"Go chase the moon, tell it your lies." Pg. 36
The Lover by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a whimsical and haunting short story that is very reminiscent of a Grimm's fairy tale. Based on The Little Red Riding Hood, it follows Judith, a young maiden, living with her beautiful older sister. She ends up falling head over heels for her sister Alice's charming husband Nathaniel, however, soon after an unnamed man crosses her path as well. Launched into an affair with Nathaniel and an interesting relationship with the unnamed man, Judith's story unfolds in a twisted and page-turning way. The writing was stunning and left me wanting to read more from Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This is the perfect cozy, yet chilling short story to read by the fire this winter!...more

i love reading books set in schools, and at work, i get a lot of time to do homework/read so it was fun to be reading this on campus this week! darcy and tory are really likable characters, im rooting for them for sure. there's also elements of the magical world and school that just give me huge pjo and hp vibes which i love. the 4 boys suck but im sure they will become love interests hahaha.
everyone is right though - once you start you cant stop and im excited to binge this entire series!
*edit* i ended up dropping this to 4 starts because it didn't have as big of a lasting impact on me and i have't continued the series yet lmao

how can i not give this book 5 stars? i loved everything about it, the plot, the time period, the characters... all! such a strong start to the series i’m so excited to continue! it is the perfect amount of fantasy for me (because i like when there are fantasy aspects, but in our world instead of a new one) and i adore this time period and london as the setting!
also side note, this gave me such big vampire diaries vibes but i think that’s because i’m watching the show right now lol...more

From the synopsis of this book I was hooked but I cannot say the same for the first few chapters. Caraval was a book with promise that just fell flat From the synopsis of this book I was hooked but I cannot say the same for the first few chapters. Caraval was a book with promise that just fell flat for me and I’m bummed to say that. It has immense hype surrounding it and was even compared to The Night Circus but I guess my hopes were just too high.
The characters made me feel nothing. Tella and Scarlett’s bond wasn’t one where I thought “Wow me and my sister are just as close as them!” I also didn’t like Julian at all throughout the novel. The only time he didn’t annoy me was during the last chapter. I didn’t ship Julian and Scarlett at all which was a bit of an issue when it came to enjoying the book. I felt as though Scarlett was just infatuated by him during the game and their “love” was a bit in the moment.
The world was so unique and the game, Caraval, was so interesting but other than the initial introduction there wasn’t much world building after that. I just wanted more.
It was such an interesting concept and like I said before, had so much promise. The mystery and magic was overshadowed by the romance and the big reveal at the end just made me feel like my emotions had been cheated on many times throughout the novel. Overall the lack of world building and admiration for the characters left me unsatisfied but I still enjoyed my time whilst reading it. I’m hoping that the sequel will impress me because I do plan on picking it up when it comes out.
If you are going into this with the thought of it being like The Night Circus I would push that thought away because I think you’ll be disappointed but if you are just interested in the book I would still recommend it, hopefully you’ll connect with the characters more than I did because sometimes that’s what makes or breaks it for a novel....more
