This one felt more cliche and focuses more on 80's aspects that I am not as much a fan of. Still, Ernest Cline has an insane amount of pop culture knowledge for all this! I hated seeing the split between Art3mis (Samantha) and Wade. He has gone a bit creepy in his power and she is being jumpily judging of those she once called friends. Ick! I still liked the hunt aspect and seeing some other sides of the Oasis was cool. One decent twist early on and after that, I felt this followed too far a straight pattern. One thing is clear though: tech can be scary!
2022- Audiobook. Once again, Wil Wheaton is the great narrator for this. He does such a fantastic job. Including his voice going oddly high when Wade is stressing out or excited! The energy he puts into reading this brought out a bit more enjoyment. So this one blends a bit of 80s and more 90's references that I missed the first time. Do you like A.I. beings? Have you ever wondering if they would take over things? Then read this! ...more

It took awhile, at first sounded too childish but as the story depth grows I felt more involved. The silly humor and situations were great! There are some strange aliens! And not ones I can say I'd normally want to meet. Everything is easy to relate to. Right down to the tv they can watch. I really liked the pace and the younger perspective of a very dire situation. The story had a sense of urgency I like but it was kept somewhat light-hearted. Great narration!...more

Some interesting twists in this. One really surprised me but also had me oddly happy. There is a lot of traveling in this one again but honestly, the timeline and locations felt a bit disjointed at times. Also, there were a couple of blatant typo word and name errors and for a finished book, it bothered me. I wish we got more with Kit in this as well. I felt his character had ptoential to expand upon since the first book but no luck. But the story is still very enjoyable. One a major positive-I LOVED the epilogue!!! Rarely have a seen a book wrapped up so well. All questions really are answered Nothing and nobody forgotten or left to question. I appreciate this more than I can express! Well done!!! Now I would just love a side story around Valus. :)...more

Aemi has to work hard, quick and be 5 steps ahead of everyone in this novel. There are so many sides. So many secrets. I would not want to be in her shoes! Deciding whom to trust, whom to care for...and most important: who wants her dead. This book had me questioning each character, their motives and true allegiances. I thought I knew and still have theories but I honestly am not sure and I love who the author can keep me wondering! I like Tallyn as one of my favorites but this time he earned some early question marks that continued to grow. What is Valus's game? How much does Aemi's family really care? I loved how the cities are described in this! Beautiful. It is strange to to think a full underwater civilization like that but Kate Avery Ellison does a pretty good job to make that happen....more

I liked this a bit less than the previous 2. A bit slower overall. Aemi (or whatever one wants to call her in this book-everyone has their own name/nickname) is obsessed with two things. Learning about Perilous and finding her friend Kit. I find it interesting how much she kept going to her former betrothed for information. I really wonder what he thinks of her. Nol is back is a cryptic way. I don't understand how she deals with him in this. While the first 3/4 of the book goes slow it does pick up in the end. Things finally happen which is what salvaged this from being a 3 star. ...more

So much happens in this last volume. Although I feel there could be more in a way... Everything is answered. Most of my suspicions were confirmed. I wish it was a little less predictable. The only other flaw I had is how Nova reacts about mid-book. I don't feel her reaction was real. On her part, not the authors' necessarily. Hard to say. Otherwise this was fantastic! I read over 1/2 the book in one day. Work kept me from diving in too deep at first but once I had a day off I just had to read it all! I wish I had more on Max through this and gotten to know Danna better. Oscar and Ruby are great but so much of this really circles Adrian and Nova. As all pretenses are uncovered, and when no more disguises remain... I kept wondering who would cave first. Who would piece what together... Loved every minute!
2024- Audiobook- Even as a re-read this kept me hooked. It is so addictive still! From the Rejects making it onto the scene, things being destroyed, loyalties tested and new sides being drawn this book doesn't have a dull chapter. Do people die? Yes- you have been warned. Does it have a happy ending...sort of. We are left with a curious possible feel for a spin-off or yet another book that has never come. ...more

