The Perfect Nurse #1

The Perfect Nurse

Rate this book
‘My name is Darcy, I’m your nurse and I’m here to help you.’ I repeat the words I’ve said so many times. Except this time, I don’t mean it…

If you saw me walking down the street, you’d think I was pretty ordinary – I wear the typical crisp, white nursing uniform, my hands are scrubbed clean and you’d have no reason to believe I was anything other than a good citizen. A good nurse.

But looks can be deceiving. You shouldn’t trust me – because I don’t even know if I can trust myself.

Now I stare at the reflection in the mirror – dark smudges under my eyes and blood on my hands – listening for the sound of police sirens.

Because the truth is I had to do something terrible. I broke all the rules a nurse should follow. I wanted someone gone so badly. And now they’re dead because of me.

I’m looking over my shoulder everywhere I go because I’m sure someone knows my secret. Then when my home is broken into I know one simple truth: this isn’t over yet…

It’s only the beginning.

The police are the least of my worries now. But to save myself, am I going to have to kill again?

For those of you who haven’t read anything by Hurst yet, let me just say that it’s smart to go in blind. You will be entertained, and the story will progress fast. In the perfect nurse we know from the beginning that something bad has happened, but it won’t become clear until the end of the book.

If you like twists, this one has a totally unpredictable one: I’m not sure if I bought it, but if you keep your rational mind silent, it didn’t matter much. The writing was a bit simplistic, with only the necessary details being shared, but it made the story flow effortlessly.

To conclude you’re getting a pretty entertaining book with a twist to remember.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

Daniel Hurst has done it again! Although the synopsis might throw you off a bit, the book more than makes up for it.

The story follows two nurses, Darcy and Pippa, who get a new assignment to care for a wealthy man's wife. She’s had a nasty fall and now suffers from memory loss. But, as you can guess, nothing is as simple as it seems. Darcy soon becomes suspicious, and the intrigue begins!

The book starts a bit slow, but don't let that discourage you—it quickly picks up speed. The twist in the middle was so unexpected, it made my head snap up like I might get whiplash!

This is a great introduction to a new series, and I can’t wait for the next book. Big thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the chance to read and review this ARC.

"The Perfect Nurse" was anything but perfect!

I am a devoted Daniel Hurst fan and have listened to all his books.

IMHO, Daniel Hurst did not write "The Perfect Nurse".

WHY?

1) Waaay too slow. Repetitious text and no action until Chapter 25.

(Huh???)

Daniel Hurst's earlier releases have nonstop action, beginning at Chapter One.

2) Twists were absurdly eye-rolling.

If Daniel Hurst did indeed pen this "thriller", he must have done so as a 2nd-grade student.

I listened to the audiobook read by Lauryn Allman.

To add to my disappointment, Lauryn Allman's narration was robotic and lifeless.

Where was a "perfect nurse" when needed?

I could have used a shot of adrenaline or some extra-potent meds to help me stay awake!

Yes, this book lacked the "perfection" I was seeking.

UGH!!!!!

One star, rounded up!

Another winner of a book with Daniel Hurst’s latest The Perfect Nurse. This starts off with Darcy and Pippa who are nurses who have a new patient to take care of. Scarlett needs full time care due to an accident so they are there to help. What follows that kept me glued to each word, each page … I could not put it down! This is an absolute must read and it looks like it will be a series too - I love Daniel’s series. One is better than the next.. My mind was blown at the end. Loved it. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this advance copy in exchange for my honest review. To be published July 2024.

This book is full of so many twists and turns that I can barely say anything outside of the (kind of misleading) synopsis without spoiling the story! Darcy and Pippin are two nurses who were assigned to some very wealthy people, Adrian and his wife, Scarlett. Scarlett had an accident that left her with brain damage, and her husband has realized he can’t take care of her on his own any more.

Their first day at the house, Darcy feels something is off about this couple. She can’t put her finger on it, but these people make her uncomfortable, and so does the house. When Adrian asks her to stay over nights for extra pay, her alarm bells really start to go off, and that’s when we get to the heart of the story with all the twists.

Reality definitely needs to be suspended with this book; I didn’t see any of the twists coming, because they were so out there that they weren’t even in the realm of possibility for me. Also, this is set in Chicago with American characters, but I could tell the author is British by some of the words and phrases used. Maybe the UK and US versions are the same, but it was odd with characters from Chicago saying certain things. Overall though, this was a fast-paced read that was entertaining and pretty original. It looks like there will be more to Darcy’s story coming in the future, and I will be there for the second book! 3.5 stars.

(Thank you to Bookouture, Daniel Hurst and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on July 1, 2024.)

