** spoiler alert **
*i received an ARC of this novel through a Goodreads giveaway. which i suppose means final text is still subject to change but i wouldn't get my hopes up.
what a dreadful waste of words. i guess i'm glad the middle of the novel so sedated me in its banality that the utterly cheap 9/11 conclusion was merely offensive rather than absolutely enraging.
moshfegh is clearly a talented writer, and her entertaining wit sneaks through in moments throughout the novel. one only hopes that she will one day free her talents from the shackles of stereotypical MFA melodrama.

honestly, the reason i didn't spoiler alert the 9/11 element is that it's not at all relevant to the overall plot, and i'd have written it out as a trigger warning anyway.
Completely agree - this was one of the worst books I've ever read in my life for all of the reasons you mentioned.
This was a lousy book. The main character had no name but it could have just been 'contempt."
Author tried much too hard to be shocking and oh-so-hip in this attempt at satire.

Cara, completely agree. When I read the ending I wanted to throw the book across the room. Was intrigued at the beginning but half way through it got a little boring for me then the ending, ugh. Glad I’m not the only one who felt as I.
"I guess i'm glad the middle of the novel so sedated me in its banality that the utterly cheap 9/11 conclusion was merely offensive rather than absolutely enraging." YES THANK YOU.
wow lol, i got spoiler-tagged for this review despite the fact that the review is like 15 words long (and does not address any significant plot elements of the novel)...
In my copy, the blurb mentions 9/11 anyway, so not exactly sure what "spoiler" bomb you've let drop!
How was the 9/11 ending cheap/offensive? It was very clearly building to that throughout the book. I didn’t like the ending broadly but it was pretty obvious it was building to 9/11.
