When Dr Ben Saunders meets the new doctor Dr Katie O’Neil he can’t believe she is going to be working with him in Peony Practice because they were rivals at medical school. In Heartcross retired vet Stuart Scott’s wife Alana who has been diagnosed with dementia finds her condition worsening and decides on a fundraiser for the charity. Katie comes up with the idea of a boat race. I found this book such an emotional read as Christie Barlow has shown insight and empathy to this devastating disease. But there are lighter moments that make this book a delight to read, there’s laughter, tears, and humour that ultimately make this series a must read. ...more

Yet again Robert Gold has devised an intricate plot, with red herrings aplenty, and perfectly paced twists for good measure. Like a fine wine, this series just keeps improving. After a night out with his boss Madeline, she disappears without a trace. The mystery centres around the Who took Madeline and why? To find Madeline, Ben will have to dig deep into a now infamous murder case that made her journalism career over a decade ago. What follows is an addictive read with thrills galore.
What I like about this series is Ben is a journalist rather than a Detective so he’s able to push the ‘legal’ boundaries. He’s more of a “act first, think later” kind of guy, which often finds him in some dangerous situations. Another strength of this series is the emphasis lies on the characters who live in Haddley Common, and the entangled lives they share. This means you’re never short of ‘suspects’ and undoubtedly adds to the suspense tenfold.
Bonus points to Robert Gold for the chapters that are told from the principal antagonist POV, as they add an extra dimension. They give the reader a valuable insight into their motivations and the events that have led them to a life of crime. As Ten Seconds comes to its conclusion, I raced through the pages, eager to see how everything fitted together. I guessed one outcome, but this in no way distracted from my enjoyment of this book. The publishers describe this series as “Broadchurch meets Harlan Coben” although I agree with this I think Gold is fast becoming a name to be recognised in his own right. You can follow me at
If you’re looking for an ORIGINAL crime series, look no further! Leave No Trace is the latest crime thriller from Jo Callaghan author of In the Blink If you’re looking for an ORIGINAL crime series, look no further! Leave No Trace is the latest crime thriller from Jo Callaghan author of In the Blink of an Eye. Yes, it’s worth reading the books in order, but not crucial. There are so many layers to this book, with a fascinating character that adds a whole extra dimension to the typical police procedural novel. It’s highly original, flawlessly paced, and extremely entertaining.
When a man’s crucified body is found at the top of Mount Judd, Kat Fand and her partner, AIDE Lock, face a challenging case. The nature of the crimes is macabre and chilling, but fascinating all the same. The author never gives too much away, which allows plenty of time for us arm chair sleuths to work out the motive for the crimes and the who. I do enjoy a crime thriller more when I feel part of the investigation.
The strength of this book is Lock. He’s such a fascinating character, but he isn’t without flaws. He isn’t able to read body language and doesn’t pick up on sarcasm or other human traits that take us human years to learn. Which often leaves his partner in crime, DCS Kat Frank having to explain the nuances of human behaviour. It’s these moments that add a dose of light humour to this dark tale.
Towards the end of the book, I found some scenes very emotional, which is unusual in a crime thriller, but add depth to the story that I wasn’t expecting. Jo Callaghan narrative gathers energy as the investigation moves forward and propels the reader to an exciting, nail biting conclusion. Overall, another brilliant read in this series. Jo Callaghan is quickly becoming one of my MUST READ authors. Highly recommended.

I have had this book on my TBR pile for a while because A: I liked the sound of it and B: I thought it would make a HUGE change from my go to crime books! Fourth Wing turned out to be much more enjoyable than I expected. If you're looking for an in-depth review detailing plot holes, the writing, characters, you are going to have to look elsewhere I’m afraid! Believe me, there’s plenty out there if you really want to know!
Fourth Wing is pure escapism, and that’s the beauty of this type of book. You can escape the reality of life and lose yourself.Fourth Wing features a kick ass heroine (Violet). She was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general - also known as her tough-as-talon’s mother - has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
Rebecca Yarros has created a world as compelling as it is deadly. I’m not sure I would have survived Basgiath War College past the first challenge! I got vertigo just reading about it! The thing I loved about this book is the Dragons, they’re lethal, terrifying, and powerful, but each has its own unique character and voice (I so want one).
This book has it all: battles, violence, treachery, and a very interesting love triangle. The wide cast of characters completely captivated me, as each one, whether good or evil, added something to the story. I particularly loved seeing the growing bonds between Violet and her dragons, as well as amongst her squad. I guess the big question is: Is it the best literature I have ever read? Definitely not. Was it gripping and highly entertaining? It’s a HUGE FAT YES from me. I loved my first foray into fantasy fiction, and i’ve already started reading Iron Flame the second book in the series.

