It's being compared to Mexican Gothic, but does anyone know if The Hacienda is better written than Mexican Gothic (I did not find that book lived up to its hype)?

Paula 100% better than MG. The only comparison to each other is the culture aspect, IMO. The Hacienda is a true classic gothic horror story: I’d compare it to Rebecca & The Tell-Tale Heart. This book is so thoughtfully written & intriguing. Definitely worth reading!
marita lazarus thank you for asking... I did not feel Mexican Gothic lived up to the hype
Deanna Thorsland crowe I enjoyed Mexican Gothic more, however I did enjoy The Hacienda as well. There are parallels….the houses are both creepy, but the depth of creepy is better with Mexican Gothic, IMHO. The Hacienda left me wanting more…more depth of characters, more…it felt rushed.
Lorin (paperbackbish) Yes, I liked this one much more -- to me, Mexican Gothic was more of a mystery. The Hacienda is true gothic fiction. I really enjoyed it!
Chanele Its not. Save your money.
Tonia I preferred Mexican Gothic to this, especially in how it was written. This one ticks the boxes but doesn't seem to find the right tone, in my opinion.
Miranda Newfield So... I try really hard not to say anything negative about books (ie, I don't review the ones I didn't like).

I read both Mexican Gothic and The Hacienda. I read Mexican Gothic first. I just wrote a review for The Hacienda. I did not write a review for Mexican Gothic. Take that as you will! :P
JJMill Mexican Gothic was better, this felt more Hollywood. You might still like it.
Amy The Hacienda was so much better. I thought Mexican Gothic was such a let down.
Kell Schneider Agreed! The Hacienda outshone Mexican Gothic IMO. I think they both could make excellent mini-series or horror movie adaptations that I would eat right up though! The Hacienda just stood out to me as stronger.
Jessica Moro I think so! It has a better plot in my opinion
PJ Linney I actually liked Mexican Gothic a lot more. The Hacienda was boring — needed editing IMO
Ali I definitely liked this book better. Very different story.
Barbara I liked The Hacienda much better. The writing itself was certainly better, and it was spooky. Mexican Gothic is just creepy because the family is gross and demented.
coffee way way better than Mexican Gothic
