I grew up in Texas in the seventies, and although I really wanted to go into writing and film from an early age, my parents (Cuban-American) were NOT on board.

They believed there were only three acceptable career paths for a male child: doctor, lawyer, and architect.

After a disastrous first year of college pre-Med (too much fun, not enough study), I ended up getting a BA in philosophy (not acceptable), then I went to law school (salvaging the family name).

I will say this. I grew up Catholic. Over the years, I've studied (and by that I mean academically—in university) Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism, as well as the Reformation (both from a religious perspective as well as historical and sociological). So, as far as my writing goes, it does have a lot of different religious influences. And those spill over into the different concepts of justice that are presented in my books.(less)

"Hay que leer la trilogía. Esta bien entretenida, que a veces, ha llegado a ponerme en tensión. Muchísimos personajes, pero no se pierde el hilo de los 3 libros, y no desconectas."

“You see, there are no pretty pink flowers in the woods at night.”
J.K. Franko, Eye for Eye

“Our world is not safe. It is a toxic swamp populated by predators and parasites. The odds are stacked against us from the moment of conception. We survive only because we fight the elements, hunger, disease, each other. And, although civilization promises us safe harbor, that promise is a fairy tale. Only the storm is real. It comes for each of us. And we cannot win. We can only choose how we will suffer our defeat.

We can meekly take our beatings, and die like lemmings, finding solace in the belief that we shall one day inherit the earth.

Or, we can plunge into the chaos with eyes wide open, taking comfort instead from the bruises, scars, and broken bones which prove that we fought to live and die as gods.”
J.K. Franko, Life for Life

“The children seek to resolve the issue amongst themselves, and mete out punishment to restore balance and keep the game going.”
J.K. Franko, Eye for Eye

“She looked to Roy as though she lived in Oz, in the land of color, like she carried it with her everywhere she went. When they began dating, he found that her energy was the perfect counterpoint to the world into which he sank at regular intervals, that black and white Kansas that he inhabited.”

“Outlier complacency' is a heuristic that allows a person to enjoy the thrill of danger associated with the possible negative outcome of an activity or event because they take comfort in the reality that the likelihood of an actual negative outcome is statistically low.”