So many twists and turns that I never saw coming. Each section was so well done, and kept me glued to find out what the HECK was happening. Hurst does this so well. Lies, secrets, murder, family and friends are all hiding something which makes this a very FUN read!

First in a new series by the author

We meet Darcy as she is burning her uniform and no longer wanting to be a nurse and the story then takes us through why she has come to this place in her life…..and what a story it is

The people Darcy has been charged to care for are not as they seem and she is determined to prove this even when her nursing bestie is trying to dissuade her…what she discovers not only shocks her but takes her life in a complicated direction…I shall say no more

Its typical Daniel Hurst with twists that start and then multiply and a story that keeps you turning that ‘just one more page’

This author for me cannot write a bad book, occasionally you have to maybe suspend belief a bit but that’s cool, its fiction

Fans will as we do love it

This is Daniel Hurst back in fighting mode! After a small dip in form with his last book The family trip, Daniel Hurst comes back with a vengeance.
The Perfect Nurse is fast paced (as always) with many cliff hanger chapters or chapter endings that left me saying "what?!" You just have to know what happened next and they just keep on coming. The other fun thing about this book is that it really got me. As an avid thriller reader I'd consider myself not too shabby at coming up with theories (some of which are right to my dismay as I love a good unexpectedly twist) but I did NOT see these ones coming. I had theories but it was no where near!
Plot:
Darcy is a home nurse. When she starts on a new patient Scarlett who suffers from brain damage after an accident, Darcy starts to suspect all is not what it seems. As she crosses the line and starts her own investigation into her new patient, this rollercoaster of a book will take you places you never saw coming.
A quick and addictive page turner. I'm do glad I have the sequel 'The nurse's lie' ready to read!

Many thanks to Bookouture who granted me a copy of the book through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I've never been disappointed by Danuel hurst. I was however thrown by the burb a clever misdirection and changed my expectations of what i would be reading and made it irrelevant.
The story didn't really take off for me until the .middle with the omg curveball twist which blew my mind and explained why this was a part 1 if a series. Darrcy grew on me as the story went on. Pippa seemed a more complex character who I would love to see more of in the future. Some of the final reveal felt a little convenient that all if a sudden it came together. However this was realistic. I'm left anticipating rhe next one. Feeling sad it's over but want to see where this goes as the ending gives so many options. I wanted so much more. As always 5 star highly recommended but I would suggest the burb is revisited as its not what is says on the tin and alrhough misdirection works you have to read the whole book to get it.which is clever ut many disappoint readers expecting a mote killer based read.
Thank you netgallery and publisher and author for this cracking 5 star read.

2.5/5

This book was slow to start and did pick up at the last 70%.
I feel like there’s still a lot of pieces missing.
The twist was good! The ending was good.
Don’t know if I’ll continue to read the series.

3.25⭐️ this was fine! I am planning on reading the second book that just came out to see how more of the story unfolds. I’m trying to read more of this authors books since they’re quick thriller reads on kindle unlimited. This was suspenseful and twisty it was a bit underwhelming at times though and dragged at about the halfway point. I believed the book would be about one thing and ended up being about something completely different. It had its twists and turns and overall it was an easy read. I would recommend if you are looking for a quick and easy thriller that is fine - nothing astonishing but not bad by any means.

This is another enjoyable, entertaining read from Daniel Hurst. Although the plot was slightly slow initially, I was always interested in how the story was going to play out. The protagonist intrigued me and kept me invested as secrets were revealed. The first twist totally caught me off guard. It was completely unexpected and masterfully ignited future twists that led to the shocking conclusion. I am looking forward to reading the next installment in this series. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.

The prologue to this story finds a nurse burning her blood stained uniform and ID card. Skip ahead to the present time and find that Darcy is an anxious person who suffers from sleep deprivation. Her fellow nurse, Pippa, takes her under her wing, offering support, encouragement, and strong coffee as they have been hired to assist a married couple, Adrian and Scarlett. Scarlett has brain damage from a fall suffered in her kitchen which has resulted in some type of memory loss/dementia. Darcy is very uncomfortable in the situation and suspects Adrian may be harming his wife. When a strange man follows her and then someone seems to have broken into her house, her life begins spinning out of control.

Hurst has written a number of psychological thrillers, including the popular The Doctor’s Wife series. I like to call them “popcorn thrillers.” This is a clever plot, a bit over the top, and, for me, required suspension of belief. There are twists, turns, deceits, murder. It was a quick, easy, dare I say, fun read.

I immediately seek out Daniel’s books as soon as he releases them. I’m so happy NetGalley provided this ARC. I loved this book, and it appears this one will be part of a series! At first, I had no clue what was happening but I just enjoyed the reading journey. Once the initial shocking twist was revealed, I couldn’t imagine what the rest of the book would entail. But it just kept getting better! This is one of those books where you just enjoy reading without wanting it to end. I can’t wait for the next in the series! Thanks to NetGalley for providing this book!

