Ted Kravitz explained that he witnessed Adrian Newey taking sketches of components on the Red Bull RB20 and some of the team’s rivals’ cars at the British Grand Prix on Sunday in preparation for his next job in the paddock.

The legendary aerodynamicist announced his departure from Red Bull ahead of the Miami Grand Prix and initially suggested that he was planning on taking some time off. However, he reeled back those claims soon after, and it is now expected that he will be back in the paddock as early as next year.

During Kravitz’s notebook segment on Sky Sports F1, the reporter explained: “I’ve got to tell you about Adrian Newey, who amazingly is still coming to races, is amazingly still going around the Red Bull garage looking at the car that he is not in charge of anymore with his notebook and making notes about the Red Bull to take them to wherever he’s going.

“And he’s on the grid sketching designs of what everybody else and all the upgrades that other teams are bringing and thinking about I’m going to take these’. So clearly whoever said that Adrian Newey, they think he’s going to retire… wrong!

“And he’s obviously going somewhere else because why would you be coming here and making notes about other people’s cars? And wherever he goes, whether it’s Aston Martin, or Ferrari, or less likely I think now Williams or Mercedes or McLaren, he’s clearly still [working].

“And turning up in Red Bull gear preparing for his future job! I mean I know he’s not allowed in Red Bull meetings anymore, but I did still think it was quite interesting that he is still around.”

Should Newey decide to remain in the sport, it is expected that Aston Martin will be his destination. Initially, Ferrari appeared to be the clear frontrunner in the battle for his signature and some reports suggested that contract talks were nearing a conclusion, but that trail has since gone quiet.

Explaining the situation heading into the British GP, Craig Slater explained: "Newey did indeed visit the Aston Martin factory a couple of weeks ago. This was almost a behind-closed-doors event. Aston Martin kept staff away, they did not want news of this visit leaking out.

"Newey toured the campus, met with Lawrence Stroll, the team owner, and personal terms have been discussed. My understanding is Aston Martin can meet Newey's personal demands, although they are very considerable indeed.”
