42 New Reader-Approved Mysteries for Spring

Posted by Sharon on March 18, 2024

It’s like Agatha Christie used to say: Spring is the time for warm breezes, blooming flowers, and (fictional) murder most foul!

We kid—Agatha didn’t say that, as far as we know. But surely she would agree with the general sentiment. We’ve gathered below 42 new mystery and thriller novels hitting shelves between today and the end of May.

The books here have been selected according to overall anticipation level among your fellow Goodreads regulars. These are the books making their way en masse onto readers’ Want to Read shelves. We’ve sorted for adult mysteries and added a few promising YA mystery titles at the end.

Some highlights for your springtime reading list, in no particular order: Alyssa Cole (When No One Is Watching) returns with the intriguing One of Us Knows, featuring a spooky island mansion, a devastating Nor’easter, and a protagonist with dissociative identity disorder. Multiple personalities, in other words. It puts the book title in a whole new light.

Speaking of tasty book titles, Stuart Turton’s sci-fi hybrid mystery The Last Murder at the End of the World invites readers to a near-future dystopia in which exactly 122 villagers have survived a worldwide extinction-level event. One of them is a killer. It’s not like we can afford this kind of nonsense, species-wise…

The season’s most anticipated debut may well be the buzzy How to Solve Your Own Murder, from American-born U.K. author Kristen Perrin. Early readers are raving about the innovative premise concerning a fortune teller’s prophecy and an oddly prescient murder victim.

Oh, and save the date for Butter, the Japanese bestseller finally getting its English translation in April. The book’s subtitle: A Novel of Food and Murder. So, you know, if you’re into either of those things.

Also in the hopper: new books from John Grisham, Ruth Ware, Alex Finlay, and Jesse Q. Sutanto (the Aunties are back!). Click through the book cover images for more information about each title, and add anything enticing to your Want to Read shelf.

message 9: by Alecia (new)

Alecia Before reading reviews most people read the description of the book. Why does everyone feel the need to write another description? Very annoying in my opinion. Just leave your review and leave it at that.

message 10: by anastasia (new)

anastasia ♥ hiraeth how is it that it's always books with very low ratings appearing on those lists?

We have been reading books by men for many decades. About time the literary world became a bit more balanced.

I think the mystery genre has kind of adapted. They still have cozy mysteries, but most of your traditionally published, marketed books are going to be mystery/thrillers.
