As petty this may sound, I don’t like it when Covid is mentioned in fictional books. I’m no anti-vaxxer or covid-doubter. But it’s nice to read books that are far from reality. I mean thank God TikTok wasn’t mentioned here but still. We could have done without mentioning Covid and lockdown.

This book wasn’t as thrilling as I’d hope it to be. But I still enjoyed it. I liked the twist—though quite predictable.
The cover is nicer than the inside.
Oh and can I just say…why is the author obsessed with the word “flick”? Literally in the beginning, (maybe 5 chapters in a row) had that word. “She flicked her wrist”; “I flick a text from her”; “I flick on the light switch”; “something something flick”
So maybe not word for word. But I didn’t want to go through my book and type it out here. ...more

I don’t like how she writes. Sure the list of characters in the beginning helps. And then she’ll randomly introduce—what, 15?—other characters that I’m like…who tf is this??
And she’ll casually mention abbreviated names like: CID, FTSE, SARC as if we’d know what they are (until later on where she mentions what they stand for).
It’s book 5…and that’s exactly how it feels. It’s like watching episode 13 from season 6 without ever watching the prior episodes. It’s not like Steve Cavanagh’s work where I was immediately hooked even if I’ve never read books 1-4. ...more

Never thought I’d say that about a book to movie adaptation. But this book was so annoying to get through. I think I’m going to DNF it.
I noticed there’s a lot of random “explanations”? Is that what you’d call it? Such as (not actually pulled from the book) “She ordered an espresso from the shop—she doesn’t like cold drinks. It gives her headaches. Then stopped by at a bookstore—she prefers books. Movies and tv shows are a waste of time for her”
Seriously. Every chapter had to have some kind of random little explanation irrelevant to the story. ...more

The break in starts right off the bat. No kidding. But then it beats around the bush so much so that it loses tension. There’s no thrill. She spots the person then maybe 8 pages in, that’s when she moves cuz she keeps talking about other things. Like flashbacks, her kid’s sleepwalking problems, how the house looks.
Then she finally (!!!) moves. But nope. This book goes on about other things instead of flowing to give us that same kind of fear they’re feeling.
I just wish the author gave a bit of back story in the first few chapters AND THEN!!! the thrill happens just so that it would flow smoothly. ...more

It had a different vibe from the first two books. I don’t think it’s something I’ll re-read unlike the other books. But the epilogue was pretty amazing.

I was going to rate this book 2 stars. But for that twist, I gave it another. Everyone annoyed me. It felt like a Lifetime movie of actors dreaming to make it to Hollywood.
