Wow, this book was like a fresh breath of mountain air after reading several bleak & graphic translated stories of femicide and trauma. Haunting and magical family saga set against rural, coastal farmland nestled up against a mountain range. So much heart, grief & loss, loneliness, forgotten dreams, motherhood, witches, folklore, and myths CW: Child abuse...more

The two women are so used to city life, it takes awhile for them to adjust to living in a rural setting. One of my favorite tropes at play here! A couple has invested so much emotional bandwidth into this new lifestyle and something is going to throw a wrench into it—like THE NEIGHBORS Bartz did a great job keeping my focus on one thing while something else was happening, the perfect setup, although I feel like this needed one more page for the conclusion. A good introduction to Bartz, I will seek out more by this author ...more

The Bad Friend By Caroline Kepnes I will for sure read them all! This one was so good. Classic Kepnes storytelling. If you love her "YOU" series and love to hate Joe Goldberg, you will enjoy loving to hate the protagonist in this story as well. Ellen is a woman unsatisfied with what she has and has a roving eye for what she thinks she needs. This puts her in direct competition with her best friend, but the reality is, that she's just a miserable person in competition with only herself. We all know people like this. I do too and it was so satisfying and validating to watch this play out--even though it does get pretty dark...because it's Caroline Kepnes!

The prose is sparse and the main character, Laura, is weird but interesting. A young woman who left home is now modeling for an art class. Around 40% the story leans into body horror; the detailed descriptions are very detailed and graphic--uncomfortable. 50% I had to tap out. The MC finds some photographs in a drawer and then describes them in explicit detail and I wish I hadn't read what I read. Fucking sick. TW for grotesque subject matter, unsexy sex stuff, and horrible disgusting shit with the corpses of children. Ugh. No. Bye....more

If I decided to close out the year with this Amazon Original Obsession series on Kindle Unlimited. I loved Alyssa Cole's book When No One is Watching. If you enjoyed that novel, you'll enjoy this because she has such a firm grasp on the way people use apps and social media. Remember in, When No One is Watching, the neighbors chat on that Neighborhood app? My favorite parts in the book. Just a Girl is a story told entirely through DMs, TikTok video transcripts, emails, texts, and social media posts/comments. It reminds me a lot of that movie that recently came out called, Missing (if you enjoyed that film). You'll blow through these 100+ pages and feel a wide range of emotions-- anxiety, frustration, and fear. Everything is so realistic. You've seen this shit. You've read comments and escalation on the internet just like this....more
