✅Reread 2022 to try to complete series! (I need to get the awesome audio too) 4.5 Stars

 :

I was so worried that I wouldn't understand a thing in this book. I will admit there are some things that went over my head but for the most part I figured it out.

I remember a billion and 65 years ago I watched the movie and was like what the? Basically all I remember is Sting and sandworms. I would love to watch it again and see if I understand it more after reading the book.

I'm still not sure what all the spices were about on Arrakis. I keep thinking it's like their farming like we would farm corn or tobacco, etc. I could be wrong and I didn't get the connection between the spice and the sandworms. Is it like a drug to them? I did read in the back of the book that is was like a drug when taken in small quantities and really addictive when taken in large quantities and that Muad'Did felt his prophesies were because of the spice.

I liked Duke Leto and I hated that he was betrayed not long after they got to Arrakis. There is always some twat out there causing trouble.

I really enjoyed Paul's character and his mother Jessica. They seemed like really strong people and adapted very well in everything they were put through. I didn't really pay too much attention to the other characters or I guess I should say I didn't have many thoughts about them. With the exception of the ones that betrayed them.

I really enjoyed when Paul and Jessica had to travel to get away from the evil Baron Harkonnen before they were killed too. I don't know why, but I enjoyed their little journey. I think they were both great in their roles when they were found by the Freman and showed they were a force to be reckoned with. Now maybe I'm getting this all wrong but I'm trying to tell it through the way I saw it in my mind.

I don't understand how Paul's sister, Alia, was an abomination. That one must have went over my head too. It might have had something to do with the poison Jessica took to become the Reverend Mother. I'm not sure but I know some of my goodreads friends that read this will get me sorted out =)

Other than the sandworms and traitorous people on Arrakis, I was most freaked out by the thought of the water issue! I would NOT was to live somewhere there was a water shortage. And the part where they were talking about selling foot water, I can't even. Which basically means your stinky foot sweat!

Anyhoo, I really loved the book!

Hope you enjoy.

I liked Dune and Dune Messiah. I struggled with Children of Dune and then quit reading somewhere in Heretics of Dune. The sequels became progressively weirder and less interesting.

Mr. Herbert's son and Kevin Anderson wrote several pre-quels and a couple of sequels that are a lot more accessible.

Dune is a biennial read for me.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin I keep hearing that from different people. I love what I have read so far! I haven't updated because unfortunately I have hit a reading slump. :-(

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Aaaaargh!

The slump.

That hit me while reading Marissa Meyer's "Winter" last week. Too loooong...I also have my head in too many different books right now.

I'm committed to reading a chapter in Harry Potter every day with my younger son, but other than that, I think I'm going to do like you mentioned...

Curl up with "Morning Star" and read.

Part of the problem for me is Goodreads. I'm always trying to think of something clever to say in the forthcoming review (that nobody reads), and spend too much time trying to figure out how I feel about the book instead of simply enjoying it. I am not meant to be a critic or an artist...just someone who enjoys art.

"Dune" is amazing.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Everything you just said!!! Omg!! I'm just tired of reading and reviewing and trying to figure out what to say. And I'm reading on a few really good books right now but I'm stuck and want nothing to do with it.

I'm trying to watch some British shows on Amazon Prime and movies and stuff on Netflix. I'm missing my books but I'm just stressed about it all and I want the fun to come back :-(

I'm glad your reading Harry with your son though :-)

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Sometimes, we have to change the medium of our entertainment/information. I no longer have the attention span for TV shows and movies. YouTube!!!

I think that after I finish my 2016 Challenge (I'm a bit retentive about finishing something that I start), Goodreads and I may go on an extended hiatus. I had a different way of tracking my books, but my wife said I should do Goodreads.

I have read a couple of books that I absolutely loved and would have never read if not for recommendations from Goodreads friends.

I have to read Harry Potter. I've never read it before. This was as good an excuse as any. My son and I enjoy the time together, and we need that. We have a hard time connecting.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin I love all of the books I have found from friends through goodreads!

I love good reads and my shows. I'm just stuck in the slump.

I'm glad you and your son can connect through Harry! That's really great :-)

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

That's a more positive way to put it. I have enjoyed every book recommended to me on Goodreads, but that's only been a couple.

I think I'm at my year point on Goodreads, but I didn't do anything social on the site until April. That was very limited.

I'm trying to be more "outgoing" by barging uninvited on to threads about books/series I like ("Empire of Storms"...ahem...sorry about the barging), but that's not my comfort zone. I think I only saw your "Empire of Storms" status because Trish liked it.