4🌟!! Okay this had me HOOKED!!!!!! Plot twist after plot twist after plot twist. I literally read this in one sitting I could not put it down. It was so fast paced and addictive. Honestly I couldn’t predict any of the twists and that had me on the edge of my seat. The writing was very easy to understand and flowed super well. The first 30ish% was a tad bit slower however after that the pacing was go go go and I loved that. I will say i’m not a huge fan of the ending it felt very rushed and abrupt within the last 10-15% and I feel like there were a few unanswered questions. Apart from that I really thoroughly enjoyed this and I highly recommend. Thank you to Daniel Hurst, Bookouture, and Netgalley for this ARC. The Perfect Nurse will be published on July 1st!!

Darcy and Pippa are nurses for the private sector, and they always puts their patients first. They take on a new client Adrian, a retired doctor whose wife Scarlett, a retired nurse needs looking after. She had an accident that caused her to have brain damage. So, she can’t remember her long term memory only the present. So, she needs daily care for her needs.
When they first meet the couple, Darcy senses that something is not right. So, she is on a mission to find out what it is.
In the meantime, she has problems of her own. She thinks someone is stalking her and she wakes up to find someone in her house.
Yet again, Daniel Hurst doesn’t disappoint with the Perfect Nurse the first book in an exciting new series from the author. At first, I must admit it was a slow burn for the first half of the book. But even so I couldn’t put it down. I thought I knew what direction this was heading, and I was surprised again with the author’s famous twist that it turned out to go in a completely different direction which was more intriguing then the first half. All in all, I enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see how this series develops. 4 stars from me.

I tried to read and enjoy this book I really did but I just could not get over the terrible writing! I have read books by Daniel Hurst before and enjoyed them, but it was almost like this was written by someone else! He would repeat himself a lot - he kept saying something doesn’t feel right then go on to talk about something else then next paragraph this doesn’t feel right - then again and again. It’s like ok you have already said that 3 times on the same page! The writing was very methodical for example “ I went into the kitchen I then sat down and picked up my cup of tea I then had a sip of the tea, there’s also things that the main character does that a nurse would
Not do - she would not hug the patients husband that she literally just met and promise to be a shoulder for him to cry on like what the? She would be up looking after the patient. Just weird stuff like that, the book needs to go back to the editing stage.
Thanks to netgalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy all opinions are mine. Sorry Mr Hurst I like your other books though!

Wow! I loved this book. The first 30% was good but then it became impossible to put down and had me reading through the night. So many times I thought I knew where the story was heading but there were so many twists that left me shocked. After having read so many psychological thrillers I’m finding it harder to find new and unique twists but Daniel Hurst managed to accomplish that in this amazing book. The only negative I have was that I wanted an epilogue at the end as I felt it ended too soon but after learning this is the first book in The Perfect Nurse series I think it was fitting to leave the story at that point. I’m looking forward to not only reading the next book in the series but also reading more books by Daniel Hurst.

I loved this one! It’s a captivating thriller that kept me scratching my head over and over.

Darcy and Pippa are home care nurses charged with the care of Scarlett who has a traumatic brain injury following a fall. Darcy can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to the story and begins to doubt that Scarlett is truly ill. At the same time, Darcy has herself a stalker and even had her home broken into. Her life is in shambles as she struggles with insomnia and panic attacks, but feels strongly that she must protect her patient from whatever is going on.

This is book one of two and I await with bated breath the next installment of this fantastic story. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy of this 5-star book.

The Perfect Nurse, by Daniel Hurst is a suspense-building book about a woman working as an in-home nurse for an affluent family. The wife, a former nurse herself, is experiencing amnesia and difficulty with mobility after a traumatic brain injury- or is she? From the start, main character “Darcy”, has a bad feeling about this family but can’t quite place why. As the days go on, she becomes more and more unsettled by this couple and the lengths they’ll go to, to get what they want.

I really struggled to get into this book initially. I found the first few pages to be repetitive and almost juvenile. I also found it hard to read in an American accent, as they’re in Chicago, but the writing feels British. The terminology and sentence structure is consistent with a setting in Europe, but there was no suggestion that the characters were originally from anywhere but Chicago.

Once I got into the story, I did find the suspense building and the desire to get to the end increasing. I would consider this more of a popcorn thriller in that you could see the twists lining up as the chapters progressed.

