did not like it

** spoiler alert ** *i received an ARC of this novel through a Goodreads giveaway. which i suppose means final text is still subject to change but i wouldn't get my hopes up.

what a dreadful waste of words. i guess i'm glad the middle of the novel so sedated me in its banality that the utterly cheap 9/11 conclusion was merely offensive rather than absolutely enraging.

moshfegh is clearly a talented writer, and her entertaining wit sneaks through in moments throughout the novel. one only hopes that she will one day free her talents from the shackles of stereotypical MFA melodrama.

Angel Hench yes, this

Janet M I'm afraid I'll have to agree.

Karli I can't believe I wasted time finishing this. Absolutely dreadful book.

Nikki (Saturday Nite Reader) That ending angered me too.

Ashley A cheap 9/11 conclusion is the perfect wording for his. Wtf was that all about?

Sleeping with books Spoiler alert this comment please

message 7: by CM (new) - rated it 1 star

CM honestly, the reason i didn't spoiler alert the 9/11 element is that it's not at all relevant to the overall plot, and i'd have written it out as a trigger warning anyway.

Shanna Completely agree - this was one of the worst books I've ever read in my life for all of the reasons you mentioned.

Kaitlyn Yes exactly the ending squandered everything else

message 10: by Ginny (new) - rated it 1 star

Ginny This was a lousy book. The main character had no name but it could have just been 'contempt."
Author tried much too hard to be shocking and oh-so-hip in this attempt at satire.

message 11: by Ana (new)

Ana Kennedy Cara, completely agree. When I read the ending I wanted to throw the book across the room. Was intrigued at the beginning but half way through it got a little boring for me then the ending, ugh. Glad I’m not the only one who felt as I.

Ginny My worst book of the year 2018.

BlooBella My worst book as well. Wasted my time

Maggie Glass "I guess i'm glad the middle of the novel so sedated me in its banality that the utterly cheap 9/11 conclusion was merely offensive rather than absolutely enraging." YES THANK YOU.

message 15: by Gail (new) - rated it 1 star

Gail And grow up. Who, past the age of twenty something, could relate to this.

message 16: by CM (new) - rated it 1 star

CM wow lol, i got spoiler-tagged for this review despite the fact that the review is like 15 words long (and does not address any significant plot elements of the novel)...

Angela I just don't get why this book was supposed to be so great. It wasn't.

Paola S I totally agree

Maureen In my copy, the blurb mentions 9/11 anyway, so not exactly sure what "spoiler" bomb you've let drop!

message 20: by Joana (new)

Joana What a boomer thing to say

message 21: by Pam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pam G How is 9/11 happening a shock to you it literally tells you the date almost every 10 pages lol

Michelé Spot on.

message 23: by Nat (new) - rated it 1 star

Nat Is the writer talented though? I found the whole thing lazy and uninspired.

Holly How was the 9/11 ending cheap/offensive? It was very clearly building to that throughout the book. I didn’t like the ending broadly but it was pretty obvious it was building to 9/11.

message 25: by nini (new) - rated it 2 stars

nini i agree, i knew it was building up to 9/11 so i thought maybe that event would like bring her back to reality and make her value her life and change her perspective on things, but no. it did feel offensive as well
