I also didn't realize how good it is for kids who are interested in learning more about sharks. The book begins with a jellyfish TV host by the name of Bob. Bob decides to spend the show telling humans why sharks are misunderstood while also providing fun and interesting facts. I already knew most of the facts discussed in this book so they didn't surprise me; however, I did enjoy that the audience members were humans and not other fish. Shark also had an interesting perspective of himself. He maintained and acted in his natural habitat as long as "the people" weren't watching. This definitely a creative way to introduce children to non-fiction without throwing them directly into the non-fiction section. The ending led directly into the second book. ...more

I really enjoyed the fact that the characters were sheep who help a Wolf read after he learns that he has a bad reputation in books. The author also didn't shy away from the fact that the wolf would continue to hunt the sheep periodically because it was in his nature. It made the book true to the characters. I also found the dental hygiene aspects of the book hilarious. And it was a complete bonus that the two sheep loved to do stuff like knit and read. Although I can't knit I love to crochet and read so inevitably this book was perfect for me. I wasn't a huge fan of the artwork, but the story made up for it. ...more

As a library assistant, I often see authors and illustrators develop counting books that focus on counting by ones. This book introduces a new concept: counting by twos. It definitely is great way to prepare those children who are learning more complex methods associated with math. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that concept applied towards the end of the book. One of the other interesting aspects of this book was the illustrations. They had an easy going flow to them that made them "perfectly imperfect." I could be wrong in my assumption but I'm pretty sure the illustrator used water color as the medium. Either way, the pictures turned out great and definitely remained associated with the content of the book.
One of the best things about this book is the fact that it focuses on concept skills as well as problem solving skills. Our main character knows that she can't handle dealing with twenty sheep so she must develop a method that allows her to not only keep her sanity, but also allows every single sheep to stay. I definitely didn't expect to see that element; however, she actively came up with solutions and when they didn't work she started to develop new ones. I don't think people always realize how important problem solving skills can be especially during a child's development. The author did an amazing job incorporating that theme. I would recommend this to early elementary students and their parents. It would be a great book to read during the evening time. I personally would love a hardcover copy of this for the days I do morning and evening storytime at the library. ...more

I definitely recommend this as a new book for kids that are learning the alphabet and love animals. It's all about a moose who wants to be a part of the alphabet, but he keeps getting looked over and joining in on the wrong parts. I just picked it up on a whim and I'm glad I did. This was such an adorable picture book and I loved the simplicity of the art. It reminded me so much of my own experiences with having that toy or blanket that you don't want to give up even when your parents just want to do something as simple as clean it.
Owen is the most adorable character I have ever seen. He just...ahhh I can't even find the words to describe the way I feel about him. I really enjoyed the writing style of Henkes as well so I know that I will be checking out more of his works sometimes soon. I don't know if I would necessarily recommend this as a read a loud simply because it's on the longer side and it may take to long to read for storytime; however, this is a great story to share with kids that are definitely going through the same phase as Owen....more

This book was adorable! I think everyone can relate to that person that comes around and always asks you so many questions and can seem incredibly annoying, but they're only doing it because they love you and they really love being your friend. I definitely have been the duck in various situations, but I definitely have friends that represent the bear who after getting annoyed loves the duck just as much as the duck loves him.
The artwork was interesting because it was vibrant, but seemingly fuzzy at the same time. I know that probably doesn't make sense, but once you read it I think you'll understand where I'm coming from. I've never read anything by this author before, but if her other work is like this then I'm pretty sure I would enjoy it. If you're looking for a picture book that teaches children about friendship and caring then I would definitely recommend this book. ...more

All of the animals are putting all of their energy and time into trying to help the little mouse got to sleep. They seem to try a little bit of everything before something really works. It can remind you of what your parents/guardians had to do in order to put you to sleep or what you may have to do in order to put your own kids to sleep.
I loved the illustrations which seemed as though they were done in colored pencil. The only thing that is difficult about it is the rhyming scheme which I found sort of awkward to follow. I think I understand what the other was attempting to do, but it still made it a little more of a slow read than anticipated.

After reading so much Eric Carle last year, I was happy to find that I still enjoyed his works and this one in particular. I was definitely fooled by the cover in seeing the blue gorilla because I thought that it was going to be solely about animals. Little did I know that this book encourages movement in children with the help of animals. If you're looking for a way to assist your young child in moving around more or becoming more flexible I would definitely recommend this book.
The various movements and motions had me wanting to attempt various twist and turns! I loved that the text overall moves the child in the direction of proving that they, like the animals, are capable of being just as flexible as the animals they see from day to day. I think this is great read aloud material and something parents/guardians should think about doing with their little ones. The artwork was great as always and in the amazing style of Eric Carle. ...more