There’s a new kid on the block in the shape of Dr. Olivia Winter, a forensic psychologist. I’m a huge fan of the Maltilda Darke series, which I thought was pretty dark! But Michael Wood takes the reader to a whole new level of darkness. I absolutely loved A Mind of a Murderer with its gripping plot and intriguing protagonist; it’s every crime thriller junkie's dream read!
One thing that I love in a crime thriller is getting a glimpse into the darkest corners of the human psyche, and in A Mind of Murderer, you get a front-row seat! Olivia Winter is a survivor of a serial killer; it’s one of the main reasons she’s spent her life delving into the minds of the most depraved killers, hoping to get a better understanding of the motivation behind their actions. Normally, when you start a new series, it can take a while to get a feel for the main character, but Michael Wood has done it again and created a protagonist who you immediately feel a connection to. She’s flawed and fascinating, and her vast knowledge of serial killers is the icing on the proverbial cake! The relationship between Olivia and DI Foley gets off to a promising start, and I’m eager to see how their relationship grows.
The plot shows a serial killer stalking the streets of London. As the body count rises, the police need Olivia’s help to profile him before he can strike again. But to do so, she will need to confront her own demons. There are elements of Olivia’s past that run alongside the current investigation, which adds to the tension tenfold. The author does have a very dark imagination when it comes to crime scenes, so there are some graphic scenes in this book, but they are absolutely essential to the story. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have the impact it does. Although I was desperate to know 'Whodunnit' this book makes you more interested in the 'why'.
Wood’s has created a serial killer who will send shivers down your spine. I found their methods unnerving, so much so that my blood pressure must have gone through the roof! There is someone more depraved than the killer, a master of manipulation, a sick, twisted individual. You will loathe them from your first introduction, but my god, what a fascinating character! A Mind of a Murderer explores the depths of the human psyche in a way that moves you through the book with ease, anticipation, and a big dollop of dread! With a fast-paced plot that never wavers from a dark path, this book is a must-read for all crime fans. Mark my word, Michael Wood is one of the best writers in this genre. If you haven’t read any of his books yet, you're missing a real treat. I highly recommend it.

‘Be still my beating heart’ sums up how I was feeling after I finished the captivating gothic thriller Yule Island which is based on a true story. Fro‘Be still my beating heart’ sums up how I was feeling after I finished the captivating gothic thriller Yule Island which is based on a true story. From the start, Johana ‘Gustawsson’s vivid descriptions of Yule Island, with its oppressive, inescapable, and darkest winter landscape, strike a sense of unease into the reader. Coupled with a teenager’s death, which has the markings of a ritualistic killing, the author plunges the reader into a dark place where horrifying secrets from the past hide buried in the shadows.
The plot without giving too much away centres around art expert Emma Lindahl whose latest job is to appraise the antiques and artefacts in the infamous mansion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families. Situated on the island of Storholmen, where a young woman was murdered nine years earlier, her killer never found. Detective Karl Rosen joins her as they investigate a new horrific murder. To the who? And Why? This takes time to get to, but the mystery and suspense grows significantly throughout. I should mention David Wariner who has done a magnificent job in translating Yule Island into English, capturing the tone perfectly. I loved how the author unpeel’s the layers of the mystery, never too much or too little, but just enough to unsettle the reader.
Like all new relationships, there’s a settling-in period, so there’s much to learn about Emma and Rosen. As the story progresses, the author is not afraid to tackle some darker themes, which heighten those feelings of dread. I appreciated how the author melds historical facts with Swedish myths and legends, as it definitely adds to the whole gothic atmosphere. Johana Gustawsson’s title ‘the queen of French noir’ is spot on. It’s a rare breed of author who's able to create an intricately woven story that’s visceral and addictively dark whilst keeping the reader enthralled. What more can I say? Apart from Yule Island is a deftly plotted novel of the highest order with a shocking twist in its tail.

New Beginnings At The Old Bake House is a delightful book, a heartwarming tale perfect for a dreary winter’s night. Christie Barlow’s descriptive writing had me longing for freshly baked bread, cakes, pastries, and chocolate. My mouth was watering the whole time I was reading! It’s winter in Scotland and the fictional quaint village of Heart Cross. The author sets the scene perfectly. So much so I grabbed my favourite winter blanket and put my log burner on!
Love Heart Lane is such a close community with the most adorable characters. But that doesn’t mean the characters lead ‘perfect lives’, they all have their own trials and tribulations to contend with. It’s such a heartwarming tale that I read it in an afternoon. The author explores some tough issues, grief, abandonment and homelessness, which she does with a great deal of sympathy and understanding.
It’s not all doom and gloom though there’s gentle humour, and a story that will melt even the coldest heart. I have said it before what I absolutely love about the authors’ books is her attention to her characters. They are a joy to read about. They are so well developed by the end of the book you feel like you are saying “goodbye” to old friends. Highly recommended.

He knows exactly what the die hard crime thriller loverRobert Bryndza is one of my all-time favourite crime thriller authors for an excellent reason. He knows exactly what the die hard crime thriller lover wants in a crime read. There’s no slow burning plots that take FOREVER to get into. The crimes are original, and Erika Foster the main protagonist, has all the qualities I love in a lead Detective. Lethal Vengeance is the eighth book in the series, and yet it still feels fresh, exciting and just as gripping as the previous books in the series.
There’s a serial killer loose in London. The victims are high profile; the victims left naked, hog-tied, and dead in their beds! Without giving too much away, the Met’s top brass seem hell bent on covering up certain events BUT how far are they willing to go to protect their own? The investigation is a tough one. Every line of enquiry seems to be manipulated by the powers that be. The reader gets a genuine sense of Erika’s frustrations, and her distrust of higher-ranking officers.
Erika is one of my favourite fictional detectives. She’s ballsy and opinionated and doesn’t play by the rules if it means she can bring a killer to justice! But we get a glimpse of her vulnerable side to her in this book. She feels like a ‘dinosaur’ compared to her younger counterparts. But do not fear, she’s still feisty, and she’s not afraid to ruffle a few feathers along the way!
I appreciated the occasional chapters told from the killer’s POV. There’s something fascinating about finding out what motivates a killer! I couldn’t help but feel a smidgen of sympathy for this killer after I learnt their backstory. I appreciate a plot that veers towards the dark side. But it also has to be fuelled by tension, suspense and twists and surprises at every turn, which Robert Bryndza accomplishes with ease. Lethal Vengeance is a deliciously dark and twisted thriller that crime book junkies will devour in one hugely satisfying sitting. I cannot recommend this book enough or the whole series come to that!
