The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

A lot of women and non-binary folks read this book, so I want to say this:
This book was written by a white man who hurt women (and who knows who else) and is simply regurgitating the wisdom of Black women and women of color who have not only been through the trauma he speaks of, but who also have been saying these things and operating in trauma healing far before this yahoo put his stolen thoughts down.
Knowing the reason folks are most likely reading this book and how he made people feel violated in chauvinistic ways is more disturbing than the heavy contents itself.
UPDATE: in replacement, I HIGHLY SUGGEST “Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto” by Tricia Hersey, “What My Bone’s Know” by Stephanie Foo, The Body Is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor plus the accompanying work book, and Who is Wellness For by Fariha Róisín (I also have a shelf that I am constantly adding books to in case you need more!)

@Donna hi lovely! If you see this I’ve added more book recs on this review and also have a shelf on my GR profile I’m adding to:)
@V absolutely my PLEASURE!! If folks need to read it, I absolutely understand. However there’s so so much better out there🥰🖤
Audre Lord is amazing! And so is Kimberle Crenshaw!
This is good to know. Another case of a white man profiting off black womens trauma

It scares me that people like him are out there pretending to be like normal people and then you find out crap like this
@caroline I don’t remember if he talks about it in this book since it’s been awhile but I would not be surprised if you were right
I'm so confused by this review. How did he hurt women? I just received this book and would love a source. Also how are his thoughts stolen? He is a professor.
Hi @Hanna - I tried to post an article from The Boston Globe as a source for you just now but GR will not allow the posting of outside links from the app for me. I also wanted to mention that in the time it took you to write this comment, you could’ve made a google search that pulled up many sources - and you still can! Good luck in your research and healing 🖤
Thank you SO much for this review. I literally got to page 40 and my skin was crawling. I couldn’t figure out why. His narcissistic name dropping and know it all condescension scream WHITE MAN. The fact that he knew everything and was smarter than everyone even as a “lowly intern” and his self distancing from those who (he watched) experimenting on animals and re-traumatizing people was ridiculous. Thank you for the book recommendations. I will read those!
@Hali hi lovely!! My pleasure. This man gets so much good attention and he is atrocious:(( if you have any recs I’d love to hear yours as well! Sending love on your journey 🤟🏻🖤
Thank you for the book recommendations. I DNFed this book at 30 pages in and after skimming some of the other chapters. Gross.
I will read the ones on your list instead

@Ave I would never want to discourage you from anything that may help along your healing journey and I’m glad you saw it just so you have a heads up. If you read it I would love to know your thoughts after💕

Damn I'm glad I came across this thread, I started this book yesterday morning and was instantly getting the ick when he describes Tom and nonchalantly talks about Tom murdering villagers, kids and raping a woman in response to Tom's own trauma. I read a bit more this morning and he was describing a hot female patient while also talking about her incest experience and just, yuck. Now seeing there's gonna possibly be more of this and animal stuff I'm out! Thanks for saving me from reading further.

@Mindy i’m so sorry you had to read that trash. it’s so sick:( you are most welcome, love! 🖤🖤 blessings on your healing journey!
Wow… I’ve been meaning to read this book for ages, thought it would help me with all the tension in my everything. Glad I saw your review before I started. I’m easily triggered by sexism, covert and overt. And I’m especially vulnerable while reading this kind of literature. So that would have been a train crash. So thanks for the heads up, and the recommendations.
@Mia of course, darling! i am especially vulnerable while reading this type of literature as well. it feels like a double sucker punch! blessings on your healing journey 🥰
@Vivacious oof my pleasure, lovely! i hope you find some other books that are way better. blessings on your healing journey 🖤🥰
youre comment makes it seem that you feel only blacks and browns know trauma and are the only ones who can enlighten society in this matter.
why does race or gender have to compete ? I would simply say that noone knows what anyone has truly gone through no matter what color or gender they are.

i’ve tried blocking the above comment for its ignorance but i can’t take it down. if anyone has any advise! gotta swat the mosquitos 🦟
wow i’m so glad i read this review before getting it, thank you for sharing!! and will def try one of the recs 🤍🤍
I’d argue the entire purpose of this book was to compile knowledge of trauma and therapy from Kolk’s experience into one binder. He has clearly gained this knowledge from his own experiences (which he details exactly where and how through medical training at university and beyond).
I’ve been seeing the comment on this thread that the idea of having trauma survivors relive their experiences is re-traumatizing them, which could be true for some people, but it seems to help others. The content is VERY heavy, but that’s the point!
Maybe there are some ideas/techniques that aren’t his which is obviously unfair, but it isn’t fair to say that as a result, specifically women and non binary people should stay away from this book..
How exactly has he hurt women, besides accidentally through therapy techniques? Does he have a harmful history we should know about?

@Bella - there’s no need to argue or debate. a simple google search will bring up the information you require. there are plenty reviews praising this oaf and i think you’ll certainly find the review you’re looking for to comfort you in one of those. good luck on your healing journey.
