After being completely surprised by the genre of Welcome to Glorious Tuga - I’m so glad I have more diverse reads on my list this month. This has happened to me a few times now - especially since starting this account and being exposed to a myriad of genres & it’s such a good feeling to feel refreshed after you read something entirely new! As I look to expand my thoughts and attempt perspectives I’ve never read before - one I’ve never considered was reading from the perspective of a remote islander and what it would be like to come in as an outsider looking to make a life somewhere.
Fitting in and making friends is already hard enough as an adult - and while I thought that was going to be the majority of Segal’s novel - about two-thirds of the way in, there was a major pivot that had me not putting it down until the very end!!
If you love: - Conservation efforts - conversations surrounding self/governance of island territories - Tight-knit communities - stories of female friendship ... you’ll love this book!! (I also plan on gifting this to a few people before the summer’s end!)
**Welcome to Glorious Tuga also won the Costa First Novel Award and rightly earned! Thank you, Ecco, for sending a copy of this lovely read. All thoughts are my own. - SLR
I started this ARC and in less than 50 pages - I am immediately swept away to the lovely island of Tuga where lush greenery and tropical life abound.
Some random thoughts: - I can't imagine what kind of life you'd live if you were on an island like this, sequestered away from the world. Who would you really be if you didn't have much outside influence? TV and books can't really explain the world in the way that experience does.. - Could I live in such an isolated way? With access to books and the internet - I feel like anything is possible!!...more

Reads like this are something I like to throw in every now and then as a reprieve from more adult smutty reads. Dashed had exactly what I needed in a moment when I was looking for something a little lighter.
Read if you: - Love the nostalgic feeling of seeing pieces and parts of yourself from long ago -if you're a young woman looking to make her way in the world - Grew up grieving the death of a parent, and you're looking for somewhat of a balm for your emotions
*Not smutty. Some sweet young romantic moments but nothing more.

You know those character's that you just want to scream at for consistently making silly decisions... ?
That's our main girl Lor - and somehow everything still works out even though she never takes a calm moment in the entire book.
If you loved the TOG series - and you love Aelin's cool confidence.. you'll get what I mean. Other than that - this continues to be one of my favorite series because of it's darker themes and the world building. I do wish this had had a stronger finish - but overall I think it would be a good new adult series.
**Def not young adult.

I usually love AJ reads but there are a few really off-putting about this one.

#1 - Willingly hanging out with someone you're attracted to while in a committed relationship with another person. #2 - Catting around on active service members. It's absolutely ok to break up with someone if you can't handle the relationship etc.. but that just struck me as gross. #3 - I'm all for conversations surrounding infertility etc.. I just wish it didn't come with the bonus surprise pregnancy trope that many women don't get to experience? I just want people to be able to be happy in their childless-ness as well I guess?
I'm still going to read the next book because I think I'll like it more!...more
