A former professional dancer and teacher, Suanne Laqueur went from choreographing music to choreographing words, writing stories that appeal to the passions of all readers, crossing gender, age and genre. As a devoted mental health advocate, her novels focus on both romantic and familial relationships, as well as psychology, PTSD and generational trauma.

Laqueur’s novel An Exaltation of Larks was the grand prize winner in the 2017 Writer’s Digest Book Awards and took first place in the 2019 North Street Book Prize. Thank you so much! I'm thrilled you enjoyed it.

My next book will be a novella called Here To Stay. It’s Daisy and Erik in the first five years of their life together. In the midst of their joy in reconciling, they will have challenges to face such as the stress of Erik moving to Canada and trying to find work. Erik also has to mend a lot of hurt with Will and there’s twelve years of emotion he and Daisy have to catch up on and allow themselves to feel. Not everything goes with fairytale smoothness, but little by little he and Daisy build on the foundations already laid and create a new life together. They’re a very loving, connected couple and extremely bonded with Will and Lucky. “The four of us need each other,” Will says. “Don’t tell me in the fifty-thousand year history of the human race, this has never happened before. We’re not weird. In the statistical scheme of things, we’re probably typical.”

At the same time, Erik begins to make contact with some cousins on his father’s side. He slowly begins to build relationships and learn a little family history. His father gains dimension when relatives tell Erik stories. Being a “Fish” takes on new significance. And these new relationships will be of tremendous importance to him when he faces one of the greatest challenges of his life as a son, a husband and a father.(less)

You had me at "revisiting" :-)

You know, I really don't have a good answer for this. In the first few months afterward, I'm guessing she was afraid? She was ashamed? She was broken? All of the above? And then as time piled up on top of time, the fear of his reaction only compounded and it was safer not to see him and just remember what they had?

I'll tell you this, in The Ones That Got Away, the question is posed to Will: If you could go back and change anything you did on The Day Of Which We Will Not Speak, would you?

And Will answers, "I wouldn’t have left Fish alone at Colby Street. Dumbest thing ever. Telling Dais not to go over there, leaving him to stew in rage and pack up and leave. Idiotic. If I could go back, I would’ve slashed his tires or hid his car keys. Then I would’ve parked outside his bedroom and not moved. Or lay down in the driveway. Or better, I would’ve thrown Dais into his room, barricaded the door and not let them out until…something happened. Or someone died. I don’t know. But giving him space was the wrong tactic, I know that now."

And even in Here to Stay, Daisy asks Erik, “What would you have done if I came to your room that night?”

“I can only answer that in hindsight," he says. "It’s easy to say now I would’ve let you in and talked to you. Would I though? I honestly don’t know. I might have locked you out and ignored you. I might have let you in and sat there like a stone. I might have thrown you up against the wall and fucked you and then made you go. I might have just cried. I don’t know.”

I just don't know either.... Love brings out the best and the worst in us.(less)

Suanne Laqueur is on page 20 of The World: Holy hell, this book is dense and ambitious. I’m enjoying it so far, although I don’t entirely like the huge ensemble cast of narrators. I absolutely see the appeal of such a cast, because it’s a world history to represent, literally, all voices. But it makes it a bit chaotic. I’m focusing on the narration, voice, accents, rather than the stories. Still it’s quite a journey....

“Some seek the limelight and some hold the light in place”
Suanne Laqueur, The Man I Love

“She smiled back at him. Neither of them had said so much as hello yet she was looking at him with those eyes. Deep in the cathedral of his young being, Erik felt a bell toll, a peal of recognition. And for the rest of his life, he would swear, he would swear to anyone who asked, although nothing was said aloud, he heard Daisy Bianco speak to him. She said it with her eyes, he heard it clearly in his head, and it wasn’t hello.
It was, 'Well, here you are...'
Here I am, he thought.”
Suanne Laqueur, The Man I Love

“Many people like being alone, but nobody likes to be lonely.”
Suanne Laqueur, An Exaltation of Larks

Suanne Laqueur, The Man I Love

“You haven’t seen your father since you were eight?'
He shook his head.
'No word. No contact. No nothing?'
'Nothing.'
Daisy’s eyes looked right and left before coming back to his. 'Is he alive?'
Erik turned looked into the blue-green eyes studying him so intently. He was surprised he had revealed this to someone he barely knew. Normally this was the card he kept closest to his chest. Yet something about Daisy looking at him, her expression calm and interested, sympathetic but not pitying, tactfully curious, seemed to be reaching into the tangle of emotions comprising the experience of being so cruelly deserted, and gently drawing out a thread.”
Suanne Laqueur, The Man I Love

“A hush fell over them. For a long moment, while she was leaning her chin on her hand atop the piano lid, and his hands rested lightly on the keys, they stared at each other. The stage, the wings, the maw of the theater and its rows of seats and ornamental moldings, all receded. The air about them shimmered, drew in, coalesced into a bubble. They looked at each other, breathing together, long past a socially acceptable interval. It was far beyond the border where Erik normally would have dropped his gaze, cracked a joke or at least a smile.
She’s peaceful, he thought, and her eyes widened slightly, as if she had heard him.”
Suanne Laqueur, The Man I Love

“Look, no gay man is oblivious to a beautiful woman. I’m gay, I’ve partnered women and believe me, you feel it going on. Beauty is beauty. And straight or gay, you are immersed in this intense, artistic chemistry which is both sensual and sensory. Chemistry is chemistry. It just isn’t rooted in sexual attraction.”
Suanne Laqueur, The Man I Love

“Daisy seems the type who likes to make something beautiful with her partner, rather than just be carried around and adored in the spotlight. So I imagine she’s generous and forgiving in the dark.”