Hope you find your way out of the slump (If not, I may get to "Empire" before you), and that the shows are as good as you anticipate.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Thanks, Dave.

I really want to get to my Empire of Storms because it's one of my favorite series but I have only read two chapters. And a few chapters on other books. Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I hope I can read a little when I lay down but I don't want to push and stress myself.

Goodreads is very enjoyable if your social so get on into it when you feel more comfortable :-).

And I don't mind talking to anyone that's nice and barges into my conversations. Lol

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Omg!!! I just saw your from Knoxville!!! I was born in Lake City and all of my family but parents live in LaFollette, Jacksboro and Knoxville!!!

Freaking small world :-D

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not really "from" Knoxville, but I've lived here for 15 years. I'm from out West.

After dragging my wife all over the United States, She wanted to live in the South (she's from Mississippi), so Tennessee it was. There were reasons for Knoxville that I won't post publicly, but may or may not have something to do with me wanting to worship the Sunsphere. :)

I love Knoxville other than a couple of weeks in April and October when allergies are insufferable.

So you're a fan of Lake Norris?

It is a small world. (We don't need to sing that song, do we? Ugh!)

Thank you for the friend quest. Someday, I'll make my momma proud, and be the social belle of the ball.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Before I became home bound me and my dog and folks would stay in cabins at Norris Lake. But we mostly did hints here in Chattanooga. Hiking up at Ocoee in the Cherokee Forest, hiking The Chickamauga Battlefield in GA which is only 20 mins from the house and hiking and picnicking at Red Clay State Park.

We spent more time up in LaFollette staying with my grandparents on the farm.

Anyhoo, I think I'm going to spend a quiet day off here today. I'm trying to keep up with all replies but I still need a break for a bit.

:-/

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm a sorta social media camel...I can go days without replies. Like probably most everybody, I enjoy engaging with someone and sharing opinions and experiences, but I'm not hurt if it doesn't happen. I understand the difference in demands on time when one has a thousand friends, and one has a dozen friends. I'm not sure how you keep up.

The Ocoee area is beautiful, but I've never hiked it. We raft the Ocoee every year, and every few years, we canoe on the Hiawassee when TVA is spilling or generating. (Have you ever been at the dam when they've started up the turbines?)

Two years ago, we biked all over Chickamauga. We tried to go in order of the skirmishes at the creeks, and then the main battles along the road and the retreat up the hill. Hard to imagine that a violent, bloody battle took place there.

We spend most of our time hiking in the Smokies. 100-year anniversary this year for the NPS, and they have an award for hiking 100-miles in the park. We're going to fall about 70 miles short. :) I have a couple of (what I think are) cool photos of a hike in the Black Mountains.

Sorry that you're home bound , and have lost (hopefully, only for a time) doing something you clearly loved.

Enjoy your day way. "Dune", if you want something "heavy"; "Empire", I imagine, is a bit "lighter" and faster moving

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Yeah, mom and dad still go to Gatlinburg. They are there now. I don't care for hiking there as they don't want you taking your dog and all the places I mentioned are down from my house.

I have seen the water come down when they open the damn for the rafting. I have canoed with my canoe in the Ocoee River where all of the boats put it. I have camped up there. But the Battlefield is where me and my dog and dad hiked most weekdays. Always on the horse riding trails so we could meet the horse plus they were hills and we loved the hills. Did a little bit of biking but not much because I liked being with my dog hiking more than anything.

We hiked at Norris as well. They have some awesome hills that will just about kill you but me dad and my dog soldiered on

Anyway, those days are over.

You have a great day my friend. I'm hoping I can read later :-/

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not a fan of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I had a really bad experience on the Strip a few years ago. We always go into the Smokies via Townsend. We did stay in the Roosevelt Lodge a couple of years ago with some friends which was nice. (Their money not ours which made it even nicer.) I had to come back early to work which also made me the caretaker of our dogs for the remainder of the weekend.

The first time I saw the dam release water was amazing. Horns and yellow siren lights. Next thing you know, there's a four foot wall of water coming at you. River level went from about 8" to 5' just like that.

Your dog did ok around the horses? That's a cool way to spend time with your dog...and your dad.

I'm sorry those days are over. If the story is not too private, I would love to understand. Still sounds very painful for you...