Overall, I did enjoy the story and was eager to find out how it ended. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

Wow. I’m impressed. I didn’t see this coming at all. AT ALL. Wow. The amount of detail… and story building… it was brilliant! What a unique plot, with some particular twists and turns making this not another nurse story! I LOVED it and can’t wait for the next installment! I hope it follows the other character…haha.
This is a somewhat new author to me and so far, I’m impressed with what I’m reading! The character depth is something I see often lacking but not here! Major kudos to Daniel Hurst!!

I really enjoyed this one as it's fast-paced and clever with several twists I didn't see coming! Darcy and Pippa are nurses who take care of Pippa--wife of Adrian--as she slipped and fell in her kitchen and has brain damage so can't remember most things. But Darcy senses things are "off" and vows to discover what's really going on. But soon a strange man begins following her and she believes her house has been broken into at night, but the cops find nothing out of the ordinary and Darcy becomes even more paranoid as she can't make sense of any of this. I haven't read Hurst before but really enjoyed this one as it's so unusual...but I may not be excited to go to a hospital any time soon!

Daniel always seems to wow my reading experience and blow my twisty mind and this latest psychological thriller and the first in a new series is another to add to that list.
The Perfect Nurse is an addictive, crazy and gasp worthy read.
Darcy Miller is a nurse.
Herself and colleague, Pippa are assigned a caring job for a wealthy couple.
The wife had an unfortunate accident and now suffers from loss of memory.
But nothing is quite clear cut….
Darcy is suspicious and begins investigating.
She soon discovers there’s a lot more going on than it seems…
Daniel is known for that unexpected twist and mind blowing ending and in this tale he does just that and then some.
It will leave you yearning for more.
A great plot, many suspicious characters and a very agreeable finale.
Unique, explosive quick page flipping book and an absolute must read author.
And remember The Nurse will be back in the next book.

I found this to have a very slow start. Darcy was paranoid, impulsive, reckless and I had a hard time relating to her. She didn't really think much through. Her story kind of changes and I was tempted to feel a little more sympathetic but she was a little difficult to like.
The second half improved and had several twists that I really didn't see coming. It was much more thrilling and I started to enjoy the book a little more here.
I would have rated this three stars (slow first half, more exciting second half) except that after finishing the book there are some things that just don't make sense to me.
spoilers ahead

I really struggled to rate this one, for so many reasons, the bad nearly had me DNF'ing this book several times, the good all goes into major spoilers.

I read the first 30% within an hour in one sitting so that goes to show how easy to read it is, but I genuinely struggled to pick it back up again after that. Darcy was somehow the most clueless, tactless, confusing nurse while every character who interacts with her gives her grace. She jumps to conclusions so far I can only assume she's won Olympic medals for it. And the repetition of 'my patient' in every line was becoming painful.

Then we get to the main twist. Somehow it felt like it came too late and too early at the same time, but it definately saved the book for me. Events moved fast after that and further, very predictable, twists came after. It didn't make up for the plot holes, illogical characters, and repetition upon repetition, but it did bump the rating up by a couple stars for sure.

I think if you can suspend disbelief and logic then it's a pretty good thriller and very fast to get through, and I know a lot of people will love this more than I do.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read the ARC of The Perfect Nurse.

Daniel Hurst has done it again. I could not put down this book and when I did, I thought about it until I was able to pick it back up again. This is a real page-turner with twists and turns you would never expect.

The book starts off with Darcy and Pippa, two nurses who are heading to take care of a new patient by the name of Scarlett. The book is told from the point of view of Darcy as she and Pippa start this new job/adventure together.

It looks like this book is part of a series and I can't wait for the next book to be released. I will clear my calendar for this one.

WOW! This book was executed so well! I love Daniel Hurst, and I must say this might be my favorite book by him yet! There were twists and turns that had my jaw on the floor and made me gasp out loud. I could not put this book down. When a major twist dropped midway through, I flipped the pages even faster. I just HAD to know what was going to happen. This book is a must read. The last 25% of the book completely blew my mind.

Darcy and Pippa are nurses who visit patient's in their homes. They take on a new patient, Scarlett, who had an accident in the home and has lost her memory. Darby is convinced there is more going on than meets the eye. From her first moment of Darby's speculation, we are taken on a WILD ride in typical Daniel Hurst fashion. He delivers drama, suspense, thrill, lies & deceit, and twists in his own epic way. I thought this book was headed in one direction, and when a big twist occurred midway through, we were taken in a direction that had me engrossed in what was happening. Such a great read! I'm so eager to start book 2 in this series.

I always get super excited when I see a new book by Hurst pop up on NG. I know I can count on him to deliver a fast and twisty read and this one did not disappoint. What a crazy ride!! I did NOT expect things to go the way that they did. I love the element of surprise and Hurst brilliantly laid me out with one big sucker punch to the face. Well played my friend! I loved every minute of this book and look forward to reading what he comes out with next. I HIGHLY recommend it!
