I was giving an example. This list seems to be a bit more light-hearted than that. But if you agree that someone who adores Mein Kampf might be ok to be wary of, that any objection to this list is of degree, not kind.

let's just carry on with the conversation....i found it satisfying to scroll through this list, pick out the ones i love and add to the Dealbreaker Dealbreakers list. :)

and yeah, i'd like to think this is a lighthearted list for most of us. i only added one, but it was one of the worst books i've ever read. (there was much anticipation, but i don't think anyone who did read it thought it was anything wonderful...it's all in the marketing.)

This is quite possibly one of the worst lists I have ever seen. I agreed up until about 40, and then the list kinda started to contradict it's self. Mainly by adding people from the republican party's book's saying that you wouldn't like them, but then turning around and saying that you don't like Charles Darwin's book, somthing they speak out about (not only poorly, but are typically quite wrong about).

I think for me that its about what character type you may not jive with. For instance if you prefer people who party (party animals, wild childs) then you might give Snookie or Paris book a chance.
If your the intellectual, studious type, perhaps even a lil nerdy then you could prefer Darwin, or historical figures like Karl Marxx .
I guess that would be "judging a book by its cover" ooops

I don't see how you can judge someone based on the fact that they might have enjoyed reading a book by a terrible person and leader. If people are very interested in history or psychology they may really enjoy reading a book that would provide lots of information on a historical figure and psyche behind their actions. It does not mean that the person reading/learning about/enjoying the book is a bad person or has a bad personality.
However, I don't think that this book should be in a person's top 5 must reads or part of their introduction hehe.
I find this list very interesting and kind of funny. Mostly funny because I have read (or want to read) a lot of books from this list.

I have read 16 books in the top 100 so far and liked about half of them e.g. Hitchhiker's Guide, the books by Austin, Darwin, Karl Marx, Golding, and Twilight is not that bad either imo:) I think there are two kinds of "like". People can like a book b/c they agree with the author, or just like it for fun and for understanding the other side. If it is the first case then maybe it says sth about what a person believes.

Why on earth is Lolita on here? I can understand many of the others, even though I have to confess I've liked some of them. But Lolita is undeniably one of the best pieces of literature ever written in the English language, period, and I can't believe it's on a list with Sparks and Snookie.

Clearly, Brittany wasn't talking about Mein Kampf alone. However, there is great value in Mein Kampf. Especially to, say, psychologists? It's an autobiography and an explanation of Hitler's thoughts. Loving the book does not mean you love what it stands for. It's a doorway to the mind of one of the most monstrous men. Well worth a read.
