it was amazing
bookshelves: audio, non-fiction

This just won The Pulitzer! Yay! "Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City" is probably the most important book that I have ever read!!! If you are to read one non-fiction book this year it should probably be this book!!! This should be required reading in high school! I learned about poverty and poor renters, the eviction process, and scumbag landlords.

This book is about 8 families in Milwaukee. These are both Caucasian and African American families. The book is broken down into 3 parts. They are real life stories. These stories are so unbelievable that they read like fiction. I cannot do this book justice. The reason I read it was because of my friend Shelby. She wrote a phenomenal review. Here it is. Please check it out:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

Many of these families were spending up to 80 percent of their income just on rent! This left little money for anything else. The system was meant for families to spend up to 30 percent of their income on rent. It's truly unbelievable and eye opening!

I listened to the audio version. I would say the narration is about 4 Stars. I wish there were two narrators instead of one. The different voices all started sounding the same after awhile. In all fairness, this is a tough book for a narrator to tackle and when he was telling the story and not doing the individual voices he did a great job.

The one character I identified with the most was Scott. I think it's because he made me realize this could happen to me. Scott was making 80k a year as a nurse at one point but became addicted to pain killers and then his life spirals down from there into harder drugs and homelessness. Although there is hope for him, I'm not giving spoilers so you are going to have to read the book to find out what happens to him. His story made me realize this could happen to anybody! Even if you have never been part of the welfare system you can still end up homeless.

This is not a happy book but it is a very important one!!! The author is Sociologist, Matthew Desmond, and he is an amazing person, too. Please read this book and tell your friends about it. There needs to be changes made to the welfare system in the United States. People should not be living in filth and squalor like this with little chance of moving up. Children should not be shuffled around from school to school, either. The author suggests a universal housing voucher program made cost efficient. We need change in the United States and we need it now!

Thanks, Debra! I don't know if I can write a review that can do this book justice but I will try. I agree about non-fiction and audio although I listen to both fiction and non-fiction on audio. This book's main narration is awesome but I wish they had gotten a second narrator. A lot of the voices of the characters sound similar, but don't get me wrong, it's still good narration and worth the listen!

debra I am always about fiction-listen to mostly fiction. The only way non-fiction has a shot with me is audio.

I can see that with non-fiction. I tried to read Unbroken and I just hated it. I probably should have tried the audio because I liked the movie!

Esil Great review Jennifer. This one is coming up soon for me on audio. In Canada too we don't pay enough attention to the concept of housing as a right.

Angela M is taking a little summer break Thanks for your thoughtful review, Jennifer.

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* Great review! This book is just amazing. (Thanks for the shout-out)...the author does an amazing job doesn't he? He made me even see things from the people I didn't care for points of view.

Thank you so much, Esil! I didn't know there was a problem with housing in Canada, too. I can't wait for your thoughts on this book! :)

Thank you so much, Shelby! No problem about the shout out. I'm so glad you read this book. I never would have picked it up if it weren't for your review. The author does an unbelievable job! I can't believe he lived with the people. I felt for the people I didn't care for points of view, too. It was hard not to. Last night I googled him. There is a ton of info and pics on him. I hope they make this into a movie! :). <3

I would love to see the author in it, too! I didn't even think of that. I had water come out my eyes, too! Lol! I had a lot of rage, too. Tobin and Sherrena made me so mad, especially when Sherrena comes back from gambling to find one of her places on fire and thinks it's a good thing because of the insurance money! OMG! :(

Lol! I know right! Her husband would piss me off, too. I think she wore the pants in that relationship. I can't believe a former school teacher would act the way she did with children involved. SMH!

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* He was a total turd-head. Like when he went and put on "hoodie" scene. Nope. Didn't like him at all either.
At the beginning when she bought Arlene some groceries I thought she might have some heart...but it was sorta like leverage that she could throw back in her face.

Yeah I don't think either one of them had a heart. Their vacation to Jamaica I think it was, too. I think they timed it so it wouldn't interfere with eviction time. It was never ending with those two!
