You’ve always been the one who was brave—no, the one who was sure. You’ve always been so sure of the story you want me to tell, the story you’ve been asking me for since we were seventeen: The story about the things that happened while I was asleep. “It’s your story,” you would say. “If you don’t let it out, it will take over your life.” But the story is mine only as the victim owns the prosecution, or the whale the harpoon. Telling it has always been the privilege of the perpetrators, who have the actual facts, and of the bystanders—like you—who believe they know.
Drew - to RidgewayGirl •So basically I heard about this book earlier this year and purchased it immediately..it starts from a rumor in high school and plays with form and the thriller genre. It should have been last summer's beach read but maybe this year? It is hard to put down, and despite not being my usual style, I devoured it.
I feel like [[book:Interior Chinatown|44436221] won't have the Offill Effect if only because it's a far weirder structural challenge. Or, at most, we'll see it cropping up inside of more traditional novels -- like how text messaging has started to show up as text formatting instead of, I don't know, in Arial font or something.
(side note: Kate Reed Petty's TRUE STORY -- a book I deeply wish had made the list this year, one that deserved more attention than it got -- has some screenplay interstitials that I thought worked really well, particularly in a novel that was purposefully trying on about a half dozen modes throughout)

That's right, it did. But in a way that worked. I loved that book so much that I immediately bought a copy and mailed it off to a friend....
