if you liked TAKE MY HAND or HOUSE OF EVE, this is for you! historical fiction that does not follow a war (or WW2 lol) and deals a lot with women’s rights, abortion/fertility, etc.
the ending was so good and just made me want to give these girls a hug. it has 3 POVs and follows 3 women who all get intertwined in a shocking way and it was so well done. i learned SO much from this book and really think this should be required reading in school. it’s set in Canada but my goodness all of this applies to the US (even though it’s set in the 60s/70s...more

this was just okay. i was expecting more mystery and a bigger twist? it had ALOT of characters and it’s somewhat of a mystery but you don’t know what is mysterious about it or what people are investigating until the back middle. the ending was kind of lackluster for a mystery.
it was unique—there’s a town putting on a play and people are out to get each other and it’s a power grab and then a body is found and you are trying to figure out 1) who it is and 2) if they were killed and 3) if yes, then by whom?
thrillers with a lot of characters and red herrings typically aren’t my jam, but i read this in one sitting so it was enough to keep my attention during a reading slump! under 200 pages and easy to knock out quickly....more

it gave me FINLAY DONOVAN IS KILLING IT (series) meets CRAWDADS vibes. enter: a murder mystery with quirky characters and comedic banter in a swamp.
the beginning was great, it started off nice and with action. looooved Lana, she was the best. the family dynamics were entertaining and adorable at times. the murder mystery became a bit of a stretch…
the last 70ish pages is where i was checked out—it was tough to finish and just felt like the resolution drug out a bit. there also wasn’t a “plot twist” for me so i was craving that given its a suspense.
BUT, i’m picky with “thrillers.” go in expecting a family drama with a side of mystery and use it for a quick page turner book and it’ll do the trick! ...more

i devoured this book in 1-2 audiobook listening/sittings! it was so interesting to listen to and i loved learning more about Kerry.
the beginning started off really strong and i loved chapters 1-2 which pulled me in to the big drama/reveal at present day. then she took the story back to her childhood and you had to wait until the last chapter or 2 to learn what happened to her leading up to present day. the order of the events was a bit off for me—i like when memoirs are told chronologically and this was semi-that, but she did skip around a bit.
as a huge Scandal fan, i’ve loved Kerry for awhile and i was interested to hear more about her and her time on the show, etc. of course there wasn’t THAT much tea or info shared about her time on the show which was upsetting bc it spanned over 7 years. i wanted to learn more about her relationships w her costars like Fitz and Mellie and Quinn… but it was rather surface level and she talked most about her relationship w Shonda (producer) than anyone else. she did share how close she was w the cast and how they were a family tho. and now i want to rewatch ASAP...more

the vibes were great, love a good friends to lovers trope, the side plots were more interesting, it wasn’t forcing a “bad boy” trope like the first two, Cassie and Tate seemed mature… i was vibing!! Tate was definitely my fave boy MC of the 3 books (i needed a break from the twins lol). Cassie was prob my second fave girl MC behind Mac. but of course, we got cameos of everyone in this one!!
the only thing i wasn’t sure about was the 3rd act breakup in this one… it seemed VERY random. this was also the longest of the 3rd and they were so happy and everything was going so good that the 3rd act conflict almost felt… too late? glad it was resolved quickly though ...more

TAKE IT BACK remains my fave from this author—it was a 5 star read for me and one of my fave thrillers of 2020!
this was a good blend of a neighborhood suspense, family/moral drama and a procedural thriller. i expected a bit more “thriller” than we got, so i recommend adjusting expectations for a mystery / suspense with lots of drama and that should help! neighborhood thrillers are my fave trope, so i’m also a bit tougher on those books than most since i’ve read so many.
so many characters were unlikeable and it this book really makes you think “what would i do if that happened to me?” keeping as spoiler free as i can, but it’s definitely a moral compass type of book ...more
