did not like it

I appreciated what the author was trying to do in the book, and some of the interactions and scenarios were mildly interesting in a broader perspective, but I was overall not captured by this book. Perhaps I am not the target audience for this book – it is a young adult book and while this doesn’t disqualify it from being a worthwhile read, it would be unrealistic to ignore this fact. Perhaps this book was not what I wanted (knowingly or not) to read at the time - if I wanted a much deeper book with more complex (and gritter?) characters, more complex writing, or a more mature tone, this book wouldn’t satisfy.

Whatever the reason, this book wasn’t for me.

However, I do want to comment on the nature of book recommendations. Receiving and giving book recommendations are something really nice, not to mention a good form of bonding and social cohesion. I was recommended this book by some very valued friends. Just because this one recommendation didn’t work out doesn’t mean I’ll stop listening to their opinions and advice (on books or anything else). I think this may be the first book they recommended me, and this experience can be better thought of as one data point for any future recommendations. If perhaps many continual recommendations keep regularly not satisfying, I may need to reconsider how much weight to place on future recommendations, but this is something to worry about for the future.

David Nice review, Ernest. I also liked the insights on the nature of being recommended to.

To complement those musings, I'll add some thoughts on the nature of making recommendations. People make recommendations for different reasons.

I think in this case, the outstanding reasons for the recommendation were 1. It's by an Australian author; and 2. it's different from a lot of other stuff in the market (YA/fantasy). Remembering back to the vague mists of yesteryear (pre-goodreads logging) when I read the series, I think I enjoyed it (3 stars???). But that wasn't the primary or even secondary reason for the recommendation - there are heaps of books ahead of it in the list of 'books we've enjoyed'.

That aside, thanks for reading! I always add explicit recommendations to my 'to read' list and really get a kick out of people reading my recommendations as well. Definitely agree with your sentiments about recommendations in general. And would add that even for recommendations I haven't enjoyed, I still feel like I've got to know someone better :)

Ernest Definitely agree, David :)
