J.D Vance's grandparents set the basis for this life story. They move from the hills of Kentucky to Ohio chasing a better life. J.D.'s life is in both places. He does live a life that is very familiar here in the southeast. His real dad gives him up, he is told by his mom and Mamaw that his dad doesn't want him anymore. He is adopted by one of his mother's many men. Who also ends up leaving. J.D.'s mom is a revolving door of different men. (I'm not judging her as I see this lifestyle taking place around me daily.)

She does manage to end up with nursing degree but then drugs move into her life and she loses even that. Mamaw and Papaw are the saving graces in this man's life. They fought tooth and nail early in their marriage and ended up living at different places and visiting each other during the day. BUT they did install some confidence in this boy.
This seems to be typical in this area. My Gran also took me in from a bad homelife and she was as rowdy as Mamaw is in this book. Once when I took her grocery shopping she pulled out her gun and flopped it on the counter and about gave the clerk a heart attack. She didn't cuss as much as Mamaw did but I may just have glossed over that memory.

The book is also pretty political, pointing out that most people from this area used to vote Democratic with a vengeance but things they have changed. He takes a look at whether it was President Obama's demeanor that turned average poor southerner's against him.
Barack Obama strikes at the heart of our deepest insecurities. He is a good father while many of us aren’t. He wears suits to his job while we wear overalls, if we’re lucky enough to have a job at all. His wife tells us that we shouldn’t be feeding our children certain foods, and we hate her for it—not because we think she’s wrong but because we know she’s right.

This does strike a cord with me because I've seen the millions upon millions of facebook posts that my friends and family have posted.
Is that why we now have Trump coming into office? He was more approachable to the middle and lower class than Hillary? I remember everyone loving Bill Clinton, but truthfully he was more approachable than his wife was.
Who knows? I'm not about to get into a political post. I just observe and do my own thing. Cuz I had a Gran that did teach me to be my own person also.

This book did tend to make me think, I laughed with him when Mamaw would blurt out her opinion and I even teared up several times. The reasoning for my rating falls for some of the back patting he did. I got bored as shit in those parts.
He does admit to having lots of help on his climb out of bad circumstances to go on to the Marines and Yale Law. So I'll give him props for that.

Joy I'm reading this too. How do you like it?

I only got as far as the prologue last night and I forgot it at home. So I'm still not sure. Everyone is all over the place on the ratings of it.

Wendy'sThoughts Interesting and thoughtful review :DDD

Esil I love your review Shelby. This book seems to be striking different chords with different people. I just got an audio version.

Diane Barnes I loved Mamaw! Another reviewer described her as being low-class because of her language, and it really pissed me off. He completely disregarded her good heart and love for her family. Everybody needs a Mamaw in their lives.

It does. I will say that it gives you so much to think about. It touches on so many things and is such a small book that might be what was my only problems with it. I wanted more of some of the topics he discusses.

I'll probably troll that review if I see it..and I never do that. I LOVED her. I wish she was mine.

A kind and good heart beats out proper grammar any day. I am surrounded by uber articulate people on a daily basis. Most of them are absolutely ghastly and mean.

Deanna "I am surrounded by uber articulate people on a daily basis. Most of them are absolutely ghastly and mean."

That's so true in many cases...why is that?
I have terrible grammar (and spelling, punctuation, and more!! )

Great review, MB <3

Thank you my darling!

Kelly (and the Book Boar) I might have to read this. Mebbe. Some day.

Mamaw is totally worth the read. She is me in a few years. Or tomorrow. Cussing and whipping out her gun when people piss her off. Total win.

Matthew Goodreads apparently made you disappear from my radar! :(

Fantastic lovely review! I've seen this book blossoming everywhere I go that showcases books and I'm curious about reading it but I don't think this is my cup of tea.

I love stories about overcoming depression or horrific events in ones childhood but I don't believe I could connect to the author and the small town. I've only realized how divided this country has become in the last 4 years. I know the great divide has been stirring up since Obama entered office and I'm not blaming one party or the other because it was both sides that caused this riff but within the last 4 years I've seen this anger blossomed and I am heartbroken over the results of the election because I thought I understood the American people but clearly I'm living in a bubble.

Living in Miami is a completely different world. We are the melting pot of Latin culture so it's a bit difficult relating to most states in the U.S.

I loved how you added your personal life into this review and I am glad that you had someone in your life who was able to pull you out of hard times. I've met people in my upbringing where clearly the parents didn't want to have kids and saw that infliction reflected to the child and it's heartbreaking to witness that sadness and especially a parent abandoning their child and falling into drugs is one of the deepest lows a child can suffer. These type of books I have to mentally prepare myself because if I'm in a jolly mood and randomly pick this book up I will be in grouchy mood until I finish the book. Great review as always!! :D

I'm totally wanting to hug you.
And you are so right! Both sides of the whole political bull are to blame. Neither side can behave and it's sad.

Christy Hammer Excellent review! You definitely hit some high spots I missed. Thanks! Even though he "forgave" his mother enough to help her again, hatred towards her continued to simmer just under the surface (along with the denial of race relations in that area of the midwest, IMHO). He'd try to poke gentle fun at her instead of saying "that whore"! but we all know how humor can mask emotion and sad all around that's what he surely thought of her.

Zombieslayer⚡Alienhunter I really like this review, thoughtful and straightforward.
I think you may have sold me on this one, ma'am.

69th holy moly..Dr. Crazy loaned me his copy or I would send it to you.
I need to find North and South..because same reasons. LOL
PS> Don't one star Serena or you will get cut. I four starred it and 2.0 trolled me trying to get me to raise it to a five.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) I'm gonna 1 Star it just to make Ron cry : )

That's the best reason to ever one star a book in the history of the universe.

Christy Hammer So happy to see trains-flying-monkeys sniffing around my reviews recently! :-) So, I think Vance was right and noting something important in his NYT op-ed this week https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/16/op... and I’m grateful he’s working on the opioid problem back in Ohio (and maybe do something sensible with Kasich) .Here is another harsher criticism this week from a young African-American scholar (who I'd met when he was an undergrad at lily white Univ of New Hampshire) who interestingly, seems to speak up well for poor Whites here: http://www.salon.com/2017/03/11/hillb...

Margitte Great thoughts, Shelby. This book spurred some serious conversations on, for sure.

Vickie Sonderman My goodness. The quantity of books you have read is mind blowing! I too love this particular genre and have been seeking out books that tell ‘their’ story. My parents’ roots are in Eastern Kentucky and as I came to be an adult, I grew to appreciate just about everything from their way of life while growing up. Hillbilly Elegy was an amazing book to me; my mother and my oldest son had the relationship J.D. Vance and his Mamaw shared.
Thank you for your honest reviews. I have definitely chuckled some tonight, reading your take on the books you have read. I plan on following you and checking out a few more of your reviews.

So happy to read your comment here. I loved Mamaw and the whole setup. She was such an amazing person. I still think about this book. It touched me to the core.