No complaints on my day. Breakfast with the boys at McD's and then shopping for fun. Didn't buy much. Normally, I would waste a fall Saturday watching college football, but no games worth warching until UT-VT tonight.

Candi Melissa, great review! I'm so glad you enjoyed this book. I have a copy of it on my bookshelf but have been avoiding it lol. Wasn't sure if it was my kind of book or if I would understand much of it. I feel more encouraged to give it a try after reading about your experience! Now it will just be a matter of when to read it :)

message 16: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 12, 2016 01:16PM) (new)

I would continue with the next two books, Melissa. They still center on the same characters as "Dune." Herbert does some very interesting (and terrible) things to/with the characters. If "Dune" is "Happily Ecer After," then the sequels not so much.

If you liked Leto I and Jessica, then I would highly recommend the prequels. The "Butlerian Jihad" explains the setting...why they have Mentats instead of high speed computers, etc. That trilogy also has a very strong female protagonist. She makes Jessica look a bit whiny. "Butlerian Jihad" does not revolve around the generation prior to Paul. But for more Leto and Jessica and Bene Gesserit plotting, "House Atreides." All of the prequels are very accessible.

(view spoiler)

Wasn't Sting awesome as Feyd Rautha? His hair was the best effect in the movie....

And Captain Picard as Gurney Halleck...

Did you read the book in one day?

Olivier Delaye Maybe you should give the TV series a go: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0142032/
Just saying;-)

I haven't seen the movie in years so I don't remember much. No, I read over a hundred pages in the beginning of Sept and then the rest over the next two days. It's not a big deal. :-)

It's average good, kinda. What I mean is it's better than the movie and worth giving a whirl. The sequel, Frank Herbert's Children of Dune with James McAvoy & Susan Sarandon is much better!

Wow! That's at least a two week read for me. I know reading is not a competition in the Olympics, but that is a big deal. Impressive.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin I know, John, I feel your pain. I can't stand when I find typos every time I turn around and the damn phone types things I have never even heard of!

I might read the other books then. Actually I think I might have the second book. Hmmm, I will check when I feel like going through all of my books again. Uggg.

message 30: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 11, 2016 12:52PM) (new)

The second and third books are also much shorter.

The remaining books in the series get progressively "weirder" (because the Navigators, Gom Jabbar, Mentats, heart plugs and sandworms aren't really weird :) ) and more difficult to read.

After the first three, if you liked the Duneverse, I would highly recommend the Butlerian Jihad trilogy.

And Melissa, for me, I don't think it's a schedule issue as much as an attention issue. I can't read Herbert for extended time frames. I have to take breaks. That's what impressed me about you reading it in a short time frame.

Phrynne Great review Melissa.
I read these books so long ago I can barely remember them but they were my introduction to fantasy which I have loved ever since. I remember being fascinated by the Bene Gesserit and all the details about the Dune world.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Thank you, Phrynne :-) I think I'm only going to read the next two books in the series because so many people have told me it gets confusing after that.

*feeling nervous*

Um...you make like all of them. Or you may not even like the next two.

I loved Dune though, and only enjoyed the first three books of Frank Herbert's efforts. I have enjoy all of Brian Herbert's/Kevin Anderson's books in the Duneverse.

message 36: by Daphnee (new)

Daphnee I tried to read this one and never finished it because it was so complicated for me. I'll have to give it another shot.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin I was so afraid it was going to be to me too. Now some parts were, I'm still scratching my head over 0_o

You and me both. Herbert's plotting/writing was complex.

"Heretics" and "God Emperor" take the confusion to another level. I was just trying to extract the story out of them, but couldn't even do that.

Nice review, Melissa.
Dune is one of my all-time favorites. You're right in saying that it's complex, but I like that in science fiction, thought not as a steady diet. And I see that Dave seems to have answered all your questions, so I won't add my 2 cents to the mix, except to suggest you read the other two books in the original trilogy.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Thank you, Charles :-)

You can add anything you would like. I still don't understand why the little sister was considered an abomination. Do you know?

I'm going to read the next two books because a lot of people told me they were good but not to go beyond that.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Alia got all the learning of a Reverend Mother before she was ready for it. Wisdom must be earned, power without the work that goes into attaining the wisdom to handle it, corrupts. In the book you just read, Alia is a precocious, powerful child. But in Children of Dune she does become the abomination, the vindictive witch who tries to destroy what Paul has established.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin Oh, okay! Thank you for telling me. I was thinking it had something to do with the Reverend Mother but I wasn't for sure.
