I have stopped caring what the "literary establishment" thinks of my writing. Instead, I keep my focus on my readers. I also listen to my heart. As long as I am speaking from an authentic place, and my readers are responding with their unvarnished opinions (whether critical or supportive), I feel at peace in the world. The same answer applies to everything else. I strive to be better, but I think I do it for the right reasons these days. :-)(less)

Hi Cynthia!
I love your question. Why does it seem people don't enjoy the library anymore? I love the library. It is my happy space. My first book WENCH was inspired by discovering a little-known historical footnote in a biography I was reading. My second book BALM was triggered by my ongoing interest in the Civil War period. I have been known to wander the aisles of university libraries just scanning book spines. I enjoy the process of discovery as much as I enjoy the writing itself. Thanks for your excellent question!(less)

Historical Fiction Week

Did you know that this is Historical Fiction Week on Goodreads? I'm taking questions via "Ask the Author" along with some AMAZING authors such as James McBride, Isabel Allende, Lisa See, Lalita Tademy, Tracy Chevalier, and others. I've even been asking questions of my favorite authors. Lol. Come join the fun and ask us something!

“My children ain’t the only thing I love. If I was allowed, I reckon I’d love myself, too.”
Dolen Perkins-Valdez, Wench

“There is no greater right for a woman than having a choice, Anne. And I exercised that right. Fully and consciously.”
Dolen Perkins-Valdez, Take My Hand

“Our bodies belonged to us. Poor, disabled, it didn’t matter. These were our bodies, and we had the right to “decide what to do with them. It was as if they were just taking our bodies from us, as if we didn’t even belong to ourselves.”
Dolen Perkins-Valdez, Take My Hand
