If you went to a QuakerI’ve never read a book that has so closely mirrored my real life experience, so you’ll forgive me if I sound off for a second. If you went to a Quaker school, you must read this. I thought so many of my high school experiences were unique to my specific school, but it turns out they were unique to the Quaker school experience on a larger scale. This book perfectly captured so many unsettling elements of a Quaker education: the inappropriate relationships with teachers, anti-racism that’s actually racist, the idea that we’re all equal except for all of the blatant favoritism. The author did such a good job of showing the hypocrisies at the core of Quaker schooling. There were also moments that brought back feelings of so much love and gratitude for the education I had: meeting for worship, the importance of the arts, GOOD relationships with teachers, celebrations of individuality etc. Speaking more generally, I loved the way that high school relationships and emotions were portrayed as the be-all and end-all, because at that age, it really truly felt that way. I have never felt more alive or more at risk of dying than I did at play practice or iChatting my crush, and this book GOT that. I also was so intrigued by Fay’s experience with her gender identity… I’ve never seen dysphoria represented like it was in this book and I really loved getting to explore that.
4 stars because it was too long, slow at parts, and there was too much going on towards the end, but I really did enjoy it! I’d love for someone who didn’t go to a Quaker school to read this and tell me what you think!
Edit: changed my rating to 4.5 stars (rounded to 5) because this book is really staying with me and I barely remember those minor criticisms when thinking about the book...more

I was so intrigued by the mythology that for the first time maybe ever I really didn't care much about the romance. The middle of the book took me quite a bit of time to get through, but the end picked back up in a way that has me excited to read the sequel. I hope that the next book deals more with the myths and gods etc. Overall I'd say the plot was much stronger than the romance, which I didn't find myself particularly invested in. ...more

I thought I was getting myself into a psychological thriller which wasn’t at all the case. NEVER have I cried like this while reading a book. Such a testament to how SJM brings her characters to life and how connected I became to them. This entire series was an amazing tribute to the kinds of love that exist beyond romantic love (but it also gave me exactly what I needed in terms of romance and for that I am thankful.) For context, I read this third- I can’t imagine I would have gotten into the series if I had read this first, but I also didn’t particularly enjoy taking myself out of the main storyline and reading it third. I honestly don’t think it matters that much when you read this (maybe I’ll change my mind who’s to say), just do whatever makes the most sense to you! I struggled through the first two novellas, and felt like Celaena was a completely different character than the one I had come to know. Things definitely started picking up in the Red Desert, and the final novella was completely devastating and made the journey worth it. I’m scared something’s wrong with me but I really don’t know why people have so many negative things to say about this book. It was action packed and Xaden was as gorgeous as ever. Even though it was spoiled for me I actually liked the ending and am excited for that plot line to pick right back up in the next book. I will say a qualm I have is that things are described in a way more complicated way than they need to be (ex. the runes/wards and also I cannot for the life of me orient myself in the battle scenes). And yes violet was annoying in the beginning but we all have our days… 4.5 stars ...more

I missed Rhys terribly, and the small moments we had with him were usually unpleasant since we were viewing them through Nesta’s eyes. I love Cassian to death but Nesta, for the first 2/3 of the book, was so insufferable I sometimes had a hard time picking up the book.
