was hard to keep track of everything. I think reading it first would have been ideal.

If you do try, good luck...and may the force be with you. ;-)

I feel like it would still be an advantage to read it. There are some characters that I think you will really like, though. It would be interesting to see if they have the same impact reading as to listening. Scottish brogue was vera vera nice. ;-)

I love audio. My very, very favourite was Making Faces by Amy Harmon. The narrator was amazing. I really loved Fantasyland series on audio too.
