Emilie-Noelle Provost lives in a northeastern Massachusetts mill town—the same one Jack Kerouac was from—with her husband, daughter, and three crazy rescue cats. She is an avid hiker and a member of the AMC's 4000-Footer Club who can often be found on a trail in New Hampshire's White Mountains. She's also a big fan of European crime dramas, and is always on the lookout for new series to watch.

Some of her favorite books (in no particular order) include "Peace Like a River" by Leif Enger; "Townie" by Andre Dubus III; "The Girl Who was Saturday Night" by Heather O'Neill; "Enon" by Paul Harding; Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the d'Urbervilles;" and Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities."

Usually, rereading what I have written the day before jogs my memory so that I can pick up a train of thought I had previously. If not, it usually helps me develop some new ideas and motivates me to get going.(less)

Whether I'm working on a book or a magazine article, I have to sit down and write whether I feel like doing it or not in order to meet deadlines. The best part is that I get to be creative and make my own schedule. Having the freedom to work when and where I want is important to me.(less)

One Hot Summer

The excessive heat this season reminds of the summer after my junior year of college, when I was 21 years old. I’m not sure whether it was as hot back then, in 1992, as it is now, but it certainly felt like it. The house in which I grew up was built in the second half of the 19th century. There was no air conditioning. My younger sister and I didn’t even have window AC units in our bedrooms. (Our

"I hope the greatest review I can give a novel, which I certainly feel of The River Is Everywhere, is that I didn't want it to end. This novel was so very rich with culture, with vivid characters, with complex relationships. And, yet... somehow it is " Read more of this review »

“Two clean-shaven, pink-skinned cops got out of the car. I got up from my chair and stood with my hands on my hips, waiting for them to get close enough for me to holler a greeting in French—the less American I seemed, the better.”
Emilie-Noelle Provost

“I’d just placed my napkin on my lap when I noticed it: a hint of silver peeking out from beneath Ann’s dinner napkin . . . I was in the middle of taking a sip of water when I realized I was looking at a gun.”
Emilie-Noelle Provost, The River is Everywhere

“Barges from around the world floated up and down the river on their way to and from Montréal and the Great Lakes. I imagined the sailors aboard these ships—far from home, tired, excited, adventurous, lonely—and felt a little better knowing I wasn’t the only stranger in this place.”

“My roommate, Remi, was a kid from Haiti who was at Saint Ignatius on a scholarship. The day I moved into the dorm he was losing his mind because the leaves on some of the maple trees on campus were starting to turn red. He’d never seen anything like it.”