I really wavered which way to go with this one. And might een changeonce I have had some more time away. OR when I next reread it. Because I do plan to in the future. As a general rule, I quite liked the story. What I didn't like was how 2/3 of the book is delivered. We get several different points of time, some of which are specified, others we are left to guess. Mostly over a 3 year time period but each chapter interlude also has points that where either before of after these events. It added some confusion and a lot of frustration that I just couldn't let go enough of to give a higher rating.
I liked how the series is ended, most of the answers are given with little left to too much speculation in a bad way. Although I must admit, once I got there I wanted a bit more.
If you thought what Goddard did in the last book was bad, you are in for several surprises. Once of the vilest villians ever!! I loved Citra's continuous growth in this! She is something! Jeri is a new character that quickly became another favorite of mine.

I liked seeing the maturity of Citra/Anastasia in this one. This one has a lot of backstabbing and betrayal. Lots of trust issues. I really liked getting the Thunderheads thoughts. Greyson is a new favorite character in this. Tyger is back and that was a surprise. I liked the unpredictability of this one. I mean we get plenty of hints to easily guess an outline of what will happen but the details are always worse (in the best way). I loved how the intrigue builds in this....more

A bit futuristic with transportation, clones, plums and keys but not so far out there to be a major sci-fi. Just elements of. Possibly even near-futurish. I liked Emma as a character but I didn't feel she was too smart in how she went about certain things. One of the 'ten' top students at the school yet she makes some naive moves. Never let that girl be a detective! She tries but goes about things wrong and has little real sense of where she needs to be focusing. I liked the twists and turns and motive guessing of the characters. Although some were predictable it was still an enjoyable journey watching her piece things together.
2020 reread- Having already read this I mostly wanted a recap before diving into book 2. But I had a lot of fun focusing on the Similars and a few other characters. Trying to get some snippet of extra info or foretelling on what to expect. Emma's lack of asking some basic questions, even to herself, annoyed me once again. And, short of the similars, is supposedly the 2nd smartest student of her grade? I know I mentioned that in my first review but that more specific thought annoyed me to the point I had to pause my reading at one point. I wish we got more of the other similars and why they so blindly to along with so much. ...more

When I started this I didn't realize we would be jumping into a new place and new characters. That took me by surprise but it's my own fault for not reading the synopsis. I was just too eager to start this. It took me a while to get into these characters. Like the first book, the plot builds and builds through the book. I was a patient reader when I started and was okay pausing in my reading. The further I got into the book, the less I was okay with stopping. The tension is fantastic. And again, we get some good twists. The ending was mild compared to the first book but had me more curious about this Illuminae group. I didn't like the characters at first at all. One felt spoiled and the other trouble... yet both surprised me with their depth by the end. I still don't get their romance though. Still too insta-love for my taste. I must have this series on my shelves one day!
2022- Audiobook version. OMG I love this as an audiobook! Hannah was so sassy! I almost like it more in audio with all the cast members. Although I wish there were more sound effects and sometimes the tones used didn't go well with the words or situation so there are a couple jarring moments where I went: "They wouldn't say it like that. Be more angry or sad or pause a bit with that line delivery." Having read this before I was able to better enjoy the earlier chapters and pick up on the subtle lines between characters....more

One of my favorite things in this book are the monkey robots! They are so cute!! It was interesting watching Alainn try to act like an automatron/robot. And she isn't very good but apparently good enough to fool the naive germ-a-phobe Lorcccan. The house is way too smart (and nosy) for anyone's good! I would never want an AI to run my house after this. Especially one that has any free will! I have mixed thoughts to Alainn's whole life-risking bits they tossed in. And the couple random chapters with her brother or boss seemed unnecessary.
2022- I surprised myself re-reading this. And enjoyed it again! All the Rose AI's confused me, especially toward the end. I must have missed one the first time I read it. Lorccan's online girlfriend has more issues that he does. Such anxiety! Yet so brave in some ways too! it was interesting the focus on mental disorders for the characters. It hit me harder on this reread and how much most of them really struggled....more

And on the flip side, how Nova is getting to know, and even care, about some of the Renegades. The double lives they both live, hiding from each other. The tension is perfect at times!
