I was looking for depth, but this book was all surface. It's also quite a dull read.
And I loathe how every other chapter in the book is about a country or a region, and then there's the CONTINENT of Africa. Always and everywhere treated as a monolith. Africa is often referred to as if it's a country rather than an entire continent with over 50 diverse (in so many ways, including geography) countries. It's a huge pet peeve of mine....more

The story of that meal is awful/hilarious and it was nice to revisit it (and I enjoyed how the author expanded on it). I also really enjoyed The Comments Section, In Case of Emergency: Break Fast, and most especially Gender Roles and Cinnamon Rolls. One frustration I had was that every essay felt a bit too long. ...more

And yet somehow reading this book, I am surprised all over again. It is completely and utterly ridiculous how women have been treated in the medical field for so long. Women deserve better than this. There were so many times when I read this book that I found myself saying out loud “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!” It’s just unbelievable to me how horrible women have been treated by the medical field and ignored for so long and how pervasive the myths that sprung up so long ago can continue to govern the way that women are treated medically today. The first governmental initiative to research heart disease in women wasn’t established until 1994, and it took until 2005 for us to get a thorough anatomical study of the clitoris. I don’t even know what to say. Our medical system has so much work to do....more

It's entertaining and a bit gory, and I can see it being a hit with middle grades students interested in the topic. It's a pretty quick and easy read. I appreciate that, as middle grades books seem to be getting longer and longer, and that can be a turn-off to anyone who isn't a big reader. I enjoyed reading it and, despite having read a fair bit about infectious disease, learned several new things. ...more

She always makes me think about things in ways I've never thought of. Early on she states, "In indigenous ways of knowing, we say that a thing cannot be understood until it is known by all four aspects of our being: mind, body, emotion, and spirit." The essays go on to do just that. Thank you, Autumn, for this lovely reading experience!...more

I learned so much, and I know I'll go back to certain sections of the book as needed. It is crazy to me how little women know about menstruation and menopause and their own bodies. Books like this are so important for those of us who crave information and feel so lost. I am so thankful that Dr. Gunter is out there combating misinformation and working to make sure women are as informed as possible so they can make good decisions for themselves. ...more
